View Full Version : Moonlighting DVD's Just wait till you see them!
CindyK 05-23-2005, 11:50 PM Most of you by now have read the announcement that diane has posted over on Bruce and Cybill's board concerning the advanced copy of the DVD's that DavidandMaddie.com received last week...we wanted to check them out completely before we posted anything.....but now we can tell you that they are super! The packaging is gorgeous, the quality of the episodes is spectacular and yes ALL the original music is intact.
The sound quality is really great-- you can clearly here all the rapid fire dialogue. The picture quality is great too....you will see all kinds of little details and rich colors not visible before on ancient videotapes
The commentaries include not only Cybill, Bruce, and Glenn Caron, but many of the writers, directors and crew who have wonderful stories to tell.
We are doing a full review at DavidandMaddie.com that shall be posted soon.
Everyone please get yours ordered or make plans to be standing in line in the retail stores the 31st. I promise, you are not going to want to miss these.

You lucky thing, you. I live in New Zealand and, although I have ordered them already, I have been told it can take up to 40 days to get here. I hope I don't have to wait that long. :D

toddtopbanana 05-24-2005, 06:02 AM Looking forward to the review :happyface Ordered mine from Amazon, then figured out how to get the DVD multi region! Found a hack thru Google, but will have to wait for the DVD's to see if it's worked  Decided to take a day off work, stock up on goodies, put the dogs in kennels (only kidding!) and have a ML marathon :D
Dutchie 05-24-2005, 06:49 AM Can't wait to see it. I didn't order it yet...I don't own a creditcard  so now I'm waiting for a good time to ask my dad for the DVDs (I'll pay off course) or I ask it for my birthday or maybe when I pass my finals! :D Those are going very well, only 4 to go :D
Tazmania 05-24-2005, 07:42 AM This sounds sooooo exciting C!
Still have hope that they also come out in Holland.
I'll wait for a while and if nothing happens I'm going to order from Amazon.
But first things first, give birth to my little Moonlighter! :D
This sounds great! I see the advanced copies are getting out there and I've read at least one positive review already!! Can't wait to see for myself!!
vashti1999 05-24-2005, 11:19 AM I got an advance copy but unfortunately just the discs, no packaging, so I don't even know what type of package they used or how good it is. But everything concerning what's on the discs themselves looks good.
kismet 05-24-2005, 11:37 AM How does one get advanced copies?
Where did you find the review?
Here's one review with a lot of good details!

Chelsea 05-26-2005, 04:57 AM My review for SO should be up in the next day or so - I had honestly never seen the show before until when my copy of the set arrived in the mail today.
Wow, what a show. And FWIW, the packaging is awesome. It REALLY is.
Dutchie 05-26-2005, 07:05 AM *Salutes a new fan* ;) Welcome to the club :p

It seems to be getting good reviews all over the place. The only (minor) negative thing I've seen is that not all the advertized extras are there. But all in all, it looks very impressive!
gypsygem81 05-30-2005, 01:02 PM It's an excllent review Seth, very detailed and comprehensive. I really can't wait now. Disappointed that they haven't included the gag reel though. Thanks for the review.

Chelsea 05-31-2005, 12:30 AM Review has been edited. At LEAST three episodes do appear to be syndication cuts.
U.M. Fanatic 05-31-2005, 09:13 AM I got my copy late on Monday night, just by asking someone at Wal-Mart if they had it in yet. I agree the video looks great for an 80's sitcom. I will be disappointed if they did include syndication cuts and not the original uncut epsiodes.
One thing I noticed while looking through the episodes is that on one, "The Lady In The Iron Mask", the music they originally used throughout the episode has been replaced. I recorded a re-run of this episode off of Bravo a while back and the music they used to introduce the lady in the mask at the beginning is indeed different. I think Alf Clausen, who did the music for The Simpsons, did this one too. Maybe it was a rights issue with him to use his music. The new music they replaced his with though, just doesnt fit this episode.
Edit: I noticed that Alf Clausen did quite a bit of music for Moonlighting and so far I haven't detected any replacements in any of the other episodes. I wonder why this one though?

Thanks Gem! Both of these are good, but I don't agree at all with comingsoon.net saying the Agnes' rhymes got old! She was a gem and I adored her! Also, I think the review is wrong that it's "obvious Cybill and Bruce hated each other." I think you can see real affection in these two seasons, particularly at the end of Twas the Episode Before Christmas.

Technically the person that sold them to you can get into big time trouble for selling them to you ahead of the May 31st date. Hubby works for Target and they could be fined up to $5000 for each copy they sell ahead of time. Not yelling or flaming just stating a fact. Glad that you got them I got mine today from Amazon!! Am getting ready to watch them with dinner!!

No worries, it was around 11:55 p.m. Monday night. ;)
After watching "The Lady In The Iron Mask", I can confirm that they reworked the music for the entire episode. Even at the end where they have that great chase scene set to the William Tell Overture is gone! I cant believe they would do this, it was great just the way it was.
I thought they had resolved ALL the music rights issues for the show.
Dr. Jazz 06-01-2005, 03:58 PM I went & got my copy today at lunch, but haven't been home yet. I wonder if they left DeBarge's "You Wear it Well" in "Money Talks, Maddie Walks" when Maddie is getting dressed up to go in the casino. I always think of that scene whenever I hear that song on the radio

No, think goodness they left that in, but can you imagine how that scene would play without that music with it? I also just finished watching "Funeral For A Door Nail", what a great episode that was. Using the Star Wars and Psycho themes at the end, when David and Maddie confront the bad guy, was a great touch. :)
I just wish they would have left "Lady In The Iron Mask's" music alone. :(

The Lady in the Iron Mask is one of my favorite episodes. I'm sad to hear that they changed the music.

kismet 06-02-2005, 09:58 AM I've watched two of the discs so far. I simply cannot get used to the clarity of the episodes! After more than 15 years of watching tapes with bad tracking and poor quality, it's amazing to see such clarity. I love the fact that I can skip through some of the fluff and get down and dirty with Maddie and David.
The biggest problem I have is that watching seasons 1 and 2 makes me soooooooo hungry for season 3 (and then some :D ). I do hope that they keep 'em coming and we get a chance to see all of the episodes that we love.
I want to see Symphony and Atomic and the trilogy etc. etc. etc.
I WANT IT ALL!
I'm off to watch Witness and Orson Welles introduce Dream Sequence.
I'm loving it all.
bybrandy 06-02-2005, 12:56 PM Wow, I had no idea these were supposed to come out this tuesday. I was at the local Walmart on Saturday returning a DVD I got for my birthday (but already owned) and it was there on the shelf. I grabbed that in a hurry but I had no idea it was contraband. Person in front of me in line at the checkout had one too.
This was my father's favorite show and I watched it a lot as a kid and not so much in the bravo years because everytime I switched to Bravo they were showing the claymation episode (seriously, I've seen that episode 10 times and it is NOT a favorite).
I had forgotten how much I loved this show! Man. Good times. These episodes, all of them, just made me rediculously happy.
At last I ordered the DVDs :) but the estimated delivery day is not till 23rd June to 8th July :( . I hope they come quickly, you are all making me so excited!
CindyK 06-08-2005, 11:25 AM Oh Tamm.
You poor dear. I hope you get your DVD's soon. We want you to enjoy them too.
kismet 06-08-2005, 05:09 PM At last I ordered the DVDs :) but the estimated delivery day is not till 23rd June to 8th July :( . I hope they come quickly, you are all making me so excited!
That's tooooo long to wait!
I bought a set last Tuesday at my local Wal-Mart, plus the set I had pre-ordered from Amazon arrived last Wednesday, so I feel very fortunate that I didn't have to wait more than a day from the release date to get my set from Amazon.
I still haven't had a chance to watch every episode because I keep watching my favorites, plus listening to the commentaries over and over has taken up lots of time. I wish EVERY episode had some perks though, because I just can't get enough of the EXTRAS.
Has anyone found anything hidden? (Are they called Easter Eggs?) I was hoping for some outtakes.
gypsygem81 06-08-2005, 05:39 PM So you have two copies Kis?! I know what you mean - I keep watching all my favourites too!! The commentaries are brilliant. I wish they had done some more! I've not found anything hidden yet, but that maybe because I'm still watching all my favourite episodes again!

I suppose the dvds don't contain spanish subtitles but if i were wrong on this...
Any news about when will they be released on Spain?
Hi Myst,
I ordered mine form the US, through amazon.com and hope I can play them OK. I should be able to convert my dvd player to multiregion with a hack I found online.
Still minimum 11 days till delivery though, one episode (thanks abc1 for still airing it on a Sunday) wasn't enough for me today so I have watched all the clips on davidandmaddie.com. I still want more

Stars put new shine on "Moonlighting"
By Ed Bark
The Dallas Morning News
Its stars kept feuding, and the show's embattled creator left early amid constant production delays, cost overruns and ABC's micro-managing.
This all conspired to eclipse "Moonlighting" long before its time, or so the story goes. Cybill Shepherd now is telling-selling a different story as her snippy, snappy "dramedy" repositions itself in the DVD market with the six-disc release of its first two seasons.
"I don't feel that it self-destructed before its time by any means," she said. "There are a lot of shows that just go on for another five or 10 years, and everybody gets a helluva lot richer. I think 'Moonlighting' ended exactly when it needed to end. No matter who blames who, it went on exactly as long as it was supposed to."
From first breath (March 5, 1985) to last gasp (May 14, 1989), "Moonlighting" managed an on-and-off total of just 67 episodes. The show never came close to fulfilling a standard full-season order of at least 22 episodes. In the end, most fans no longer missed what they couldn't see with any regularity.
By that time, Bruce Willis had gone from full-fledged unknown to the big box-office star of "Die Hard," while Shepherd began to recalibrate again, returning to prominence in 1995 with the hit CBS sitcom "Cybill."
She had been "Moonlighting's" only star attraction when ABC first bought the show. Except that Shepherd viewed herself as something of a has-been after exploding in 1970s films such as "The Last Picture Show," "The Heartbreak Kid" and "Taxi Driver."
"I had been a big star, but this was a major comeback for me," she said. "I couldn't get a job for years, so 'Moonlighting' was my second stage of fame. My career went downhill. My agent told me, 'Cybill, you've been gone for so long, you might as well be dead.' "
The role of Maddie Hayes, a former model turned detective, put Shepherd back on magazine covers. Willis joined her as fast-talking David Addison, a down-and-out detective who tells Maddie in "Moonlighting's" first episode, "I have always loved you. Really. Truly. Nothing personal."
Willis, in a new, behind-the-scenes featurette, says ABC didn't want him for the part.
"Television in those days was the Aaron Spelling version of TV, with 'Dynasty' and those kinds of shows, and 'Dallas,' " Willis said while seated beside "Moonlighting" creator Glenn Gordon Caron. "I certainly was not the Aaron Spelling type."
But Caron fought for him, as did Shepherd before later fighting with him. The two stars do separate commentaries and interviews for the DVD reissue.
Still, there's no lingering animosity, Shepherd said. "All that's water under the bridge."
MulberryGal 06-15-2005, 08:52 AM Thanks for the article Gem, it's a really good one. I like the way they describe ML as snippy and snappy! :) That really reminds me of all the arguments and the overlapping dialogue!

marla 07-05-2005, 08:35 PM i think the nicest bit about the dvds is watching a group of people watch moonlighting for the very first time.
we counted 73 people in the 'moonlighting social club' who have never seen moonlighting.
we've only seen the first three (and that's including the pilot)-and after the we saw the pilot, people show up like they are going to see a movie. there's popcorn and proper seating, and the lights are turned off.
it's really been lovely so far.
tonight-'the next murder you hear'.
