Does anybody remember seeing this show? I'm certain a local TV station played this in the mid-80's along with a bunch of flop short-lived shows like Bridget Loves Bernie, Temperatures Rising, Girl with Something Extra, Bob Carol Ted and Alice, The Second Hundred Years, Here Come the Brides...

Anyway, is Ugliest Girl really one of the worst shows ever made? I heard it was absolutely attrocious...that means it makes me interested in seeing it. Does anybody remember actually watching this? I think it was originally on in 1969-70.

I vaguely recall seeing this show when it first aired.
A couple of years ago I began researching a long lost fave of mine: Mr. Terrific. I found a print of the unaired M.T. pilot on eBay, and I received The Ugliest Girl In Town pilot on the same tape.
If T.U.G.I.T. was anything like the pilot, then, yes, it was pretty terrible.

The show premiered from Sept of 1968 to January of 1969

i saw that...but hardly remember it...I believe the "girl" was played by a guy :lol:

I don't remember it, but I read about it in a book that I have that lists all the TV shows that aired from 1948 to 1989 (when the book was written).

I think Gary Marshall (creator of "The Odd Couple"-and a couple times he had a small role in it-"Happy Days", "Laverne & Shirley", "Mork & Mindy" and he sometimes had a small role in "Murphy Brown") had something to do with it.

It was about a guy who was forced to impersanate a famous model, or something like that.

By the way, I neglected to mention something of note.

The closing credits to that pilot episode feature the star of the show, in drag, and the girl he's crazy about running all over London (I guess it's London) performing a lot of silly, Beatles/Monkees type sight gags. At one point they're seen dancing with a street performer who I'm pretty sure is Marty Feldman.

I imagine this was before Feldman was anybody, at least in America.

The guy was Peter Kastner - who starred in the movie "You're a Big Boy Now"

It's a really bad show. I watched a few of them years ago. Far worse show than My Mother the Car for instance.

By the way, the Gary Marshall in the cast is NOT THAT Garry Marshall.
I have 3 episodes of this show, and it truly is one of the worst sitcoms ever!!!

Love the theme song, however....

HA! the comedy network used to show most of these shows and many more rare ones in the mid 80s, later on it merged with The Comedy Channel to become Comedy Central

back then it couldnt afford BIG name shows, so it got cheap shows that were really rare and aired them a lot

I WISH TVLAND, COMEDY CENTRAL and NICK AT NITE would do that now, instead of the same ones OVER AND OVER AND OVER...........

Well, UGIT was a network show so it stands to reason that it's better than syndicated crap. However, comparing it to other network sitcoms of it's era it really doesn't hold up too well.

I remember The Ugliest Girl In Town being on prime time and I liked it when I was a kid. I bought a copy on Ebay and I thought it was boring.

Another note on Ugliest Girl is that it's one of the very few shows of the 60s that was cancelled with unaired episodes. The only other show I can recall that also had unaireds was Tammy Grimes Show.

I enjoyed the show, because I loved the theme song. Peter Kastner's "girl" character was named 'Timmy" and I saw it as a spoof of the Twiggy craze. As a 10-year-old, I thought Twiggy looked hideous. I wondered what anyone saw in her? My idol at the time was Raquel Welch. Or Sophia Loren. WOMEN who looked like WOMEN. :rolleyes2 :rolleyes:
Poor Twiggy. She didn't like being skinny with short hair. She looked very pretty years later, with longer hair, and filled out --when she was in The Blues Brothers.

The man wanted to be close to "Julie" the girl he loved, and so he was able to go to London, and work with her. That premise worked for me. I remember one ep where someone thought that Timmy was pregnant! And Peter Kastner's character worried about the medical examination forced on "Timmy"! Julie ended up standing in for "Timmy" ( rather lying on a gyn/ob's couch. A nurse or female doctor examined her, and left many bewildered by saying as she left, "Timmy is a very beautiful woman." ) :rofl:

I missed the last aired ep, because, ironically, it was the day of the stupid child's beauty pageant, and I didn't want to miss being in it. It was SUCH a rip-off! It really was just a lottery situation, with someone picking numbers from a barrell, though I had thought it really mattered what I said and wore and how I looked. I was distraught, not only for again losing, not even making semi-finals, but missing my TV show! I wanted to SUE the louses who put on that putrid pageant! :wallbang :livid:

All of that, plus my insight into the stupid phenomenon that propelled the starveling Twiggy into a beauty ideal seemed like such a joke in itself.

Consider the show a commentary of sorts on that thinking. I'd say it would be very funny, viewed in that regard.

Peter Kastner's career went almost nowhere after The Ugliest Girl in Town. His only other regular series role was on ABC's Delta House which lasted all of 13 episodes in 1979. He passed away in 2008.
