As Marshall left the cafe, Patty, Lauren and Johnny simply exchanged looks of amazment. It seemed that getting Marshall to admit what ever was going on between him and Muffy-if there really was something going on between them-it was going to be like pulling teeth.
"I have an idea," said Lauren.
"An idea," said Johnny, "I like ideas. Ideas are good."
"So, what's this idea," asked Patty.
"Let's suppose that Marshall is going to see Muffy. Where would Muffy be right now?"
"Doesn't she help out in the princiapl's office this period,"asked Patty.
"Exactly. So if we sneak down to the principal's office, maybe we might just catch Marshall and Muffy in the act."
"In the act of what," Patty said with a slight sound of disgust in her voice.
"You know, Patty, making out, kissing, smooching."
"Lauren, I just finished eating my lunch. I didn't need the image of Marshall and Muffy locked at the lips in my mind just now."
"Well, Greene, do you want to know if or if not Marshall or Muffy are in item or not?"
"Okay, Lauren, suppose we go down to the principal's office and we find both Muffy and Marshall there. That wouldn't mean anything. Muffy has had Marshall down in the office countless times before, helping her in one of her Rosarita fundraisers in order to work off his tardies."
"Yes, Patty, but if we find them kissing then the cat will be out of the bag."
"Even if they are going out, do you honestly think that they will be kissing in the middle of the office for everyone to see."
"I see your point, Greene. I hadn't thought of that. Okay, forget idea one. I have a better one. Let's go on down to the office, if Muffy and Marshall are there together, we'll just ask them if they are dating."
"You know what, Lauren, that is simple enough that it might just work."
