Boy Gets Trapped Inside Vending Machine

ELKHART, Ind. - A 3-year-old boy upset that his mother wouldn't let him use a crane vending machine to try to win a small stuffed animal took matters in his own hands. He climbed up the chute to get the prize himself.

Danielle Manges said she took her eyes off her son, James, for a moment to pick up a juice bottle he threw. When she looked up, he was in with the plush toys.
"I bent over to clean it and within two seconds he had climbed through the hole, into the chute and pushed the door shut so we couldn't get him out," she said. "He climbed up in the toys and was in there for a good hour."

Manges said James has been sick and sleeping odd hours so they went shopping about 3 a.m. Thursday at a Wal-Mart in the city some 15 miles east of South Bend. She let the boy play on some of the rides, but wouldn't give him money for the vending machine.

At first, Manges thought it was funny.

"He was playing with all the toys and hanging from the bar like a monkey," she said.

Manges said people leaving the store went back inside to buy disposable cameras to take photos of her son. She bought one herself.

She became upset, however, when Wal-Mart employees said they did not have a key to let James out. So Manges called the fire department for help.

"I expected his hand to be caught in the machine but it was his entire body in the machine," firefighter Anthony Coleman said. "He was swinging from a bar, jumping around. He was having a ball."

About 40 people watched as the firefighters removed the back of the machine and freed him.

James still came up empty handed.

"He definitely didn't get a toy after that," Manges said.

Didn't this already happen last year? :lol: I totally remember because on Appalachin Emergency room on SNL the mom brought in the whole machine with the kid in it.

oh and i remember when this happened before! there was an article posted here. there was a pic too of the kid sitting around with the stuffed animals. lol. i wonder what they would have done if someone tried to put in money and play. MOM I WON THE KID!

For some reason, when I read the title of this thread, I pictured a grown person stuck in a vending machine amongst the Snickers bars & Mallo Cups. It's getting late folks :lol: :crazy:

oh and i remember when this happened before! there was an article posted here. there was a pic too of the kid sitting around with the stuffed animals. lol. i wonder what they would have done if someone tried to put in money and play. MOM I WON THE KID!

Weird story, but I found it even more weird that firefighters had to take him out. Who's idea was it to call the fire department?

"Uhoh, we got a kid stuck in a vending machine. Let's call someone that specializes in puting out fires to get him out!"

How much do you want to bet that the mother will be suing Wal-Mart or something for her child getting stuck in that machine?

She seems to have been mostly amused. I don't think there's a chance of a law suite in this case.

dude, that JUST happened last year to another kid in a town like an hour north of me here in Wisconsin. Geez, these kids really want their toys!

well these stories are all well and good and all, but NONE of them are going to help me figure out how I am going to get into one of those machines :cuss:

Actually, any machine that dispenses something (usually for money) IS a vending machine. Those ticket machines for parking and stuff are also condsidered vending machines. Just means a machine that you buy something from.

Geez, the next time we're at Denny's, I'm going to have to try to stuff my husband in their stuffed-toy vending machine. This is a challenge to one-up the kid - bet they've never had a 200 lb. middle-aged man caught in one!! :eek:

For sure - just as bad as if they were starving the kid to death - either way I call it child abuse! How can any parent think that's healthy!?

Sorry, I can't remember. I wanna say that was like 3 years ago. If I remember right, her parents really were trying, and they found out she had something wrong with her and that's why she was obese. But I also remember some of the other mom's, who kept saying "I'll feed my baby whatever I want to."

I use to be so angry at my parents that they wouldn't let me eat all the junk I wanted....but wow, I'm so thankful now that they didn't!
