We all know that Maude was based in surburban NY while the Jeffersons and All in the Family were based in NYC. But some odd reason, as soon as the opening credits for Maude is about to roll, there is a close up shot of the Empire State Building. On the other hand, the empire state building is barley visible in the opening credits of the two NYC based sitcoms-All in the Family and the Jeffersons-lol I think this maybe the only sitcom that featured Manhattan and was not based in NYC. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I think the opening credits emphasize the fact that Maude takes place in the suburbs of New York City. They take you from the Empire State Building to the bridges exiting off to the suburbs. That simple.

I think Maude started just before the WTC was built, so outside of Lady Liberty, people always associate the Empire State Bldg. with NYC - and as he said, that gives more of the idea of heading to the 'burbs with the bridges. I don't think she was that far out of the city though - not like Westchester or anything like that - they weren't that well off.

It's actually the Chrysler building we see at the beginning of Maude's openning credits.But we did see the Empire State Building at the beginning of the openning credits of Archie Bunker's Place.

As far as the Evan's go, Florida's commute could not have been bad at all. She took the bus to tuckahoe. I did a map direction search by typing a random street in Harlem, Manhattan( W 118th st) with the destination being tuckahoe, ny. In fair traffic, a person could get there in 27minutes and 13.5 miles dependt upon where they are going.

If Florida lived in the 200st areas, her commute to tuckahoe would have been around 8.5 miles and 18 minutes. You guys have to excuse me but I just love stuff like this.

No it didn't. It took you to a familiar starting point and then led you to where she was stationed or settled. The Bloomingdales shopping bag represents that NYC was nearby and that there was commuting. Stepping out of the NYC surburbs into NYC is all it really was. Oh, Solomon. :rolleyes: :D

It was nothing wrong the the shot of the Empire State building but it just would have fit better in the closing credits. Why not start the opening credits with the shot of the house that was used as Maude's house?

No viewer would have known what major location she was near. To start at a place that is familiar and I see nothing wrong with that. It is a little cool journey. I loved the concept and it is brilliant.

I tried doing a search but came up with no results. "Crenshaw" could have been a fictitous street? :confused: I want to hop on a bus from Harlem and take it into Tuckahoe just for fun.

Solomander, I tried but sadly that bridge in the opening is G.W. I have been on that bridge a few times myself. I pulled up pics of the Tappan Zee bridge (the one that actually takes you to the suburbs) and hoped that was it but alas it wasn't. G.W. takes you into New Jersey. Error! Major error in the opening!

I hear ya ChristineV but I would not have used that. In today's time that would not fly. Back then, they could get away with it but that is truly false. I actually drove the route yesterday via (9A) . I took 9A north just like the car was doing in the opening. I saw the bridge from afar like the car in the opening did. The only difference was that I passed by the bridge and did get on it. I did not drive through Tuckahoe though but went to Yonkers instead. You can take (9A) all the way to go to the town.

Actually, "Maude Findlay" lived exactly in Westchester County, as the village of Tuckahoe is in the town of Eastchester, New York, which is located in Westchester County.

And Westchester County is only about a 35-45 minutes drive from Manhattan, depending upon traffic. I looked it up online, and there is even a commuter train stop in Eastchester.

And as far as "well-off" goes, the "Findlays" certainly were "well-off," if they could afford to have a maid (first "Florida Evans," then "Mrs. Nell Naugatuck," then "Victoria Butterfield").

I seem to recall the "Findlay" home was owned by "Maude" before she married "Walter Findlay," as "Maude Chadbourne" (maiden name) had been married four times, first to "Barney" (from whom "Maude" was widowed), then to "Chester" (from whom "Maude" was divorced), then to "Albert Hilliard" (who died and left "Maude" a second-time widow), and finally to "Walter." If "Maude" had inherited her "Tuckahoe" home, from either of her two husbands who died or her second husband in a divorce, chances are the mortgage was paid down substantially by then or even paid off by the time "Maude" and "Walter" married in 1968. In any case, with "Walter" having owned his own retail store, "Findlay's Friendly Appliances," chances are the "Findlays" were upper-middle class, very typical of residents in Westchester County.
