jayman75 05-18-2005, 10:52 AM Wow, Pav, I beat you to it! I posted about that here (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=131715).
EVERYONE MUST SIGN THIS PETITION!!!!! Come on, everybody!
Joker85 05-18-2005, 12:16 PM That's great that they are doing that, but frankly I'd rather them bring Empty Nest to Lifetime. The Golden Palace was extremely mediocre. It doesn't have the repeat value that GG does.
MikeLutton 05-19-2005, 05:11 AM i want to see Gimmie a Break on Lifetime n Maude.glad Golden place might be on lot of them a missed also hope not early n am lol
Pavan 05-20-2005, 03:47 PM A hint: Golden Palace will be airing later this summer on Lifetime. :)
Keep signing the petition, though. So, they know we all want it on the air. I hope to release full details soon.

Edster2973 05-22-2005, 06:05 PM I'd much prefer to see The Golden Palace released on DVD, probably after the release of the last season, but I guess this is a step in the right direction. Keep us posted folks!

seventies_sitcoms 05-22-2005, 06:26 PM I'd like a GP release on DVD too. You know Lifetime will butcher them. I'll bet a DVD would sell pretty good to the GG fans/ completists.

Absolutely, plus Bea Arthur did guest-star on the show for a 2 part episode. That is practically a Golden Girls episode, albeit in the new setting of The Golden Palace along with the spin-off's additional new cast members.
That alone would make it worthy of release, but we'll see what happens. Sanford & Son just had all of its 6 seasons released, but there are no plans for the spin-off Sanford to be released, and that spin-off ran for 2 seasons. For some reason, some spin-off shows are not regarded as part of the parent show that it spun off of, so I guess it's not a sure thing that we'll get The Golden Palace.
Then again, it may be that Sanford hasn't been seen in such a long time and isn't very popular that they figure it'd be too risky to release such an unknown spin-off, whereas if The Golden Palace is seen with some regularity on Lifetime and becomes identified with the public as being a part of The Golden Girls, then perhaps they'll piggyback the spin-off as an extension of the original once Season 7 is released. They won't consider the spin-off as risky since it'll be more well-known in syndication. Who knows.
All I can say is that perhaps we should start making noise and let Buena Vista know that there is interest in the spin-off. It may be too early at this point, since we're not even guaranteed the rest of the other seasons of The Golden Girls, but it doesn't hurt to plan.
Fans of Three's Company have been doing something similar with that show's respective spin-offs, namely The Ropers and Three's a Crowd. Both spin-offs have not been guaranteed but fans have been clamoring for them since Season 1 of Three's Company saw release. Since sales for the show have been more than healthy, and since fans are making noise about wanting the spin-offs, Anchor Bay is working out a way to release the spin-offs and we expect news to hit anyday now. So it can happen if fans are smart and organized, AND if sales are healthy enough on the parent show's release. Since there are ads for Season 3 of The Golden Girls already up, I think it's safe to say it's doing well (at least I hope it is).
Anyway, this is my 2 cents. If we want The Golden Palace released along with The Golden Girls, then we need to take action. We can't simply hope Buena Vista will take it upon themselves to do it. They need to be informed that there is a fanbase interested in the show. We can do this...

Joker85 05-22-2005, 07:25 PM I just don't have any interest in seeing it on DVD, or on lifetime really. In my mind, The Golden Palace tainted The Golden Girls. First off, I don't ever believe that Blanche would sell that house. Secondly, without Dorothy it just doesn't work. I know she was on a TGP 2 parter but have you ever seen it? It's an extremely bitter episode. Dorothy is acting out of character and the rest of them seem extremely bitter towards her, probably cause they were still upset at Bea for leaving to begin with. There's even a point in the episode where Blanche yells at Dorothy for leaving and "Breaking up the family." But, for those who have never seen any eps of Golden Palace it will be good I suppose for you to see them and form your own opinion.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion about whether you want to see the show released, but I reckon, as time passes and we lose some of the actresses from the show (Estelle Getty it seems may not be with us for too long), we'll want any and all things Golden Girls related. Maybe not, but either way, some of us do want it, and that's a good enough reason I think to start planning. Not that you said it wasn't...
As for the episode where Bea guest-starred, I have seen it. In fact, I have it on VHS, albeit in poor quality.
I don't read any bitterness at all in the episode. Sure, the show would've preferred to keep Dorothy as part of the ensemble, but it's not like they hated her for not being there. And there is no way Bea would've stood in for an episode if the show was intent on taking pot shots at her.
At this stage of the game, Dorothy wasn't as wisecracking as she once was but was instead someone the girls liked to poke fun at, especially when it came to her lack of dating. This trend started long before Bea decided to quit the show. I suspect the producers simply ran out of situations where Dorothy could come up with a dry wisecrack, or perhaps they felt the best way to showcase Sophia as spunky was for her to poke fun at her daughter, since most of the jabs at Dorothy did come from her mother. Either way, this 'bitterness' was simply a continuation of what went on before, and I think Bea knew that. There was nothing personal implied. If there had been, she simply would not have done the guest spot. She didn't have to, and she wasn't contractually obligated to do so either.
Yes, Blanche did say that Dorothy had broken up their family, but she wasn't furious with her at the time. It was more of a desperate exclamation that came about since Dorothy was intent on bringing back Sophia since she felt that Sophia was being worked too hard at the hotel. Kind of like 'First you left, and now you're taking Sophia'. Of course Blanche (and Rose) is going to be upset. Sophia was as much of a mother to her as she was to Dorothy, especially since her own mother had been deceased.
I also don't read anywhere where Dorothy was out of character. If you compared her to the Dorothy from the early seasons of The Golden Girls (Seasons 1-4/5), then yes, she's not the same. Bea's portrayal of Dorothy was consistent with the Dorothy through the later seasons (5-7) however. And I thought her interactions with Chuey ('Walk away now and no one gets hurt!') and the customer at the palace were hysterical.
Can the episode/The Golden Palace be compared with our beloved Golden Girls? Absolutely not, but the spin-off is part of the show's history, like it or not. There were things about the spin-off that I didn't like. Some aspects were more silly than funny, but I want it all, the good and the bad, and I feel my collection won't be complete without the spin-offs (I include Empty Nest along with the others). Just knowing that there are other episodes out there is enough for me to want them, even if they don't measure up to the originals.
But I understand if you feel differently...

Joker85 05-22-2005, 11:18 PM I loved the line where she says to Chuey "Walk away.." but it was the only good moment in the ep I thought. I didn't like how they made Dorothy suddenly admit what a horrible place Shady Pines was. That was the great part about it, we all knew it was nice for a retirement community but Sophia made up wild stuff about it cause she hated the fact she had to be there. I dunno. I felt the last scene pretty much summed up The Golden Palace. They all leave Dorothy standing in the lobby with little goodbye and she just slowly walks out. It's like she really was no longer part of the family. It was a very sad moment for me as a fan. I understand they had a hotel to run but the writers could have written it a little better. And again, I just don't like the concept. Blanche selling the house for them to go run a Hotel? I just don't see it happening. It's like Betty White said in an interview, that the show became The Golden Girls in the lobby and it just doesn't work that way, esp since they didn't have Bea. I think one of the writers said it best, "The chemistry just wasn't there anymore." I agree, I think without Bea the dynamic completely changed for the worse and it just wasn't the same. Plus having Miles cheat on Rose, the ep where Stanley comes back and is running from the law. They just weren't good and I prefer not to think of them as part of The Golden Girls. Though I do love Empty Nest and would like nothing better to see it on lifetime and DVD. But I respect your opinion and I'm glad that you can get some enjoyment out of them. And I'm glad for the fans of TGG that have never gotten to see TGP to form their own opinions on it, be that positive or negative.
Edster2973 05-23-2005, 09:40 AM I loved the line where she says to Chuey "Walk away.." but it was the only good moment in the ep I thought.
It was a classic moment for sure. Bea isn't even on the show for 2 minutes and she's already cracking up the audience...
I didn't like how they made Dorothy suddenly admit what a horrible place Shady Pines was. That was the great part about it, we all knew it was nice for a retirement community but Sophia made up wild stuff about it cause she hated the fact she had to be there.
I see your point. It makes us realize that Dorothy had sent Sophia to a place that she knew was awful, which doesn't say much about her as a daughter, unless we're to assume that Dorothy came to this realization AFTER the home burned down and AFTER she was informed by Sophia (and other residents who visited Sophia; one that comes to mind is the one who they helped try to escape but she had Alzheimer's) by how horrible it was. Otherwise, it's like she sent off her mother to a horrible place, and that doesn't sit well...
I dunno. I felt the last scene pretty much summed up The Golden Palace. They all leave Dorothy standing in the lobby with little goodbye and she just slowly walks out. It's like she really was no longer part of the family. It was a very sad moment for me as a fan.
Yeah, but again, I see that as Bea's choice. She wanted to move on, plain and simple, but again, I don't think there was any hostility; if there was, Bea would never have agreed to appear. Would anyone?
And for me, I just thought the last scene symbolized that Sophia would be fine without Dorothy. She had to be, and Dorothy looking on and seeing the hustle and bustle meant that she got a first real glimpse of how Sophia's life was without her around, and she could see that it did Sophia good. She needed to be busy rather than inactive. That's my take on it anyway.
I understand they had a hotel to run but the writers could have written it a little better. And again, I just don't like the concept. Blanche selling the house for them to go run a Hotel? I agree totally, and in all honesty, when compared to the original show, it doesn't measure up, but a part of me wants it in my collection so that it feels complete. I think there were a few Season 6 & 7 episodes that were sub-par as well, but I still want them, even though I don't intend to view them with much regularity. I guess it's like having a yearbook where you don't want to part with it, but you don't ever look at it except for a few rare occasions.
Plus having Miles cheat on Rose, the ep where Stanley comes back and is running from the law. They just weren't good and I prefer not to think of them as part of The Golden Girls.
I haven't seen these episodes so I can't comment, but I do think, from what you've described, that they were bummers. Kind of like All in the Family, where it spins off into Archie Bunker's Place, resulting in Edith Bunker dying. It was a real downer for sure, and I prefer that they had cancelled the show instead of tarnishing it by doing that. I understand where you're coming from...
Well, if it doesn't see release, you'd be happy, but if it does get released, you still don't have to buy it. All I'm suggesting is that there be support for it to be released. Those who want to see it will be happy and those who hate the spin-off can make their voices heard by simply not buying it. Seems both sides can win...
Ed
Joker85 05-23-2005, 02:01 PM Yeah it is a lot like All in the Family. And certainly the last 2 years of The Golden Girls had more than there share of sub par episodes, particularly season 7. I dunno, you may be right, as time goes on and we start to lose the girls I may want that set just for something else with them as those characters. And maybe with it coming to lifetime I can try to view it for what it is instead of trying to compare it to The Golden Girls.

troopoleon8897 06-03-2005, 04:54 PM How Come they are not playing 'Sex, Lies, And Tortillas" and Why Are They Playing The Final Ep to Eps Early...Oh Well IDK Cause they are going to show 23/24's of the series
PZelda 06-03-2005, 06:54 PM Any word on if The Golden Palace will be closed-captioned? Thanks! :)
I'm excited - I'll be taping :D
ETA: The episode, Marriage on the Rocks, With a Twist (11/20/92) looks like it will be a great episode! There was a mini The Carol Burnett Show reunion, as Tim Conway and Harvey Korman guested in that episode. Betty White was a regular TCBS guest. I can't wait! :D
SoapLuver 06-04-2005, 08:04 PM I think I taped the series when it was on back in the day (scattered on tapes). it had some good moments- but it's true, it lacked without Bea (like Betty said, it was like taking off one of the legs from a chair).
Edster2973 06-04-2005, 08:27 PM This is great news! Hopefully the spin-off will be popular enough in re-runs to merit releasing it on DVD after Season 7 is released. One can only hope...
Ed

Not sure, probably.

That's alright. I'll find out when it's nearly time for GP to air. :)

I think they will if they caption everything else. If The Golden Girls is closed-captioned, then there is no reason why The Golden Palace shouldn't.
I'll be recording this show since it maybe our last chance to see it again. I was hoping Lifetime would have added it on to The Golden Girls run since this is basically part of GG.

I think there could be a possibility that Buena Vista will release Golden Palace after season 7 of GG, but of course, that's probably three years away
Scoobiedoo30 07-07-2005, 01:03 AM It is going to be good to see The Golden Palace on Lifetime Network.
FrankieKaufman 07-08-2005, 12:19 PM I'm so glad to hear that they will finally be airing Golden Palace. I'm such a huge fan of Golden Girls and I never watched an episode of GP. My TiVo will be full of nothing but Golden Palace!!!!

“THE GOLDEN GIRLS” FANS REJOICE!
LIFETIME TELEVISION PREMIERES THE CONTINUING ADVENTURES OF THOSE WACKY SEPTUAGENARIANS IN “THE GOLDEN PALACE,”
BEGINNING MONDAY, AUGUST 1 AT 6:30PM AND 11:30PM
-- Sitcom Also Starred Oscar-Nominee Don Cheadle & Comedian Cheech Marin --
July 11, 2005 -- NEW YORK – So what happened after Dorothy (Bea Arthur) married Blanche’s (Rue McClanahan) Uncle Lucas (Leslie Nielsen) in the final episode of The Golden Girls? Looking for a good investment, Blanche, Rose (Betty White) and Sophia (Estelle Getty) put their money into a failing Miami Beach hotel called The Golden Palace, a sitcom that Lifetime is bringing to its viewers for the very first time.
The Golden Palace joins the Lifetime schedule Mondays-Fridays beginning Monday, August 1 at 6:30PM (ET/PT) and 11PM (ET/PT). The Golden Girls airs at 6PM (ET/PT) and 11:30PM (ET/PT).
The half hour The Golden Palace also starred 2005 Oscar-nominee Don Cheadle (“Hotel Rwanda”) in his first-ever television series, along with comedian Cheech Marin (of “Cheech & Chong” fame) as members of The Golden Palace staff.
When ‘The Three Golden Girls’ learn their new hotel hasn’t any staff and wasn’t generating any profits, they’re forced to abandon their dreams of easy retirement and move in as part of a full-time staff. Stories revolve around the problems the new owners have keeping The Golden Palace afloat and the assorted loony guests who drift in and out.
The Golden Palace ran on CBS from September 1992-August 1993, airing Fridays at 8PM (ET/PT).

Scoobiedoo30 10-07-2005, 12:05 AM I am, glad that The Golden Palace is Returneing to The Lifetime Chabnnel that is Good News.
TVJunkie101 10-07-2005, 08:56 AM I'm glad it's getting another rotation as well. I did tape all of the episodes but missed just one, so, this is great. I'll have 'em all.
Edster2973 10-07-2005, 09:20 AM I'm glad it's getting another rotation as well. I did tape all of the episodes but missed just one, so, this is great. I'll have 'em all.
Yeah, this is cool. Alas, we're only getting the edited versions by Lifetime, but it's still better than nothing. Hopefully, if Lifetime feels that The Golden Palace is popular enough, they'll keep repeating the show, and the spinoff will become just as recognizable as its parent show The Golden Girls. The more popular the spinoff is, the more likely Buena Vista will consider it a wise investment to release the show on DVD once the parent series wraps up. If they think there's enough of an audience watching it on Lifetime, they'll think it's a potential money maker and release it.
And Lifetime does stand to gain something from this as well, seeing as how their Intimate Portrait series spotlighting Betty White, Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty is seeing release the same month as Season 3 of The Golden Girls. They're figuring on one being an ad for the other, and they're right. I intend to get both releases for my collection. Who knows, Lifetime may actually release their 'reunion' special that they did with the show back in June 2003, especially if their Intimate Portrait series spotlighting the ladies sells well. It's a case of one hand washing the other.
So... keep airing The Golden Palace Lifetime. You're doing us as well as yourselves a favor...
Ed

GoldenGirlsFan92 05-15-2006, 09:21 PM Does anyone know when or if "The golden Palace" will be showing on Lifetime again?
Scoobiedoo30 05-15-2006, 11:00 PM I think The Next Time Lifetime wiull aiur The Golden Palace will be at 12:00 am Central Time Agter The Series Finale of The Golden Girls.
GoldenGirlsFan92 05-16-2006, 07:25 AM Thank you for the help.
Scoobiedoo30 07-27-2006, 10:40 AM I was wondering how come Lifetime does not show The Golden Palace after
Lifetime airs The Series Finale of The Golden Girls Anymore
that is a very good question. I was noticing that too. But then also, you must remember that Lifetime is cutting this shows airings too.
Scoobiedoo30 07-27-2006, 11:39 AM Yes I remembered that Lifetime was Cutting The episode of The Golden Girl's but I think Lifetime would show The Golden Palace after
The Series Finale of The Golden Girl's
I do not know what they will do, but it would be nice to see the Golden Palace again.
Edster2973 07-27-2006, 07:10 PM The probable reason is that The Golden Palace is not considered to be part of the The Golden Girls syndication package by the producers who own the show, which means that for a network to air the show, they have to pay the same fee that they would for a different show. It's like Cheers and Frasier. They're, in a sense, a continuation continuity-wise but they're two separate series. If a network wanted to air both shows in sequential order, they'd have to pay separately for both shows, and some networks can't afford that if viewers watching the show is not a sure thing. With Frasier it'd be a safe bet, since the show has a loyal fanbase, but The Golden Palace does not other than a few The Golden Girls die-hards. Some fans of The Golden Girls refuse, out of loyalty to the original show, not to watch The Golden Palace. It isn't a sure thing, so they opt not to purchase the rights to air it. Lifetime probably would rather air another show that is definitely going to pay off, or they'd rather start the rotation over again of The Golden Girls episodes since that show's popularity has yet to wane.
Just speculation on my part, but I'd bet it's mostly true...
Ed
GoldenGirlsFan92 07-31-2006, 07:57 PM I'm starting to think that Lifetime will not show GP again.
Edster2973 07-31-2006, 08:51 PM I'm starting to think that Lifetime will not show GP again.
That's not what I was implying. They most surely will re-run the show at some point. They'll just make sure it's well known with a lot of publicity to justify the costs of buying the rights to air the show. They'll probably air it during the times of the year that is most beneficial so that they're guaranteed a lot of viewers. And part of doing that is to not show it every time the rotation of The Golden Girls episodes ends. Absence makes the heart grow fonder and by only showing the show sparingly will the demand for it increase...
Just my speculation, mind you...
Ed
Pavan 07-31-2006, 09:15 PM Well, it started last August and it is now nearing August again. I say it was just a 1-year deal, but I'm not sure. Not a fact, just an educated guess.
GoldenGirlsFan92 08-01-2006, 12:14 AM I would like to see GP on Lifetime again, and I would also like to see Lifetime put "Empty Nest" on.
TVJunkie101 08-01-2006, 07:01 AM It makes sense that it was probably a one year deal. I got just about every episode, minus maybe one... so...
Edster2973 08-01-2006, 08:48 AM Hmmm, could be that it was a one-year deal, but then again, if that were the case, wouldn't they have tried to air it as much as possible during that year?
I don't claim to know the why and wherefore. I'm just trying to think like a network would. As much as anyone may love the show or its actresses, the bottom line is that it has to draw viewers, which translates into sponsors (commercials), which translates into $$.
I think even after the one-year deal (if there is such a thing), we'll definitely see the show again. It may be sporadic, but we'll see it. Given that this last year's airing has revitalized interest in the show, we'll definitely see it as more fans who haven't seen the show clamor for it to return. Also, and this is not meant to be depressing but as a fact of life (like it or not), as time passes and we lose our favorite actresses, I'm sure Lifetime will air the show (or a selection of them anyway) as a tribute to them. The spinoff will increase in value even to the naysayers who hate the spinoff since it will have been the last show to feature said actress in that particular role.
I don't have a crystal ball and can't say for sure, but my gut tells me that the show is on a temporary hiatus and will peep up every now and again. Plus, if we clamor for it to make its way onto DVD, the airing of the show becomes a moot point. Perhaps we should focus our energies into that direction.
Anyone want to own The Golden Palace on DVD? If so, how do we go about it? Ideas anyone?
Ed
Jonathan 08-01-2006, 09:49 AM Well, it started last August and it is now nearing August again. I say it was just a 1-year deal, but I'm not sure. Not a fact, just an educated guess.
That is my opinion too. :)
Pavan 08-01-2006, 09:56 AM Edster, they aired it a lot for a one season show. They aired it after multiple Golden Girl rotations.
GoldenGirlsFan92 08-01-2006, 10:05 AM I was wondering would any of yall like to see "Empty Nest" be on Lifetime?
Scoobiedoo30 08-01-2006, 12:22 PM I would love to see Empty Nest on Lifetime
Edster2973 08-01-2006, 06:26 PM Edster, they aired it a lot for a one season show. They aired it after multiple Golden Girl rotations.
I know they did, but there were several times when they didn't. That was my point. I think (and mind you, it's only a guess on my part) that if it was merely a 1 year deal, they would've aired it even more than they did to get as much out of it as they could.
I could be wrong though...
Ed
Pavan 08-01-2006, 09:12 PM They probably didn't have many plays on each episode.
Edster2973 08-01-2006, 10:34 PM They probably didn't have many plays on each episode.
That could also be the case. They might have had the 1 year deal with the maximum of maybe airing the episodes of 6 times (just a random number). That would mean that Lifetime would be more discriminating during that 1 year to air the show at times they knew would draw the most viewers. So you may have a valid point.
I say we get the darn show on DVD after Season 7 is released so that we don't have to worry about when it airs again. Deal? ;)
Ed
Pavan 09-07-2006, 12:56 PM I think they still have rights, but the plays might be low.
Anyway, it is scheduled for a one-time-only appearance on Sunday, October 22 from 10-11am:

Pavan 10-15-2006, 03:42 PM Golden Palace's airings for next Sunday has been dropped. Replaced by Will & Grace. I do not see it on the schedule at all from Lifetime and I have their grids until end of December.

GoldenGirlsFan92 01-03-2007, 12:07 AM I have a strong feeling that Lifetime will not be showing GP again anytime soon. I went on Lifetime's website, and now they don't even have a page for The Golden Palace.

catlover79 12-19-2008, 11:22 PM I finally got to see a Golden Palace episode with my man Gregory Sierra (:eyes:) guest-starring. I found all the GP episodes on YouTube, so at least they can be seen in some form.
