Starring Delta Burke as Darlene Sheffield, a hardworking, single mom of two growing boys. Darlene's two sons are 18-year-old Luke Sheffield (Adam Brody) and 15-year-old Jake Sheffield (Jacob Smith). Luke is a high school senior and Jake is a high school freshman. Darlene's ex-hubby (the boys' dad), Brad Sheffield (Brad Garrett) lives nearby and has the boys every other weekend. Darlene's best friend and co-worker, Renee Chappel (Megan Mullaly) offers a helping hand with the boys and Darlene's hectic single-parent lifestyle. Darlene and Renee work together at the same women's department store.

Episodes

Ep1: Pilot Episode:
Darlene gets a promotion at work. Darlene wants to celebrate it by going out to eat with her boys and Renee. While eating they bump into Brad and his current girlfriend, Kim (Kathy Najimy).

Ep2: Singles Night:
Renee and Darlene go to a singles bar to meet guys, after Darlene feels lonely after seeing Brad and Kim together. Meanwhile, Luke and his girlfriend, Erin (Kaley Cuoco) get into an argument.

Ep3: Darlene's Day Off:
Darlene takes a personal day and enjoys the day being home alone, until 3:00 when the boys come home from school. Darlene is interrupted by Luke and Erin's constant arguing, and Jake and his annoying friend videotaping Jake, Darlene, Luke, and Erin.

Ep4: A Date With Destanie Ford:
Jake scores a date with Destanie Ford (Hailey Duff), an stuck-up senior hottie who has been known to fool around with her dates in the past. Jake gets all anxious for his date as Luke is secretly jealous of his little brother. Turns out, Destanie is just using Jake to get back at her cheating boyfriend and wouldn't even kiss the little freshman. Meanwhile, Renee dates an actor, who she can't stand and thinks he is just pretending to like her enough to get into her pants. Renee dumps him after seeing him drool over the cute, 20-something waitress while out to eat.

Ep5: Dads and Sons:
Brad, Luke, and Jake take a trip to visit Brad's widowered dad, John (Jakc Wagner) who wants to share the news of he and his current fiancee, Martie (Tatum O'Neal) are getting hitched. Brad had no idea John and Martie were seeing each other, and isn't fond of his 70-something dad dating 30-something Martie. On the way home, Brad informs his sons of Brad and Kim not dating anymore. The boys are not happy after knowing their dad didn't tell them sooner.

Ep6: Late-Night Theft:
After being assigned to close the store one night, Darlene and Renee are faced to deal with a masked robber-who demands them to open the safe. The girls have mixed feelings about giving in to the thief or standing up to him. Just so happens, Brad was out walking and spots the store being opened later than usual, and goes to check out what's the deal, and becomes a "hostage" like the two women. They end up giving him the money, after he fires his gun at a mannequin scaring them half-to-death.

Ep7: Wanting Another Kid:
Darlene realizes she wants another child, after celebrating Jake's 15th birthday. Darlene realizes she would need to have a man in her life. She talks it over with Brad, who is dead against having another kid (with his now ex) especially now being in their early 40s. An upset Darlene decides to look into being artifically inseminated by a sperm donor.

Ep8: Why? Why Mom?:
Luke and Jake are not fond to the thought of their 42 year old mom having another kid. After learning her two boys and her ex-hubby aren't liking the idea of having another kid, she turns to best friend Renee-who secretly sides with the guys, yet decides to be supportive of Darlene. That's all Darlene needed to hear before he heads down to the local sperm bank and look through possible sperm donors.
