I'm just amazed that 85% of the people on this board are DVD ONLY traders. I only been trading a little under two years so first i had to build my collection which has expanded so being a DVD only trader seems to be a couple years away. It seemed like it was just yesterday when there were still lots of VHS traders on here but not today. The only oner i know of is T-Greg. Anyone else?

Ok, because i had stopped looking at traders list on here because i thought everyone were DVD traders only. I haven't generated a trade from this site in almost a year-lol

I trade in both formats and I can do both formats but I understand what you mean, I have run into many people that will not even consider VHS anymore.

I do either depending on what my trading partner wants. I'd rather do DVD, though.

I trade DVDs for both VHS and DVD regularly depending upon how rare the series, as well as the reputation of the trader. If I find a particular series on either VHS or DVD, I will opt for DVD, as will 99 out of 100 traders. I have not yet entered a trade where a VHS trader chose a VHS over a DVD. :D

I've found that most rareties are on VHS, which I prefer to convert to DVD. Once on DVD and the series has been traded to anyone, it isn't long before that series spreads throughout the trading world still intact, no longer such a rare find.

Agent 13 hit upon a good point. For me, trading is a way to further my own collection but also put some good stuff out there. I do NOT hoard any shows and I want them to be available to anyone who wants them. I strive to upgrade quality whenever possible and VHS does not allow this PERIOD. Vhs to vhs, you lose. BUT Dvd to dvd to dvd to dvd, its all the same and the folks who will really appreciate that is the ones who get the shows 8 trades later.

This is my opinion, but there is no place for people refusing to trade shows b/c they are rare. That is crap and selfish and if that is your attitude, I will not trade with you. I have in my collection probably 25000 programs on video and dvd (movies, sports, tv shows, etc. etc. etc.) I will never watch it all, but it is all available to trade, I just wish I had an updated list (neverending project and another story).

Something is only rare b/c you have not found it and a lot of the early tape traders are just not online or no longer trade unfortunately, thus some 1970s shows are harder to find.

In my opinion, vhs is fine for conversion purposes, but after 2 generations off the master, the quality really starts to look crappy and is hard to watch. I would recommend all vhs traders buy a dvd recorder and archive your own collection, you will find many more trades available to you, also, be honest with how many generations old your vhs tape is.

To clarify, I will still accept vhs if something I really want or I can work it out as an archive trade where I will trade something new to a person in return to borrow their vhs and I always as a favor include an archive dvd too. It is a great deal for the VHS trader since they get not only a new series, but they also get their VHS back as well as a dvd back up. ALL at my time and my expense, so as you can see, I really put forth an effort to trade with all folks.

Stop spending your money on blank tapes and the cost of mailing them. You'll have enough for a dvd recorder in no time. DVD media and postage costs are pennies compared to dollars for tapes. At under $200 for a machine now as someone in this thread noted, it doesn't take long to come out ahead if you trade in any sort of volume at all.

Wow, that is generous Tom. I do similar, and in fact love to get people's off-air VHS tapes so I can control everything like ad removal from the the get-go in the dvd archive process. But I'm not in the practice of offering a new series as well in such a set-up. I figure the trade is they provide the footage and I provide the time and that's even enough. Everybody's I've done it for has been super pleased with the results, as have I.

I think some people don't realize that those who don't have a DVD recorder and haven't bought on yet, might have other things that are more important to buy and less materialistic. This is only a hobby for me and until I feel like I can spend $200 in one stop on one machine, I'm going to continue doing VHS. Trading isn't a profession, otherwise I would have something a little more high tech. There's no reason for people to assume that because they have a dvd recorder, everyone else can have on and afford one.

Most of the time when a DVD trader expresses the simplicity of making DVDs, they're pounced on by the "VHS only" traders, when the fact of the matter is, the DVD folks are just trying to help, not intimidate.

I'm not referring to you, lauryn07, but if "VHS only" traders don't want to hear the pros about having a DVD recorder/burner, then don't bring subjects up like "To become a DVD trader I have to buy a... "

Naming someone more materialistic simply because they have a recorder doesn't make sense because, actually, in the long run, trading with DVDs is cheaper, but until you actually have to buy the discs and pay the shipping costs, this is hard for the die hard VHS trader to comprehend.

Some "VHS only" traders get quite upset because a DVD trader chooses to turn down a trade. This is a free country, and we can choose whom we will trade with and what format we prefer.

The fact is, if you want something bad enough, you'll take it in any form you can get it! There are some people out there who started with the first Beta recorders 30 years ago. I'd love to see what stuff they have and how well it held up over the years. That's a gold mine in this hobby as far as I'm concerned. I am always open to VHS trades. If I want it on DVD, I'll dub it onto DVD once I get it. No problem here.
