How many of you guys remember this one? She was the wife of Sam Schoen, one of the heirs to the U-Haul fortune. She was murdered in her bedroom while her husband was away on business. This may have been one of these stories that were only shown on NBC, because I don't remember seeing it on Lifetime ever. I was watching "Cold Case Files" tonight and they profiled her case. I was suprised to hear that a man named Frank Marquis was convicted (and confessed) to her murder I believe in the mid 1990's. He claimed it was a burglary gone wrong but Sam Schoen doesn't believe he has the whole story. Thought I would share it with those of you who remember this story and didn't know there was an update.

I remember this one. I think you're right in saying that it was profiled on NBC. If fact, I think I remember seeing it on UM with an update. They seemed to say that the connection with U Haul had nothing to do with the case. I, however, don't know if that's accurate.

I think I remember this case. Was there something about an answering machine message that tied into the case?

I remember this case as well. I think they believe that the guy waited in the woods and stalked out the house. Eva put her kids to bed i believe and that is when she was attacked. They lived in a big house that was secluded.

There was something about a message..but i do not recall what it was.

I realize that this is an old thread, but TruTV/CourtTV is showing the Eva Schoen case on Dominick Dunne's Power, Privelege, & Justice.

ETA: I'm not sure if this has been discussed, but Eva's husband still believes that his brothers were involved in his wife's murder, even though the convicted murderer never implicated them. Marquis claimed that his motive was burglary, but it was obvious that someone was home (lights, car, dogs) when he entered the house. Eva had needle marks on her body and there was a piece of her bloody bed sheet that was cut out and still missing. The police haven't offered an explanation for this. Sam Schoen believes that, since he is a physician, needles were used on Eva in order to frame him, but that part of the job was botched. These are some pretty provocative questions, but why wouldn't Marquis give up the people behind the murder if he didn't act alone?

Yes I watched the first half of that last night, but couldn't stay awake for all of it. I'll have to see if they're rerunning it soon. It makes me sick to my stomach to see those two miserable sons who tried to steal L.S.'s company from him. Does anyone know if they are still in control of U-Haul? I do know that L.S. died several years ago of what police say was a suicide. Here's a link:

I caught Cold Case Files' presentation of this case today on Bio. I was a little preoccupied with other things while the TV was on, so maybe wiseguy182 or someone who regularly catches the show can help fill in other details not in the UM segment:

1. The dispute over U-Haul was briefly mentioned in the beginning and then left alone for the rest of the segment. Sam Schoen acknowledges he used to feel it was a valid theory, but eventually abandoned it.

2. As you know, a man named Frank Marquis--a man literally looking for trouble while visiting Telluride--shot and killed Eva Schoen after attempting to burglarize the Schoen home. At autopsy, two injection marks were found on Eva Schoen (what she was injected with I didn't catch). To this day they have never been explained. Sam believes this gives credence to the theory that Marquis didn't act alone, and is offering a reward for any more information.

Smacking my forehead--I had totally forgotten you'd posted this. Should've done a search.

I thought the shrine for Eva was lovely. I like Sam. He certainly seems to be a man of conviction.

I just saw this case for the first time today and I'm baffled by some of the aspects. UM left out why Marque was in Colorado at the time, but articles on the internet say he went with a friend to attend a popular jazz festival. Knowing that, how did he find the Schoen household, and why did he specifically target it? According to Marque himself, he says he thought he was robbing a drug dealers house. His account is accurate on the point about Eva falling down twice after getting shot. One of the children remembered hearing two thumps that night. As strange as his story sounds, I actually think it's true. He had the gun in his possession (borrowed from a friend) used in Eva's murder, her hair was found on his clothing, and he ultimately confessed. According to another internet article, the police gave him plenty of incentives to implicate others involved but he wouldn't do it. As great a guy Sam Schoen is, I think his feud with his brothers is clouding his judgement.

Yet another of those tragic cases steeped in sordidity, redolent of Shakespeare's King Lear and a young mother of two children lies dead, shot in the back by a serial rapist who for some reason changes his modus operandi on the night. The whole business proves the veracity of the maxim: Money is the root of all evil.

As I remember the Unsolved Mysteries update said the crime was totally random but was at first believed not to be due to the house being so isolated. The perpetrator was caught only through having left a pair of sunglasses at the scene which someone recognized and phoned in a tip so as I understand UM did help solve the case. I've brought this one up several times as a case of a person, in this case Sam Schoen, being sure one thing happened when it was in fact something else. Interesting that he still thinks there may have been a connection but it hasn't been proven. I didn't remember anything about injection marks--a weird detail which doesn't seem to fit with a home invasion and shooting!

He cased the house and intended to rape Eva, so I think the injections may have been intended to sedate her. She fought back, however, and that caused him to shoot her.

I don't blame Sam for thinking it was related to U-Haul. I think it is pretty clear now that it wasn't, but he still won't accept it.

Oddly enough, some people don't. If you look at Act One of this radio show, http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/342/how-to-rest-in-peace the son whose mother was murdered when he was six had a theory of who specifically may have wanted to target her and why, which the host said they would probably be sued if they repeated. Yet the getaway driver, who was interviewed, said the crime was totally random--they initially approached another house but were frightened off by the woman's mean dog!

Are you saying Marque had a getaway driver that night he murdered Eva? First time I've heard that. Every other article I've read specifically says he acted alone.

Always thought it was weird that Sam specifically mentioned the fact that no one knew he was going away on a business trip, and that he drove his wife's car as if implying that he was the intended target. So why then murder Eva?!

No, the getaway driver was in the case referenced on the radio show. He had agreed to participate in a robbery only, and his accomplices committed a double rape and murder. He did a lot of complaining about still being in prison for being involved in a crime which wasn't what he agreed to. He didn't commit the rapes and murders but as of the program was still in prison anyway.

I recently watched this episode for the first time. After watching the segment, it does make you think that this murder was possibly connected to the U-Haul issues that were currently going on with Sam Schoen and his family. However, after seeing the update and the killer, my guess is that he tried to inject her with something to sedate her so he could rape her but she fought back and he shot her. I think something spooked Marquis and he fled from the house. Nothing was taken nor did he make sure Eva was dead. Maybe the dogs started barking or he heard one of the children get up.

I did some research and found the road this happened on. It's called Skunk Creek Road and UM was not joking when they said its extremley isolated. You cant even use street view on it. It's a bunch of windy roads that are far from the main Rd. I would never live that isolated with my kids!

The fact that it's on "Skunk Creek Road" isn't exactly a hot selling point either.
