View Full Version : Lucille Ball: THE DARKSIDE!
douglasjc 05-03-2005, 11:34 PM FIRST OF ALL, I THINK LUCY IS ONE THE funniest ladies in US HISTORY. LUCY WAS INTELLIGENT AND HER LEGACY LIVES ON. YET, I KEEP READING SHE HAD A VERY DARKSIDE TO HER. I READ FROM ALL SOURCES( FORMER CASTMATES, FAMILY, AND BOOKS THAT SHE HAD A VERY MEAN SIDE TO HER IN REAL LIFE. SHE tended to treat castmates, family, friends and castmates very badly. While, Desi had his demons and did wrong to Lucy many times. I sometimes wonder if Lucy did not help to contribute to the breakdown of her marriage by her personality. I just feel Desi gets all the blame for the breakdown of marriage and feel that some of the blame should be shared by Lucy too. In any case, Desi and Lucy were humans with faults and demons. Yet they left a great legacy.
ricardo/mertz 05-06-2005, 12:14 AM Well, like you said they were human. Lucy couldn't be delightful all the time. the pressures of her career. Not to mention being away from Diesi in the beginning couldn't have been easy.
desilu #1 05-08-2005, 06:15 PM I think things were very exagerated with Lucy just like they were with Desi's womanizing. Sure he did it but, I think it was very exagerated as to how much he did it just like Lucy's mean streak. I said it once, I'll say it again and again, the media will exagerate anything just to get a good story whether it's the truth or not, no matter who it may hurt. I think in alot of ways Lucy was very insecure. Look at her life before fame. It was full of pain and death. I think that there was alot of bad things that happened to Lucy that we don't know that contributed to her insecurities and fear. She worked so hard to get out of poverty not just for herself but, for her family. She ALWAYS took care of her family but, who took care of Lucy? I know Desi tried but she just wouldn't allow herself to completely lean on him the way she should have and I think it was because she had to be in control just out of fear of falling apart because if she would have allowed herself to fall apart then she felt like that was a sign of weakness. However, with Desi behind closed doors, I do think she did open up alot more as long as the public didn't see it or hear about it. She just had to make everyone think that she was strong when in reality she was in so much pain. To her credit though, I felt she was a very strong woman for all she had been through in her early years. Most people would curl up and die but, not Lucy. Just like everyone, I love her acting and how she makes me laugh but I really admire her for the person she was inside for not giving up and for all her hard work just so we could be entertained. For that and so many reasons, Lucy was a true inspiration.

Very well said!

I agree!
BewitchedForever 05-17-2005, 02:57 PM me too!!! That was a very well written post. I hate these tv movies they have on her. Ugh. Especially the newest one...
I think everyone has a good & bad side but the bad things seem to be noticed more, especially if you're a celebrity.

very true...
like sometimes i'm pretty hard on Tina Louise for reasons rather trivial... and well, celebrities are human to!
comedyfreak 04-10-2007, 05:46 PM It does take two, to make or break a marriage.
Madame X 04-11-2007, 07:38 PM I think it was Lucie who claimed her mom was self-centered and not always emotionally available. In the Bart Andrews book, The I Love Lucy Book, it is stated over and over that she was very professional and strict on the set but was also very kind to the supporting actors. Many of the names used for supporting characters were actual names of her real-life friends. She also gave her friends parts in the show.
I saw a documentary about the Arnaz' that showed them at home. It struck me how Lucy appeared to be somewhat shy and withdrawn and Desi was actually the personality kid; the life of the party!
Often, the most creative, talented and unique individuals in this world lack in their own personal lives because they give so much of themselves to the rest of us.
