Watching all the episodes from the series you would think that such a great cop show with some humor would have continued more than 4 years, i was wondering why the series only lasted 4 years, and did not go into the 80's?

I wish it had continued on. It was a great show! :)

I'd guess the reasons were Paul Michael Glaser wanting to get out of his contract after the fourth season that along with a slide in the ratings after they toned down the violence in the third season.

What is it with people like you who make such an ordeal of these things?
Expect everything to run 5 years or more?
Had S&H had poor ratings its 1st season ABC would have canceled it at the end of it if not sooner.

If both David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser wanted out sometime earlier, show would have suffered anyway. I feel lucky that there were four seasons.

They supposedly (https://moviechat.org/tt0072567/Starsky-and-Hutch/58c7307e5ec57f0478f64291/Why-does-everybody-hate-season-four) wanted more (https://web.archive.org/web/20061031122705/http://www.jumptheshark.com/s/starskyandhutch.htm) "cerebral" scripts come (https://forums.digitalspy.com/discussion/2059795/when-starsky-and-hutch-jumped-the-shark) Season 4 (https://merltheearl.wordpress.com/category/season-four/) instead of just more of the same old car-chase & shoot out episodes.
