10-Year-Old Boy Burned After Cell Phone Explodes
A 10-year-old boy in Sherman Oaks, Calif., suffered first-degree burns on his leg and groin area when a cell phone exploded in his pocket, according to a Local 6 News report.
A 10-year-old boy suffers first-degree burns on his leg and groin area when a cell phone explodes in his pocket, according to a Local 6 News report.
Leobarda Villalobos recently purchased a Motorola phone for her son, Yovani. At some point, the phone exploded in Yovani's pants.
He was treated at the Grossman Burn Center.
The family is trying to determine what could have gone wrong since the cell phone has not been recalled, according to the report.
Motorola officials are not commenting.

vienna waits 05-02-2005, 12:34 AM why does a 10 year old have a cell phone?
marmalade 05-02-2005, 12:36 AM Oh my, how...painful.
And to think, I was considering getting a Motorola.
TripperFan 05-02-2005, 12:36 AM why does a 10 year old have a cell phone?
I can see him having a cell phone. When I was a kid, my mom always made sure I left home with at least a dime to phone if I had to. With a cell phone, he's got it with him - plus, his parents can reach him if necessary. If I had kids, they'd have a cell phone - nothing fancy, but in case of emergencies.
Georgia's on my Mind 05-02-2005, 01:18 AM ...how can a cell phone explode?
Ags2000 05-02-2005, 03:33 AM Burns on his groin area, are you sure he is still a boy?
It was only first degree burns. A sunburn for all intensive purposes. No biggie if that's all it was.

I was thinking the same thing. I've never heard anyone say their phone exploded.
Janice 05-02-2005, 12:04 PM I was thinking the same thing. I've never heard anyone say their phone exploded.
These days, I almost wonder if it's a hoax, but this one can't be. Nobody would burn themselves like that, and a mother wouldn't....wait, who knows.
Really, I can't imagine what would make a phone explode like that. Suppose that happened to someone while driving. It could have had fatal consequences.
I'd say that Motorola has some explaining to do.
dlemond 05-02-2005, 12:29 PM I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that a cell phone just sitting in your pocket cannot explode.
Someone is lying.
Or I'm just plain wrong.
One of those two.
:)

 You know, I asked my husband and that's all he could think of (well - the phone being unusually heated up)! Sounds like somebody might have been playing pocket pool with his Fido!!!
Actually he thinks it might be a scam. Also, I noticed that the worst of the burns seem to be on the inside of the thigh. What pants have pockets there??
dlemond 05-02-2005, 03:11 PM Liar Liar

Janice 05-02-2005, 03:39 PM Motorola should consider using a song for their commercials. Off the top of my head:
Great Balls Of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis
The Fire Down Below by Bob Seger
Georgia's on my Mind 05-02-2005, 03:43 PM its like spontanious combustion of a cell phone....which is like impossible.

You're right - cuz if he had a rollover plan, his ass would have been scorched too.
How...does a cell phone explode?
I'm thinking the battery might have overheated.
dlemond 05-02-2005, 04:56 PM I'm thinking the battery might have overheated.
More like his parents checkbook overheated.
TripperFan 05-02-2005, 04:59 PM I'm thinking the battery might have overheated.
I thought of that, but they have very small batteries in them. How could it burn a leg THAT badly? Makes me think more and more that it could be a scam. After hearing that mother in the Michael Jackson case, I'm beginning to think there are more than her that use their kids for monetary gain.
James"Thunder"Early 05-02-2005, 05:01 PM There was a warning about another brand of sell phone battery overheating and exploding. so I don't think it's fair to accuse these people of lying just to get money. I believe the phone exploded.

oh o.k. - whatever - I just hadn't heard of it before and the burns look pretty extensive for damage from a very small battery (forensically speaking).
What other brand was it?

ANY battery will explode if it gets hot enough - that's why they say "do not dispose of in fire" right on the side
if the battery was still hot from overcharging it and the kid did something to heat it up even more (take that anyway you want to, it aint my kid) it is reasonable to assume that it would explode.

If that's the case, then it would be the kid's fault and not Motorola's right? The article is slanting making it look like a defective phone. Obviously we need more info on what the kid was doing with the phone before he had it in his pocket. Hopefully they'll followup with another article once they've had a chance to look at the phone and investigate what actually happened.
Hey - I know mine warns you about bringing it into the bathroom or humid areas. Would that mean they're warning you that it will make your pants soggy after having it in an environment like that??!! ;)
