View Full Version : Computer Help - SO as slow as molasses
Janice 04-30-2005, 11:41 AM I can buzz through other websites, but every page I hit on SO takes a good minute to load. It started last night, and is still that way today. I tried rebooting and ran all the virus/spyware stuff.
Anyone else experiencing this? It's driving me crazy.
James"Thunder"Early 04-30-2005, 11:43 AM It's been slow for me a few of times since yesterday
TripperFan 04-30-2005, 11:49 AM Same here, but I've also been slow on the Pray For The Soul of Betty website. I just ran my Ad-Aware too. All I can figure is that its just a lot of traffic.
Probably George Bush's fault anyways!!
Mr. Television 04-30-2005, 11:51 AM My computer always goes a little slow on this website but it doesn't seem to be going slower then usual.

 Probably.
But the thing is, I'm not talking just slow here, something's wrong. If I hit refresh, the quote, reply or edit keys -- anything...it takes forever to load.
I know what slow is on this board, but something's wrong, and it's only this site.
*lets out Laura Petrie cry* Oh Rob... (robbyrob)

Yeah, that's what's been happening to me - but also on other sites. Then all of a sudden, I'll get it where it's working fine for a few minutes and then slows up again.
Maybe we should just reboot our machines. Frank's always telling me to reboot at least a couple of times a week. I know I'm overdue.
Janice 04-30-2005, 12:56 PM I just fixed it! What I did was shut my modem off for two minutes, and I'm up and running again.
I tried everything else, ran every scan known to man, rebooted, used the AOL browser tool thing.
Then I remembered that during a computer tech support call once, the person told me to shut off my modem for 10 seconds.
I shut it for a couple of minutes to be sure, and I'm completely back to normal.

It's been very slow the past few days for me, and I'm on DSL now. I think when there's alot of people on the boards, it tends to load slow
Munsters#1 04-30-2005, 04:59 PM Maybe too many pictures and files uploaded onto the SO message boards? Could that be the reason why things are a little slow?
Janice, please check the user CP section. I left a private message for you.

Yup - that's what Frank always says to do - usually the first and most simple fix to electronic stuff (same with receivers, phones, pc's, modems). Best to wait 20 - 60 seconds to allow the electric current to COMPLETELY break (if you do it too fast, sometimes it's not enough to break the old current).
Glad to hear you're back in business.
I should do a reboot myself, but I've still got about 12 windows open (and I'm wondering why its so slow???   )

I think that's a possiblity. I've heard of that happening at other sites, where attachments and things can slow boards down, and the amount of traffic a site gets at various times of the day is a factor for some boards.
robyrob 05-01-2005, 03:52 PM bottom line is - if it is just slow on one particular site, there are only a few things that it could be:
- a problem on that site or its servers (possibly too much traffic)
- a problem with DNS resolution (converting the website's "name" into it's IP number) which could be due to a bad entry in your hosts file, or a problem on your ISP or other DNS server, neither of which you can do too much about other than manually going through your hosts file or replacing it (which I WOULD recommend - try Mike's Hosts file (http://www.everythingisnt.com/hosts.html) it blocks a lot of unwanted ads and nasty sites)
Georgia's on my Mind 05-01-2005, 04:00 PM Maybe it's a sign from God.
It loads fine for me. I have Comcast cable now and my overall connection is faster than ever. There might be some occasional slowdowns on the boards when there are a lot of searches going on or attachments uploaded, but it shouldn't last long.
As robyrob said, it could be DNS issues. Or it could be the banners causing a slowdown.
Is it just the boards that is slow or the main SO site? Have you tried an alternate browser like Firefox?
I know my site and the server and I know when it's slow, and I'm not noticing anything out of the ordinary.
spunkygirl 05-01-2005, 06:18 PM It's fine for me now, but a few days ago, the page would not load at all, and that was with Firefox.

You were right TJ. It was my browser. I use Firefox, but Internet Explorer worked fine. I uninstalled Firefox, then reinstalled it, and now it's working great.
Thanks for the help via e:mail. :)

Is there a way to check to see if I'm using Firefox. I've got AOL.

it should say which browser you are using in the title bar at the top of the window, or if you go to the Help > About menu, it should tell you which version as well.
