I just got this "new" DVD recorder and I have a feeling it'll need a firmware upgrade. So I'm downloading one. But naturally there's something about this that I totally don't get. Here's what it says under How to Make an Upgrade Disc:

Write the extracted files onto a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc using the following settings:

* File System CD-rom ISO Level 2
* Mode 2/XA
* Character set ISO 9660
* Single Session
* Write Speed Low

Huh?? I understand write speed low. It also says Packet writing applications for drag & drop copying cannot be used for creating an upgrade disc. Only use a dedicated CD writing application allowing 'disc at once' recording.

Does that mean I can't use Nero?? That's all I have. :(

no, it means that you SHOULD use Nero - the Burning ROM program at least - what they are specifically referring to is that if you try to drag and drop the files in Windows explorer, which would use Window's (Roxio-based) cd packet-writing software (or if you have Nero installed it would use InCD) the upgrade cd will not work.

Oh! What a relief.

Do I have to do anything special to get it to do whatever that says up there? That ISO stuff.

nope - all that other stuff is pretty standard, and "single session" just means do it all in one shot and close the disk (as opposed to when you put the disk back in and add more data to it in multiple sessions)
