(and if it turns out to be a eally easy question, please don't make fun of me. :p ) Warm & Fuzzy 04-25-2005, 01:40 AM What's your question? ~*Emma*~ 04-25-2005, 02:06 AM The question is: "Write down how many electrons there are in the outermost shell for each of the groups" I'm pretty sure the groups are groups I-VIII (1-8) on the periodic table of elements. Belair 04-25-2005, 06:43 AM I'd like to help, but wouldnt know the first thing about chemistry.A girlfriend of mine took the subject in highschool and never stopped bitching about how complicated it was.She was in tears most of the time,it was that bad! Warm & Fuzzy 04-25-2005, 10:22 AM To determine the number of electrons on the outermost shell, just look at the periodic table, LOL. They should give you the configuration. For example, the configuration for Ne is 2-8. The last number is the number of electrons on the outermost shell. Therefore, the answer is 8. Refer to the following periodic table: http://www.nysedregents.org/testing/reftable/archreftable/chempertable.pdf Also note that the elements in Group 1 have 1 electron on the outermost shell. Group 2 has 2, group 13 has 3, group 14 has 4, and group 15 has 5, and so on so forth. Whatever the group number is, mode (%) that by 10. As for the elements btwn 3-12, it alternates. :p I'm doing all this from memory. I learned chemistry last year. Hope it helps, tho. Hollow 04-25-2005, 02:29 PM **** CHEMISTRY! **** IT ALL!!!! get one of those wee little composition notebooks to take notes in (ie formulas for conversions) and label it "useless **** (aka the little black book)" like i did. *Pleasant Tomorrow* 04-25-2005, 03:40 PM **** CHEMISTRY! **** IT ALL!!!! get one of those wee little composition notebooks to take notes in (ie formulas for conversions) and label it "useless **** (aka the little black book" like i did. **** YEAHHHHHHH. God I hate chemistry. I mean, it can be cool and all just...not when I have to learn about it :grr: Chocoholic 04-25-2005, 04:09 PM It's been almost a decade since I took chemistry and believe me, thinking about it still makes me shudder. :barf:  Warm & Fuzzy 04-25-2005, 05:05 PM Oh, c'mon. Chemistry isn't THAT bad, LOL. PHYSICS is the worst! ;) MsOrange 04-25-2005, 09:48 PM not the kind you do in school Thank you! Thank you! I'll be here all week! Don't forget to tip your waitress. Krisalicious 04-25-2005, 09:53 PM **** YEAHHHHHHH. God I hate chemistry. I mean, it can be cool and all just...not when I have to learn about it :grr: That's how I feel about it too. I'm taking it this year and I mean I used to like it... and then we started doing all that math **** with all the calculations and percentages and formulas and now I despise it! :livid: I Love John Ritter 04-25-2005, 10:54 PM Oh, c'mon. Chemistry isn't THAT bad, LOL. PHYSICS is the worst! ;) OMG!!! PHYSICS IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST!!! I HATE THAT CLASS!! Sara Micelli 04-26-2005, 01:59 AM Oh, c'mon. Chemistry isn't THAT bad, LOL. Also, if you're any good at maths, could you help me with this problem (me and my mum were trying to figure it out last night with trial and error  . LoL we're not that good at maths formulas :p ): "The school play was attended by 550 people and the revenue from ticket sales was $4980. If each adult paid $12 and each student paid $8, find how many adults and students attended the play." I have no idea how to do it. Our teacher explains things really fast (mostly no explaining but just writting it on the board and expecting us to figure it out ourselves  ) and he won't let us ask questions. :( If anyone knows how to solve it, can they talk me through it but NOT tell me the answer? I want to figure it out myself. :D Warm & Fuzzy 04-26-2005, 12:34 PM Thanks, I got it now. :) It didn't have the configuration numbers on the sheet I had. No prob. :) Just wondering, what grade are you in? Warm & Fuzzy 04-26-2005, 12:40 PM "The school play was attended by 550 people and the revenue from ticket sales was $4980. If each adult paid $12 and each student paid $8, find how many adults and students attended the play."I can help you with this, too. :) And trial/error is a no-no, LOL. It works, but it takes forever! (unless you get lucky). I suggest you solve this algebraically. GIVEN Total: 550 people adult: $12 ea child: $8 ea Revenue: $4980 let a = num of adults let c = num of children --- with the following information, we can devise 2 equations --- Equation A: 12a + 8c = 4980 Equation B: a + c = 550 --or -- a = 550 -c [I subtracted c on both sides of the equation] ----------------------------------- SOLVE: 12a + 8c = 4980 12(550-c)+8c=4980 [replace "a" with "550-c" ...... see EQUATION B above ;)] 6600-12c+8c=4980 -4c=-1620 c=405 -------------- a + c = 550 [see EQUATION B] a + 405 = 550 a=145 ======================== hope that helps. ~*Emma*~ 04-27-2005, 12:33 AM I can help you with this, too. :) And trial/error is a no-no, LOL. Oh BTW I'm in year 9. Its alot harder than year 8. Thanks tho. :D Warm & Fuzzy 04-27-2005, 12:34 AM OMG I GOT IT!!!! :happyface I'm so slow at maths and science :p . Oh BTW I'm in year 9. Its alot harder than year 8. Thanks tho. :D Anytime. :) ~*Emma*~ 04-27-2005, 12:39 AM I set it out lik this: Let x be the number of adults Let 550-x be the number of children 12x + 8(550-x)= 4980 12x + 4400 - 8x= 4980 4x + 4400= 4980 4x = 4980 - 4400 4x = 580 x = 580/4 (divided by) x = 145 adults = 145 kids = 550 - 145 kids = 405 is that right? Warm & Fuzzy 04-27-2005, 01:08 AM Very good. :) ~*Emma*~ 04-27-2005, 01:17 AM Very good. :) YAY! :D Kay Scarpetta 04-27-2005, 06:45 AM oh my God Chenny, I wish I had your brains at Math. That equation is simple Algebra I and it still confused me, and I'm in Algebra II, going into Algebra III next year! AllIWantIsYourClutch 04-27-2005, 08:06 AM Oh, c'mon. Chemistry isn't THAT bad, LOL. PHYSICS is the worst! ;) HOLY CRAP YES. I miss Chemistry a whole lot. Physics needs to go rot in hell for a long long time. I didnt know there was such thing, either! What grade are you in now? I'm in 11th, taking calculus. It's WORSE than algebra. |
