5-year-old Handcuffed at School

A videotape shows a 5-year-old girl punching an assistant principal at her school in Florida.

Police were called when the educator tried unsuccessfully to calm the girl down.

The child was sent to the office after continually disrupting her kindergarten class. She was handcuffed until her mother came the school to pick her up.

A teacher happened to have a video camera rolling during class for an assignment, but kept recording when the girl started to act out.

The girl's mother says the elementary school administrator was too harsh on the girl. Her complaint has sparked an investigation by the supervisor of the four police officers involved. Two of the officers were new and were being trained that day.

That didn't look harsh at all. I would say the assistant principal was being very sweet/passive with her. And the authorities didn't exactly beat her or anything.

I agree! The mother is probably too soft on her, and that is why the child feels she can act that way!

I say handcuff them both!

Yup - I'm happy to see a little more action being taken earlier. The parents need to be taught how to get these children under control before it should have to get to that point to begin with.

Are you kidding me??!!! This is a five year old!!!! They handled this child, or I should say baby, which is what she is, like a common criminal. If you look at that tape you will see that child was terrified of what was happening to her.

How dare you say what was done to this child was justified.

I guess the Florida police are too busy busting 5 year olds that they can't keep track of the child molestation problem they have.

I saw the video, and I also agree with you. She probably felt frustrated or mad about something......but I'm NOT saying that what she did was right. It was of course wrong, but arresting a five year old for that is way out of line!

Sorry JMO!

The reason I think it was wrong is kids that age throws tantrums all the time and the police isn't called in. I don't see the reason to call the police to a 5 year old. and I agree their time is better spent other places.

I must admit, there are times when I wanted to handcuff my nieces who are about that age.

they didn't arrest the five year old... she was handcuffed-- restrained. the principal probably didn't know what to do--hell if you look at a kid in the school wrong now a days the parents can take ya to court. that kid needs a belt taken to her.

She wasn't arrested. it's not like the story someone posted last month or so about the five year old almost charged with battery for hitting the teacher and making a mess. the handcuffs were to keep her under control, NOT as a punishment.

That teacher is a wimp nevertheless. That was less than an average child tantrum, which children that age aren't even quite morally mature enough not to do. i work in a preschool and have to deal with defiance, that's what ****ing time-out is for. a restraining order might be necessary if the girl were uncontrollably running around the school with a knife or something. if she doesn't know what to do with a child showing typical angry behavior, she shouldn't be working there until she does.

my point being there's nothing wrong with having the police help restraining a violent, out-of-control child for the the sake of safety, but it was highly unnecessary in this case.

Do not bash the police officers in this case. They acted as they thought was necessary.

It wasn't that harsh but why are policemen being called to handle 5 year olds?

Yah...kind of sad when they should be out catching REAL criminals.

Don't laugh. Some police officers do eat doughnuts and drink coffee.

and Jo both do in The Long Night.Actually, I'm glad the cops are active in this part of town. There are so many troublemakers in this apartment I've lost count on how many times I've had to call 911.

good--looks like the kid needs a good scare or twoI agree. Maybe this will teach her to not throw tantrums as such. As mentioned, the girl wasn't arrested, so what's the big deal? It's not like she was pinned to the wall when she was handcuffed. The cops weren't even rough with her.

:( What is going on down there in Florida! Voting fraud! Multiple Hurricanes! Murders! Abductions! I'm gonna take my Mama out of that state and move her to a safer place. Like Idaho! Can't we all just get along?
