WNEW had just been purchased by 20th Century Fox under Rupert Murdoch and renamed WNYW because the deal did not include its sister radio station. Although now technically a FOX Network affiliate station, it would not carry any programming from the network until that October with the debut of The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers.

WNEW-TV was usually owned by Metromedia, the company that usually owned two radio stations like WNEW AM and FM. The AM side was usually ran standards for a long time and the FM side usually has the rock side. I missed the good old days of Metromedia's channel 5. The station was purchased by 20th Century-Fox (now owned by News Corp.) to launched FOX. The call letters was changed as you probably know it to WNYW-TV instead of WNEW-TV because the call letters for NEW is now use for a classic dance station for Mix 102.7. I hope it is a good idea that next year will be the 20th anniversary of the launch of FOX network.
