My grandfather passed away yesterday afternoon. He was in his late 80s and was suffering from Alzheimers. His body finally shut down on him. R.I.P. grandpa.

The hardest thing wasn't that we lost him. Due to his illness, he wasn't the same grandfather I remember from when I was a kid. We knew it was coming soon. Actually my grandma called yesterday morning and told mom he was in the hospital. He wasn't responsive to anybody. His legs had gone completly black because his blood wasn't circulating correctly. The hardest thing for me was watching my mom break down. She just got on a plane to Michigan this morning.

Hey Laura, I am so sorry to hear about your grandfather. You are in my thoughts, and prayers as well. If, you just need someone to listen too, just IM me, or send a email. If, you don't want to do that, then that okay. Just know that I will be thinking of you.

Thank you everybody for your thoughts, prayers, and condolences. It really means alot to me. I guess I grieve differently than most. I haven't cried or anything like that. I guess I feel sad, but in a way I'm glad he's out of his misery. He suffered so long with the Alzheimers. I just look at it as he's in a better place and is no longer suffering.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I never knew my grandfathers - they both died when I was a baby. Its nice that you had time with him and got to know him. You'll have those memories always. As you say, it was probably tougher to watch him fade and your grandma having to deal with it. My grandmother had it and my father-in-law is in the middle stages of it now.

My thoughts and prayers to you and your family Laura.

I'm really sorry to hear about your grandfather. But don't worry, you're not alone, trust me.

My grandfather and great grandfather died about 2 years ago, only a few months apart. So just imagine how I felt about that. First it was my grandfather. He was only 57 and he died of cancer. I think it was lung cancer, but I can't recall - it didn't matter to me what it was, just to hear those words were horrible.

Not only was that horrible, but no one ever told me or my brother that he had cancer until the day he died. My dad told me up until then because my grandfather didn't want anyone to know, but they thought that he wasn't going to last long, so my dad told me. But no one knew he was going to die that day. I wanted to see him, since everyone knew he was close to dying, but my father wouldn't let me, because my grandfather looked really bad. I don't know how he looked, because I didn't go to see him that day, but my dad wouldn't let me go because he wanted me and my brother to remember our grandfather with good memories.

Then a few months later, I think, my great grandfather died, and he was 80 or 81 just of old age. He was a good at fighting for his life. He had his right leg cut off, and I can't remember why. And he was blind in his right eye. But he was still strong when he was kept in the hospital. We didn't know if he would be able to come home, but he did. I remember seeing him in his bed, just lying there. He didn't remember who was in the room at the time, but I could tell he knew I was there with him. But trust me, the older the people are when they are, the easier it is to let them go. I was both close to my great grandfather and my grandfather.

I'm lucky enough to remember them with good memories. Like how my grandfather would tell stories exciting stories of how he always fished in Canada, or just stories of his childhood. They were always interesting. When I was in 3rd grade, my grandfather would always take me and my brother to Burger King after school only on Friday's. After he took us there, he would take us back to his house and we would just hang out there and watch TV.

I'm glad that you also have good memories to remember your grandfather by. Just remember that even though you might have pain right now, a lot of other people have been through the same thing. Losing someone you love is hard to let go. But you have to believe that they're in a better place. I hope you will get better, your family will be in my prayers. And may your grandfather rest in peace.
