I have just gotten dsl today. and iam loving it so far. i dont have to worry about missing a phone call when iam online. does anyone else have dsl? iam through sprint dsl. and i have cancelled earthlink

Same here, I have a cable modem through my cable company so I can go from site to site on the 'net, check email and I receive a whole bunch of fun pages, cartoons and other animations I can go through much faster. I gave up dial-up around September 2004 since it would make the connection and hang up after one minute!! :mad:

Now my phone line is free to take calls as I surf the 'Net. :)

Can you get cable? If not, you should be able to get satellite, although I'll warn you upfront that it has its issues.

Satellite allows for very fast downloads (competing with the multimegabit speeds of DSL & Cable), but upload is around 64K, perhaps 128K on some of the newer models. That is if you get the two-way system. Satellite is also notorious for a high latency or "ping" do to the actual physical time it takes the signal to bounce from your dish to the sky to the main dish (and again). Usual a good ping is no less than 200 milliseconds (ms), which makes online gaming nearly impossible. One-way systems also exist- that is, the satellite receives data at the fast 1MB/s+ speed but upload is handled through an analog 56K modem.

If neither of these (nor cable) is an option, you still aren't out of luck. Nearly all phone companies offer digital equipment and lines satisfactory for ISDN (integrated services digital network). ISDN has been around for ever and is essentially digital dial-up. You will need a different kind of modem called a terminal addapter or TA, but sometimes referred to as an ISDN modem. The TA is specially designed for digital lines. You will also need a digital line and a ISDN capable internet service.

ISDN dial-ups are extremely short, 2-3 seconds, and speeds with a good multi-channel ISP & TA are guaranteed to be 128K/128K.

BTW, ISDN is the technology DSL was built on. ;)

sprint is through my telephone company. another good thing about dial up is you dont have to wait to be connected your already online

I have cable... faster than DSL most of the time. I love it and will NEVER EVER EVER EVER go back to Dial-up!! Ugh... terrible.

I had DSL for a very short time back in 2001, it was better than Dialup by ALL means...But I prefer my cable connection now.

I got it in early 2002, it's about 4mbps as far as speed goes.

same here ill never go back to dial up again. i like that my line is always open now except for when iam talking on the phone

I have Yahoo DSL; great system...compared to Dial-up which sucks especially if it's from AOL

I could get cable, but not without subscribing to cable service and we have a dish. And satellite doesn't fit in my budget.

Interesting about the ISDN. I'll have to check in to that.

I have SBC Yahoo DSL. It's waaaaaaaay better than dial up but its still not very fast.
