In Stephen Cox's book The Hooterville Handbook: A Viewer's Guide to "Green Acres" (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0312088116/qid=1041997927), he has paragraph or two in which Simpson's creator Matt Groening says that as a kid he enjoyed Green Acres each week with with his sister Maggie. They laughed their heads off at the surreal humor while their parents sat and stared at the TV and "just didn't get it".
