'Housewives' look forward to long, hot summer
By William Keck, USA TODAY
LOS ANGELES — After a season of mostly highs (stellar ratings and salary increases) and some lows (reports of on-set bickering), the cast of Desperate Housewives is eagerly awaiting April 26. That's the final day of filming and when their summer vacations begin.
The three fortunate Housewives who landed spots on the May cover of Vanity Fair (Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria and Nicollette Sheridan) came out Tuesday night for a dinner party at Lucques restaurant on Melrose to celebrate Hatcher's solo cover on the May issue of In Style. The other two Housewives, Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman, who were hidden inside Vanity Fair's cover fold-out, were unable to attend.
For her five-week summer hiatus, Hatcher will return to Europe with her 7-year-old daughter, Emerson, for the first time since 1997, when Hatcher was pregnant with Emerson on the set of Tomorrow Never Dies. "We're thinking Italy or Ireland," Hatcher said. "I want to take Emerson to visit old exotic castles."
Hatcher also announced her intention to turn businesswoman with the development of two films she'll produce, a short film she'll direct and the launch of her own cosmetic and fashion product line.
That news came as a shock to Sheridan, who has been promoting her skin care line, Nu Glow. "She hasn't told me that," Sheridan said, joking: "She's a copycat. Hers can't possibly be as good as mine."
Sheridan also said she would not wed fiancé Nicklas Soderblom over the summer. "It has to be at a time when it's a joy to put together, and at the moment, life is extremely hectic."
Longoria, meanwhile, will be headed to Secret Service training camp in Toronto the day after Housewives wraps in preparation for her co-starring role opposite Michael Douglas and Kim Basinger in the political thriller The Sentinel.
"I'm excited to not have to wear (just) bras and panties," said Longoria, who already has spent her $250,000 show bonus on a three-bedroom Spanish-style home in L.A. that is being renovated and will be featured in an upcoming issue of In Style.
