Tomorrow is the day I have to go to the dentist to get my wisdom teeth out. In the morning. I am so nervous. I haven't ever had an operation in my life. I'm more nervous of the thought of if they put me to sleep under the anesthetic. I prefer to be awake during the operation. My dad got his wisdom teeth out in the 1980s or so and he was awake during the operation. I hope I'll be able to be awake during the operation, but if I have to sleep I guess it won't be that big of a deal. I just don't like the thought of being asleep and unaware. I like to be aware of what's going on around me. It will suck after the operation, though. I can only drink liquids and eat soft foods like potatoes and peas and stuff like that. I'm just wondering has anyone else when they got their wisdom teeth out were you asleep for the operation or awake? And, are people allowed to be awake during the operation, or does the dentist not ask them if they do and put them under anesthetic and asleep no matter what? Please reply.

Trust me, you don't want to be awake during it. If the pain afterward is any indication, you don't wanna suffer thru that. Besides, having the dentist's hands and feet (lol) in your mouth for that long has to be terribly uncomfortable. When I had it done, they put an oxygen tube in my nose and next thing I knew, it was over. You fall asleep before you even realize they gave you the gas. You just wake up dazed and confused. I didn't even know where I was.

I've been lucky that I haven't had to get my wisdom teeth out but I'm guessing you're getting about 4 taken out?? As nervous as it is of the thought of 'going under', I don't think I would want to be awake if they were taking 4 of my teeth out at the same time. I got that sedative dentistry done last year when I had to have a bunch of work done on my teeth. You take a pill in the morning, and at the dentist, they monitor your vitals and all. I don't remember a thing until I woke up at 11:30 that night!!

Don't worry about being out. If they do it like when I had it done, they give you enough sodium penethol (sp?) to totally kill any feeling whatsoever! The dentist told me I could stay awake if I wanted or sleep - it was up to me.
Well, since he was GORGEOUS - I made sure I stayed awake! Just felt like a dope cuz of the suction, and this thing that holds your mouth open - wasn't the look I was going for to impress a great looking young dentist!! haha! :lol:
I even wandered into the waiting room afterwards doing a pretty bad Marlon Brando impersonation and cracking jokes. They made me lie down for a while so the stuff could wear off (what a buzz)!!!
I actually found the most annoying part afterwards. You'll have the taste of blood probably which can get annoying. Keep rinsing as often as you can with warm salt water - it helps heal you really fast.
Just take it easy and rest as much as you can when you get home. I had a sleep, but guess I got up too fast and fainted. Other than that, it was really a breeze - didn't have any swelling and very minor bruising only!

I had two of mine taken out in the late 1990's and I wasn't asleep; he just froze me very much and when it was wearing off; I was in a lot of pain so he prescribed me some pain killers which did help (thank god).

I really don't know how they do it, but at least in my case, I was given an I.V. and he put something like Valium in it (I honestly can't remember exactly what tho since this is going back 26 yrs for me) which really relaxes you. Then he said he was going to inject sodium pentathol (not sure of the spelling) but its that "truth serum" stuff anyway. He told me it would start from my feet up - and it did - a really funny feeling - you can literally feel it come up your body. Then he told me to tell him when it hit my head - which I did and immediately starting laughing like crazy because it felt so odd. That's when he said I could sleep or stay awake - didn't matter. I was awake for the whole thing - and it was totally painless - it didn't wear off (obviously the local anesthetic 80s_Fan had wasn't enough!! That's bad).

I've had the gas for another procedure and hated it. I was awake, and just felt totally out of control - like I was paralyzed - will never have that stuff again. Just tell your dentist of your concerns. You could even probably phone his office ahead of time and he or his assistant wouldn't mind discussing it with you to ease your nerves. They don't like working on nervous people either!! I know, my best friend's a dentist.

I had mine out in August and in January. 2 each time. I wasn't put to sleep either time, but they numbed the area so I did not feel ANYTHING during the procedure. No pain at all. The first time went very well for recovery, but the second time I totally swelled up and was bruised on my cheeks. I felt really sick but that was really just the side effectts from the pain meds they gave me.

Yes, sleeping through the prodcedure is no big deal. It's liking napping and waking up about an hour later (less for me).
Surprisingly, not much pain afterward; a little bleeding but not much. My mouth felt strange, of course (sore). And kind of hard to chew for about 4 or 5 days.

Yeah - that's just like I had - no real pain, the bad taste of blood though (I felt I had bad breath all the time from it even though I kept rinsing). But, yeah a little tough chewing - might want to stick to softer foods like scrambled eggs and stuff.

Percacet's!!! They rock!!! I got to admit - I can see how people can get hooked on those babies!! :lol:
Around the time I had an abcess a couple of years ago, I got rear-ended and ended up with double whiplash. Also tore the tendon on the middle finger of my right hand (yes - I'm right handed)! With all that going on, the meds kept the pain very tolerable! Also seemed to give me energy so I actually painted the living room while going through all that and physio for my back!!! :lol: :lol:

Everybody has a different experince with this kind of thing. My jaw surgery was less painful then getting my wisdom teeth taken out.

Luckily, Advil was all I've needed. I guess that wouldn't be enough for you going by the disorders you've described.

I will have to have my wisdom teeth out also. I'm not sure when, unfortunately probably soon. However, I have been told that they won't put you to sleep. I want to be alseep. I don't want to be awake while they are pulling my wisdom teeth out. Apparently no oral surgeon will put someone to sleep to take out wisdom teeth. They will numb up the area and you can be sedated while awake, but they will not put anyone to sleep. I'm not looking forward to it at all. I'm scared and will be very scared when I have it done. I'm not sure how some people were lucky enough to be asleep during the surgery, but here, they won't put you to sleep. Even worse I don't have dental insurance so I will have to pay out of pocket. I'm also worried about all the pain that I will have afterward.

Anyway, I hope it went ok for you when you had your wisdom teeth out.

Its true - they just can't put you right out in a regular doctor's office as you need a properly certified anethesiologist doing it. Its just an added risk anyways. You really don't need it. I was scared too, but once they sedate you - you don't care.

Update- I got my wisdom teeth out Wednesday and the procedure went well. I was under a conscious sedation. They hooked up an IV to me and I was sedated that way. I was awake during the procedure, but I couldn't feel any pain and actually wasn't aware of the time passing. I thought the procedure went fast, but it actually took about two and a half hours. It was funny when I first got home (my dad drove me home because I couldn't drive after the procedure), I tried eating soup after it cooled off a little bit. I'm supposed to avoid hot foods and hot liquids, so I had to wait for the soup to cool off. Anyway, I was trying to eat my soup and I couldn't find my mouth because the area was frozen, so I was hitting my chin with the spoon and my dad was making fun of me that I was like a person in a nursing home because I kept missing my mouth.:lol: I sure felt the pain after the freezing wore off. It wasn't too bad, though. It hurts a little more on the left side of my mouth because they had to do more work on that side to get the lower wisdom tooth out. And, I'm taking antibiotics for a week to keep the incisions from getting infected. Other than that, I'm feeling pretty much back to normal.

I'm glad it went well for you Crystals! It sounds just like how mine was done and its not all that bad. To me, much easier than a root canal! :D
