This show should come on Dvd? Anyone know if there is a chance it's coming on DVD?

My guess is never. This show has been out of syndication too long. No airings = no familiarity = no sales.

That is unfortunate since I always enjoyed it. Joe Kearns was one of the better supporting characters.

Lately there has been quite a few dvds for sale on e bay.its great to see that this classic is not forgotten. it also brings a decent bid and seems very popular!

I don't know about no familiarity. There have been several movies, a comic strip, and a cartoon. If "my favorite martian" can come out on dvd why not this? It is funny but now that Seinfeld is almost all out on dvd Dennis the Menace is now my most wanted tv show on dvd.

Dennis The Menace comic books of the 50's & 60's were a lot funnier than the the TV show. The TV series was a big let down. It did not cross over well into television. The mistake was, they decided to make the show with real life actors and the show came across as a run of the mill sitcom with an obnoxious, bratty little kid. Now if they would have created a cartoon sitcom for Dennis instead and held true to the charm and appeal of the Dennis comics, it likely would have been a better show. I think a Dennis cartoon sitcom could have been just as popular and successful as The Flintstones were.

I really liked this show.Well at lest until Joseph Kearns died.The interaction between the Dennis and George Wilson characters made this show special IMO.I never really read the 50' and 60's comics so I guess I didn't have a comparison.All I know is that this show made me laugh really hard with all the messes Dennis put Mr Wilson in.

The TV show does have some merit, but when compared to the Dennis comics of the same period, the TV series doesn't quite measure up. It just isn't as funny as the Dennis comics are. Jay North tried to make a convincing Dennis, but there was just something missing with his portrayal of the character. And when the series got started, he was already too old for the part. And the original Mr. Wilson, Joseph Kearns, does not at all resemble the Mr. Wilson in the comics. The Mr. Wilson in the comic books is a heavy set, rotund fellow with a grey mustache. But they did do a fairly decent job finding proper looking actors to play Dennis' parents. The father, Herbert Anderson, looks pretty similar to the Henry Mitchell in the comic books.

I'd love to see an official release and the show is much better than the criticism it has received. Tv adaptions of comic strips can never be perfect. It's true that Joseph Kearns looked nothing like the Mr. Wilson from the comics but who cares? He was perfect in the role unlike Gale Gordon who was a fine actor in his own right and bore a resemblance to the comic book character but the chemistry wasn't there between him and Jay North.

Hank Ketcham chose Jay North personally for the role of Dennis and I doubt that a better choice could've been made. In fact, The only other child actor of that time who might have been able to play him was Robert John Pittman who played Seymour on the show.

Herbert Anderson more than resembled Henry Mitchell from the comics, He was almost a dead-ringer for him. The casting of him along with Gloria Henry (Alice), Billy Booth (Tommy) Jeanne Russell (Margaret) & Sylvia Field (Mrs. Wilson), was perfect.

Fine support was also provided by Irene Tedrow (Mrs. Elkin), Mary Wickes (Mrs. Cathcart), Willard Waterman (Mr. Quigley) and Charles Lane (Mr. Finch)

The only bad thing about the tv series is that Jay North got older unlike the Dennis of the comics who will forever remain a kid

I think it would have been better if Dennis The Menace had been an animated series. It would have given The Flintstones a run for their money. The animated Dennis is funnier and more mischievious than Jay North's real life version of the character. As good as the comic books were, I was surprised when they decided to make the TV show with human actors. The TV show is basically a watered down version of the Dennis comics.

I hope the show comes out on DVD someday. I loved watching it in syndication when I was a kid during the 1970s, and I want to relive the magic!

The reason Dennis the Menace was done in live-action is that, in 1959, the idea of
an animated sitcom in prime-time hadn't been tried yet. It would be another
whole year before ABC and Hanna-Barbera gave us the ground-breaking
Flintstones (due, in large measure, to the broad appeal of H-B's
Huckleberry Hound among both kids and adults, in 1958). Eventually,
there was an animated, prime-time Dennis TV special, with a Mother's Day theme (which featured a pre-Baywatch Nicole Eggert as the voice of Margaret). Dennis the Menace: Mayday for Mother aired on NBC,
on May 8, 1981 and was repeated on May 6, 1983. It was based on an
original story by creator Hank Ketcham.

The fact that they are promising extra's on this set tells me it won't be a Shout Select title. They're giving this title the grade A treatment! And it will be available in stores! Sweet!!!

This is good news, I think the Dennis comics are funnier but the TV series has it's charm and appeal also. I will probably get the DVD's as long as the shows are all complete and unedited.
