Introduced in the fall of 1983 as a 1984 model (this one's an '85), the Fiero was an instant sensation and seemingly destined to become the classic the Corvette already was for Chevrolet. But Pontiac never got enough support from GM to keep the Fiero alive, and by 1988 it was gone. Too bad: It was a fine car, and it didn't cost that much either. The Japanese, of course, ended up dominating the low-buck two seat sports car market because GM was too lazy. :mad:

Here is a 1970 Pontiac GTO with a big 455-cu-in engine. Tons of torque here! If I owned this car, the rear tires would last about 3 months!

I just got back from the weekly car gathering. There was a nice '66 or '67 Pontiac GTO. (It was already dark, so I'm not sure of the year.) It looks similar to the one above except it wasn't a convertible.
I watched it leave; the owner obviously enjoys the engine in the car... he pulled out into the street, accelerates moderately, then either shifts into 2nd or just backs off, then floors it. The car left two 20-foot rubber strips on the road! The engine sounded very healthy. From what I saw, I would guess it's a 12-second car (1/4 mile).

The 1976 Astre, Pontiac's twin to the Chevrolet Vega. Exactly why Pontiac needed to sell its own version of one of the worst cars ever developed has never been sufficiently explained. :confused:

Well here are some Pontiacs from an out-of-print book about Canadian Cars. The 1962 Pontiac Parisienne, 1963 Pontiac Laurentian, and the 1965 Pontiac Parisienne Sport.

Extremley rare Pontiac pickups from 1966 & 1968. The 1966 is based on the Grand Prix, and the 1968 is based on the LeMans.

1956 was the final year of the famous "silver streak" models (horizontal chrome strips flowing down from the top of the hood, finishing as part of, or just over the grill). In a historical bit of irony, Bill Knudsen, who was GM Vice-President , approved the initial use of the silver streak on the 1935 Pontiac, and his son, "Bunkie" Knudsen, was responsible for their demise after the 1956 model year.

I sometimes see Pontiacs like that at the weekly car gathering I stop by. They are fun to look at because they were built so long ago. All steel on these cars! No plastic bumpers here!

Sharp eyes might notice slight differences between US version Pontiacs and the Canadian models I posted here; the differences are because Canadian Pontiacs were actually Chevrolets, with Pontiac trim up until the late 50s

1970 Pontiac GTO with 455-cu-in engine with 370 hp and 500 lbs/ft torque.
Good for high-13 second 1/4 mile runs on 1970 tires.

dont feel bad Steve, I loved it too.....had a giant poster of it on my wall when i was a kid.........it ripped to shreds when i took it down to paint my walls though :(

Thanks for the support. The Fiero could have been a classic, and instead GM - not Pontiac - let it become a Reagan-era relic, the automotive equivalent of a Members Only Jacket. :(

A Fiero just isn't for me... underpowered, cramped interior, certainly not big in the reliability department and it certainly doesn't look like a '60s or '70s Pontiac.

I like my Pontiacs big, with big engines to match and a lot of brain-damaging torque! And they must be able to do this: :D

(Thing booted with a 350 4-barrel , but, handled like a tank...on 8 miles per Gallon city, 12-15 HW !! )

Those were pretty nice. Down on power thanks to all of the anti-smog equipment and as you said low gas mileage (again, thanks to all of the anti-smog equipment).

It wasnt THAT low on power when that 4-barrel kicked in.....which saved my friends life once when some looney tried to pull him out of the car ( it was his own fault, for giving the guy the finger but, still.....) We pulled out of that parking lot with the nutball following behind in his car, so, I kicked down the passing gear and we were 0-65 in about 4-5 secs, WAY faster than what that guy could keep up with!
My mom had it tuned up as high as it could be set....which is why it blew-out 2 carbs! :lol: [My mom was the hot-rodder in our family!]

Yeah, I know. I didn't mean it was underpowered. Just the that high-compression 350 from the '60s made more power in comparison. For instance, the '69 Pontiac 350 had a 10.5:1 compression ratio and made up to 330 gross hp and 380 gross lbs/ft torque and the '73 350 had a 7.6:1 CR and made 175 net hp and 280 net torque. The 175 net hp would be about 240 gross horsepower.

I probably have a road test somewhere of a '73, but I would guess it could run a 0-60 mph in about 10 seconds, depending on the rear axle ratio... they were probably geared high (numerically low).
BTW, if you kicked down the passing gear, how could you be going 0 mph?

Well, i didnt kick it down right away....i got moving...noticed the guy had gotten into his car and started to follow, then I hit the pedal to the floor....car took off like a bat on fire! ( I never drove so fast in a parking lot before or since !) :lol:
