I think that the show might worked better if he had a regular lady. It seemed like he was married to his job. Speaking of which is it even conceivable that you can go from being a butler in 1979 to being lieutenant governor in 1984? That is truly bizarre, then again maybe Benson had a lot of education while he was working as a butler.

I always found it strange that he was the only black in the series as a regular. In a series he had in the late 80s his wife was white. And wasn't he the only black on Sports Night? Maybe Robert Guillaime felt more comfortable not acting in shows with other black players. Clayton's character, Marcy or the maid in the red dress above could have been black characters and I think that dynamic would have made the show more interesting- esp. Clayton considering how pompous he was.

Benson did get himself a fiancee later in the series (Sen. Diane Hartman?). I personally liked him better as a single man on the show. I think it made him appear more independent and maybe contributed to his sarcasm...
(Some might tell you that there was sexual tension between Kraus and him..that's a whole 'nother story though!) :lol:
