Yesterday, Nick At Nite ended its "Family Ties" marathon with the series finale. I recall that after the conclusion of the episode, all of the cast broke character and said their goodbyes to the studio audience, as well as the people watching on television. It was a bittersweet moment. Nick At Nite chose to delete this part, and I just don't think it was the right thing to do.

What!? It ended last night? Okay don't you think its wierd and dumb that the Cheers marathon is the whole week; Sunday through Saturday and Family Ties is only Sunday through Thursday. Does anyone know why?

As mentioned in another thread, the only time the curtain call was shown and the episode ran 1 hour 14 minutes was when it originally aired. I don't think they even showed it when they rebroadcast the finale in the summer of 1989.

I believe you are right TJ. I do still have the original airing on video though.

Skippy: Yeah

That sounds very strange to me... Here in Sweden, they have always aired the complete version of all episodes, including the ending on the finale.

However, I think they have occasionally aired a cut-down version of the finale in Norway. Why I don't know - The Norwegian network is owned by the same company as the Swedish network, so they should do the same...

Okay, to return to the original subject for a moment - How did Nick at Nite air the episode? Did they only cut that particular ending scene, or did they shorten the episode in any other way?

I'm pretty sure the original version of the episode lasted 1 hour 3 minutes (excluding commercials), so without that goodbye scene it should be around 1 hour then.

Yeah, I foolishly erased the original final airing from May of '89. I needed the space for a movie and figured "they'll rerun it at the end of summer". But when they did it was minus a ton of dialogue, the curtain call, and the comments from fans that were videotaped. All obviously to squeeze the show into it's hour time slot for the rerun.

I love your name Mcfly! LOL Great stuff!

According to my local paper, New York Daily News, the Cheers marathon is SUNDAY - FRIDAY and does not extend to Saturday. From what I understand they are airing it "uncut" and "re-mastered" Its hard to believe that much time has passed that "Remastering " was in order! Aaaack I'm getting old!

All in all I thought NAN did a great job with the Family Ties marathon. In fact I heard "At this moment" a few times on 'easy listening' stations here in NY - I wonder if that had something to do with it?!

Its too bad that they edited out the curtain call in the finale, it was a nice moment.

That's right- NBC never repeated it after that in the U.S. I can't believe it's been repeated in Sweden.....

I don't think it's anything too unique for Sweden - Actually, I believe most countries have aired the complete uncut episodes (including the finale on "Alex Doesn't Live Here Anymore") during all airings, including reruns.

I can't understand why they wouldn't do the same in the US...
