By genre:

Dramas: the early 60s- shows spit out up to 39 episodes a year and kept it fresh. Stuff like Twilight Zone, Nurses, East Side West Side, Naked City had stand alone stories that were ver interesting to watch

comedies: I can watch almost any comedy that was produced from about 1964-74

The early 80s wasn't bad either for both genres. Right now it is probably the worst time ever for comedies, though,

some years I'd consider.

1980 was a good year, IMO. Many great sitcoms and some great dramas (1981 would be a close second with dramas though).

1993
Last season of Cheers, it was the best of the series.
First season of Frasier, it was the best of the series.
Fourth season of Seinfeld, it was the best of the series.
Boy Meets World debuts, as Roseanne, Murphy Brown, Wings, Coach, Home Improvement, Mad About You, Family Matters, Step by Step and more were still airing.... but most importantly, my three favorite shows all peaked in this year.



However, for dramas.... I honestly believe 2005 has been the best year ever.
Desperate Housewives, Boston Legal, Lost, Eyes, Grey's Anatomy, Veronica Mars, all 3 CSIs, all 4 L&Os, Crossing Jordan, Las Vegas, The West Wing, Numb3rs, Monk and more.

I know their not really "years" but oh well. If I had to pic one year it would probably be either 1983 or 1984.

I agree with Barwars about 1993 and 2005.

I say 1993 because we said goodbye to Saved by the Bell and Cheers, said Hello to Boy Meets World, Lois and Clark, and many more.

2005 because so many great dramas on the air this year. Desperate Housewives, Lost, Boston Legal, Eyes, Smallville.....etc..

Hmm...this is tough to pick just a single year.

Dramas: I think there are some really good dramas on right now, most of them being on CBS. ABC has had good luck with their dramas this season too. 1993-97 was great because Lois and Clark was on, and that was total must-see TV for me. Of course, 1993 was also the year of one of the most embarrassing dramas ever put on the air, that being the Route 66 remake. Damn you to hell whoever made that. Fortunately NBC sent it packing after just 4 weeks. The 70s RULED dramas too. So many that came out, but hard to pick one year because they were on all thru the decade.

Sitcoms: I watched a lot in the early-mid 90s. After about 95-96, they started going downhill. They were pretty good in the mid-late 60s. Animated sitcoms were great in the 90s-00s, but once Futurama was canned in 2004, it's all gone downhill...QUICKLY.

Game Shows: They were the best in the mid-late 70s.

I've always been fond of 1995.

NewsRadio debuted on NBC in March.

In the House (hey, I liked it) debuted on NBC mid-season.

The last half of "Ellen" season two and the first half of "Ellen" season three. That period of the show is probably it's best.

The last half of "Wings" season six, which was, to me the best season. And even though Thomas Haden Church left, the first half of season seven was still pretty good.

Ned & Stacey debuted on Fox in the fall.

Boy Meets World entered it's third season, which to me, is one the best.

This of course is just my opinion. I'm sure that 1995, wouldn't be the "Official" best year of sitcoms. But it's always been my favorite.

I don't know if this counts, but N@N had a great lineup that year also. To me, it was when N@N got good again. With the additions of The Munsters and Welcome Back, Kotter.
