People on the show, and sometimes people on this board, say she is ugly. I don't think she is. She's not exactly a beauty queen, but she has a certain style of attractiveness about her- and she was beautiful in the final episode when she got married.

I think so too. The hairstyles she had later in the series were more flattering than the early ones.

I totally agree. I always believe the exact same thing. I thought she was always very sophisticated and attractive in a way. Very graceful. She did have some good wadrobe in most episodes. There was one episode of the Golden Palace when she came to visit Rose, Blanche and Sophia at their new hotel and she looked stunning. She had class.

I'm telling you, there are some people who just grow on you...and she's one of them.

She's not ugly, but she wasn't a beauty queen either. And yeah, she had charm and wit, so she was attractive in her own way.

Bea is gorgeous even now. She is one of those women who it seems was just born to act in my opinion. Dorothy wasn't too ugly, but her clothes was nasty looking. They were too long and baggy and she even wore long boots in the Miami heat.

I saw Bea Arthur in her one woman show "...And then there's Bea" back in May (in Chicago). She is much more attractive in person - she literally lights up the room and has such a pleasant smile... and she has great cheekbones too! People expect extreme beauty with such talent it seems, she truly has her own radiant beauty.

I agree. When the show first started she had a bad haircut and her voice was more manly. Towards the end of the show she was pretty and wore nice clothing and had a nice voice!!!!!!

to me, bea always appeared with grace and class. she had a certain elegance about her.

I've always noticed how dorothy's voice changed to. I thought that was weird, it went from more manly to more scratchy. I wonder how she got that voice. Was she a cigarette smoker mayber? Either way, that voice is her trademark. Those sarcastic jokes and comments are always the best when dorothy says them. I would love to see her live show.

Yes, Bea is (or was) a smoker. I honestly don't know if she still is, but I remember reading an account by someone who worked as a page at NBC during GG. He worked with the GG actresses on a handful of occassions and he said Bea was a smoker. If she has quit since then, I don't know. Rue was also a smoker, but she quit in November of '89. I can also tell a definite change in her voice over the years--becoming more scratchy. Comparing her voice on Maude and GG, she (Rue) doesn't even sound like the same person.

I don't think Bea would be 78 yet. Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong though. I think she is more like 68. I think she was around 54 when the show started.

I do think she was attractive. She wasn't overtly sexual like Blanche, but she exuded her own charm. However, I thought she made a mistake wearing those baggy clothes. I don't know why she would have tried to hide her figure.

Agreed, towards the end she did dress much nicer. However, I can't understand why she ALWAYS pushed her sleeves up. Why not wear short sleeved blouses? I mean, they are in Miami, for Pete's sake. Show a little skin!! :)

Oh man I totally agree with you. You never hear anyone say oh Archie Bunker is so fat, or Jay Jay Walker is so ugly. Yet you go to the Roseanne board and everyone talks about how fat she is. For some reason we make fun of women for not being a beauty queen but a guy can look anyway and be accepted. Another thing that bugs me is what does a persons looks have to do with there acting? Some of the greatest actors and actresses in the world were less then beautiful. I'm a guy and basically I accept all people, and looks do not matter to me. All I care about is whether someone is a good person or not! If anyone else already posted what I just said, I apologize, I didn't read every post.

Well, overall the women looked great. I still think Betty White is the coolest thing next to sliced bread.:wave:

Also, didn't Blanche have a deeper Southern accent in the later seasons than the first? In the first season she talked normally, but her accent got more "southern" towards the end of the series. I guess you can say she was "unsouthern" during the first season! :lol: Don't let Blanche hear you say that! But she's 1/8 Yankee and Jewish, so why not! :lol:
