View Full Version : I LOVE GIMME A BREAK, BUT IT LOST SOMETING douglasjc 03-31-2005, 07:33 PM WHEN IT MOVED FROM GLENLAWN TO NEW YORK CITY. I REALLY FEEL THEY SHOULD HAVE ENDED IT IN THE 85-86 SEASON. DID ANYONE LIKE THE NEW YORK YEAR Eric777 03-31-2005, 08:43 PM No the NY episodes were terrible They should have stayed in Glenlawn Rosie O'Donnell ruined the show She wasnt funny at all Brieannas21 03-31-2005, 10:56 PM I guess I'm the only person who liked the New York episodes . I have to say that a couple of the New York episodes were bad but I liked them all but two. I just hate the way it all ended, why would we care that Mama Mabel had a date with a man that she knew yrs before. It should have ended way better. But I guess they didn't know that they were going to get pulled. Dwaynew 04-01-2005, 04:22 AM I think the last season had so many new characters that it was predictable to understand how Nell / Addy / Joey would interact with non-family characters. I don't think I've seen all of season 6, but do recall some that I liked, Nell loaning Addy money, Christmas, and Nell working to please the boss. mattyfins loves nell 04-28-2005, 05:50 PM After the 85-86 season it kind of lost some of its spark. Nell was still beautiful, but it just wasn't the same. Has anyone heard of a reunion episode? Maybe Joey and Nell could get together, that would be hot. daso87 04-28-2005, 08:43 PM Well since Nell Carter died in 2003, I don't think she'll be reuniting with Joey Lawrence for a reunion special. mmadluv7 04-29-2005, 02:15 AM Well I couldnt tell ya which was which since I aint seen it in so lawng- if u have any episodes for trade or sell email me at mmadluv7too@yahoo.comHere is something I got already- http://www.geocities.com/quamarr7/nell7.JPG http://www.geocities.com/quamarr7/nell6.JPG http://www.geocities.com/quamarr7/nell8.JPG Brieannas21 05-01-2005, 12:44 AM Great Pics mmadluv7 05-02-2005, 03:53 AM Thanks- it seems as though no one EVER comes here and NO ONE EVER helps other GBA fans- its a lil crazy- but thanks- got some more too Wildchats 05-10-2005, 10:35 AM Yeah, GAB had bad episodes in 1986-1987. (Harry the Hampster one of them, because it was cute, but stupid like the final episode to the Brady Bunch "The Hair -Brained Scheme" but yeah, it was good with the musical number and had a lot of cast in it). If it was renewed it wouldn't last past 1987-1988, but it would have been nice for another season, and just to see what actually happened with Mama and Ernie. I think he was gonna be a frequent Guest Star/ cast member had the show been renewed for a 7th year. Dean Winchester 05-10-2005, 03:02 PM Has anyone heard of a reunion episode? Maybe Joey and Nell could get together, that would be hot. Nell's alive? I wish it were true, but sadly, it's not the case :( Dean Winchester 05-10-2005, 03:05 PM I agree that the show lost it after the '85-'86 season. Moving timeslots did not help, because I used to watch it all the time as a kid until the last season, when they moved it to 9 pm, and I used to have bedtime on school nights at 9, so I never saw the last season until years later in reruns. Brian Damage 06-05-2005, 09:12 PM I don't remember the NY years at all. ThomasE 06-28-2005, 11:03 PM I don't remember the NY years at all. I do. I did like the New York years when those eps aired. One reason in part had to do with the fact that I spent the summer of 86' there with my grandmother plus that is where all my family is and Joey Lawrence was my childhood hero along with Jaleel White when he was on "Charlie and Company". When I look back at the NY eps on VHS, I do see missing elements. I remember seeing Rosie O'Donnell on Star Search. She was talking with Ed McMahon about her new role on Gimmie A Break and what character she would be playing. I would have like to have seen more Kaniski family members there. All the girls were fired but at least Sam got recurring status. alienkattuk 07-04-2005, 12:03 PM Rosie O'Donnell ruined the show She wasnt funny at all THANK GOD! I am not the only one. There was no use for Rosie. It didn't felt right at all. I hated Rosie in those days...........Now, I am a big fan - I loved her on her former talk show. Rosie add nothing to Gimmie A Break. Lamont 07-14-2005, 09:18 AM Was that it all made no sense at all... even by sitcom logic standards. I mean, so the cheif died and left Nell, the housekeeper in charge of his kids... OK i can stretch to that. But then suddenly Nell moves to NY and gets a job at a book publisher when she has no skills? And then the fact that Grandpa would decide to sell the House later and move out to New York also... and Mama Mabel would also decide to sell her house and move to New York also. Ridiculous and forced! Also the cast made no sense. If you watch the credits for the last season, the cast is different every time. At first its just Nell, Addy and the Lawrence boys... but some times, Sam is in the credits, sometimes Rosie is in the credits, Grandpa drifts in and out, and a few times, Mama makes it in and Even Sams Professor is in the credits for no reason and Paul Sands makes it a few times. The last season was a mess... the show didnt know what it wanted to be... sometimes it was about 2 single women and played like that, other times it was about a single woman raising 2 little boys, other times it was about Sam and he school life.... sometimes it was about all the wacky people at the apartement where they lived... it was like 5 different shows.... i dont think they had any idea of what to do once they moved to NY and no idea of how to make it work.... a real shame as Nell Carter could have been a bigger star on tv. Eric777 07-14-2005, 10:30 AM Are you sure you watched Gimme A Break? Sam's professor was in no way in the opening credits Wasnt even mentioned Lamont 07-14-2005, 07:30 PM I just finished taping gimme a break off tv on a local WB station and there IS an episode where PROFESSOR DUDLEY is in the credits, its the episode where SAM is going to drop out of college to support her writer boyfriend.... and Nell interferes, and Prof Dudley hates her! He WAS in the credits for that episode, i think the ONLY time he was, i just taped that one last week!! Eric777 07-15-2005, 01:54 PM Yep your right Wasnt his name Joseph Maher or somethin like that Lamont 07-15-2005, 03:48 PM IM not sure of the actors name off hand, i was suprised to see him in the credits when he was only there for that episodes---maybe they planned a spinoff about SAM at college... it would have made a better show than the mess it became in the last year. I did however love Grandpa and wish they would have had more of him and less of the awful Lawrence boys.... they were just too cutesy and lame for me nerrad 08-26-2005, 08:29 AM NO. The show lost "Chief" Dolph Sweet. It was never the same after he became sick, then soon passing away. Lamont 08-26-2005, 06:50 PM The show could have been saved if not for the Lawerence boys.... why do sitcoms do that? the ratings slip so u add a new young kid? it never works? didnt work with cousin oliver on the brady bunch didnt work with the little white step brother on different strokes and the lawerence boys were the worst i think that once the cheif died, grandpa should have been the leader of the family and his character should have grown up and taken on a parental role instead they just used him for typical grumpy lines, or cheap sex jokes TV_Forever 08-26-2005, 08:55 PM Mamma Maybelle moved to NY with Loretta and her husband who had a job in NY...;) Sorry gang, but I am a traditionalist on GAB and cancellation...NO way should the show have been cancelled after the sad loss of Dolph... ANYTIME to see Nell on screen, was, is, and FOREVER will remain a GOOD thing ;) An 80s Guy 10-03-2005, 09:07 PM I hate the Rosie episodes |
