View Full Version : Contradictions

While every episode if filled with funny situations and jokes, there have been contradictions in the story lines. Like the time Rose said she missed graduation because she was in bed with mono, so she never graduated. Then another time Rose said she was the valedictorian and had to give her speech. (She was 4th out of 19 graduates. She picked the lucky straw to become valedictorian). Another one is when Dorothy told Rose her grandma died when Dorothy was 4 years old. Then in the Mothers Day episode, they are looking back, when Dorothy is a grown woman, her grandma comes to live with Sal & Sophia. Who can think of some other ones?

In one episode, it's stated that Dorothy didn't go to her senior prom. Later, we find out she did.

Sophia's affair stories (although they're clearly untrue) don't sync with her age. Most of them take place in 1912, but I figured out she was born in 1907.

Here's another one: in one episode, Dorothy says that Rose never owned a cat because she is allergic to them. However, in the episode where Blanche and Rose first meet in the grocery, Rose has just taken in a stray cat named Mr. Peepers.

Also in the very first episode...the pilot!

The police officer says to Blance "Are you Blance Hollingsworth?" And she says YES! Hollingsworth was her maiden name!

Also In one episode, Rose said she only lied once. Which is a lie in and of itself because she did lie and previous episodes!

I have noticed things like that. But i really dont think all that should matter. Its the comedy you want. We shouldnt be worried about little mishaps. THey needed to write it that way for the show. I wouldnt get into details. Just watch the show. I want to mention that in the first episode that Blanches last name was Hollingsworth. Maybe the show wanted to change her name after that, thought Devoarox was better.

I agree, but I think it's fun to see the inconsistencies. I don't think they meant that it made the show any less good. I sure don't feel that way.

BTW, Dorothy's mother was born in 1906, because Dorothy says her mother turned 50 in 1956, but her enterance thing for this country said 1908, because they accidently were lazy

Dorothy's sister Gloria came to visit in one of the early episodes and stayed at the house and met everyone. In one of the early 90's episode, Gloria came back for a visit (much taller and looking nothing like the first Gloria) and Rose says to Dorothy and Gloria, "so, you two are sisters?" as if they were meeting for the first time.

LOL - I kinda think it all lies in the hands of the writers of the show. If they could stick with one writer, these contrdictions wouldn't happen. I'm with the post that said it all comes down to comedy though... coz it really does. That';s just my op tho. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

The show was just meant to be somewhat of a lighthearted comedy. It's not meant to be that consistant or even taken that seriously. Plus, maybe some of the same actors (like Dorothy's sister) weren't always available to fill in and play the part, so they had to cast someone else. It's a great show, but it's not real life. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/wink2.gif

That's not why she said that. It was an uneasy silence and she was trying desperately to make conversation. It's like when you have a fight with someone who's more a huge fan of say-Frasier and someone else comes in and says, "so...you like to watch tv...?" It won't distract from the fight, and it may be one of the dumbest things to say, but it's out there already.

*sighs* who knows...

Sophia: "Let me tell you girls the three most important things I learned about life: number one, hold fast to your friends; number two, there's no such thing as security; and number three, don't go see "Ishtar." Woof!"
~~~~~~~~~~
Dorothy: "You'll have to excuse my mother, she recently had a stroke rendering her totally annoying."
Sophia: "Sticks and stones may brake your bones, but cement pays homage to tradition!"
Sophia: "I think im pregnant."
Dorothy: "What happened, the rabbit died laughing?"
Rose: "Sophia, why are you in such a bad mood?"
Sophia: "Excuse me Rose, I haven't had sex in fifteen years and its starting to get on my nerves."
When Dorothy's son Michael is first introduced, the episode where he sleeps with Rose's daughter Bridget, he is 29. That episode was from season 2.
When we next see Michael the following season, the episode where he marries an older african-american woman, I believe he is 23. His wife- to- be is pregnant.
When we see Michael for the last time, in season 5, he is 30. It is mentioned his wife threw him out, but no mention of the baby.
Most of the bloopers are the result of a complete change of writers by season five.
