Well I know what they are doing, hedging their bets.... if enough people buy this "best of" DVD, MAYBE they might consider it worth the cost of producing and releasing the season sets.... I wonder how many series they have lost money on releasing season sets right away. One thing Time Warner (Warner Bros. parent company) is all about is making money!

Chico and the Man - Television Favorites: Episode list
Posted by Gord Lacey
6/18/2005
Here is an email I received;

Yesterday we posted news about 5 "Television Favorites" that Warner Bros plans on releasing, and today we have information on the episodes the disc will include. Six episodes of Chico and the Man (150 mins) will appear on this DVD, which retails for $9.97. The DVD will contain full frame video, English mono sound, and English, French and Spanish subtitles. Look for it on September 27. Here are the episodes that will be on the DVD:
Pilot
If I Were a Rich Man
Chico and the Van
Chico's Padre
Ed Talks to God
Chico's Cousin Pepe

I got that mail too & this one on Welcome Back Kotter, another James Komack show.

The Kotter mail said:

Welcome Back, Kotter - Television Favorites: Best Buy Exclusive
Posted by Gord Lacey
6/18/2005

Back in April we posted news that Welcome Back, Kotter would be released under the "Television Favorites" banner, and would include a few episodes from the series, and yesterday we posted news about 5 other "Television Favorites" releases, but Kotter wasn't among them. We had a few readers email us to ask why Kotter wasn't among them; it's a Best Buy exclusive title.

Best Buy will have this title in stores on June 28, just a few weeks away, and they're already taking preorders for the disc on their site. They're selling this title for $14.95, which is $5 more than the other "Television Favorites" titles Warner announced yesterday. We know that Best Buy will have an exclusive selling period of a few months for these "exclusive" titles, so it's conceivable that Welcome Back, Kotter could be release to retail on September 28th, but Warner Bros didn't want to announce it just before it goes on sale at Best Buy, and may do so at a later date. That's pure speculation on our part, but it seems to make sense. It's likely this release will contain 6 episodes of the show, and come in somewhere around 150 mins.

I agree with Luckymamma, they are definitely waiting to see how many dvds they sell before they decide to make any more dvds of Chico and the Man. I hope they advertise the dvds well. I am guessing if they mention that Freddie Prinze Jr's dad is in this dvd, then they might sell really well.

Perhaps someone should pop over to jr's site and mention that this dvd is coming out September so we can help drive upt he sales ;)

The weird thing about this is that Warner already let it be known that they planned on releasing a season set of Chico. As part of their 50th Anniversary TV-DVD rebate offer, it clearly states "Chico and the Man: Any Complete Season Set" as part of the offer. Why couldn't they just go ahead with the season set instead of a single disc compilation? They need to get with it with the older shows.

Luckymama58

I did it, thanks vashti1999 for the link.. I thanked Warner Bros for releasing the best of DVD in September but I told them that the season sets would be more advantageous to the fans and more collectable besides. I hope it helped.

I guess they use this to measure the popularity of a show. I'm a huge fan of retro stuff. I bought Fat Albert and Fraggle Rock only to find out later they are re-releasing the stuff in complete season sets. Really getting annoying. Add to that the realization that so many of these shows have missing portions (very disappointed in Little House On The Prairie) for one reason of another. Still, at least we're getting something! For $10 I'll buy that Chico DVD and enjoy it. But I'll be thinking about a season set in the future.

This is good news and a very welcome start. I see that many of you have started writing to Warner Brothers about a season set. While this may be a bit presumptious to say, I think that the season sets will come by the end of the year. See they announced when I first posted this that they were working on releasing Chico along with the George Lopez show. We also know that a season set of Welcome Back, Kotter will be coming in September. Given this info and the fact that nothing has been said about George's show, I think we should just hang tight til September. There could be word then as to when we can expect a season set. I mean I really don't want to get any false hopes up, but I just have this feeling (I guess you could say) that our season sets are closer than you may think.

We also know that a season set of Welcome Back, Kotter will be coming in September.

How do we know this exactly? There hasn't been any mention of a Welcome Back Kotter season set coming out in September.

Concerning Chico, there might be some discouraging news. Warner's latest rebate flyer doesn't list Chico & The Man - Any Complete Season Set. It was included on an earlier version of the rebate offer, but now it isn't listed at all, so I wonder if they decided against releasing a season set. You can see the flyer here:

Each of the four seasons had 22 half hour episodes. They say that this DVD will be 150 minutes, and they did allow about 5 minutes for commercials when they taped them back then, so it means these 6 episodes on the best of DVD should be uncut! YEAH!!! :D

What did you think of raul would you like to have episodes on him. whatever happened to Charo.

Joy
07-02-2005, 09:44 AM
I think Gabriell Malcar(raul) was a fine young actor and had he been cast in something else first, other than a 'replacement' to fill the shoes of the best commedian, and as half of a great comedy duo (Freddie and Jack) he would have had a great career. The show lost a lot of it's viewership after Freddie's passing and he never got to really show his talent.
I did see him on an episode of the love boat about that time, ironically also playing a kid in need of a home who getts adopted by Robert Urich and I believe his real life wife .
it was sweet.

Luckymama58

What did you think of raul would you like to have episodes on him. whatever happened to Charo.

I am sure if the show had started on the premise with Raul, it might have worked, I did see some of the shows with him and I thought that he might have had a chance. The one episode with him that I really liked was the one when they were going to have Thanksgiving dinner in the garage and Raul somehow manages to get Ed and Della drunk and in this state they decide they wanted to get married.... it was really classic CATM. The problem was that being that I was hooked on Freddie, it was too painful for me to watch the shows without him. So I doubt I would own season four. Gabriel and even Charo were not bad for the show, but the addition of the character of Monica was sudden death!

Freddie's last episode was episode 63 (Ed Talks to God) toward the end of season 3. They filled in with three more episodes without Freddie to finish that season. Freddie was not in season 4 at all, except in flash backs in the two part episode "Raul Runs Away" where Ed finally explains to Raul what happened to Chico.

I have all the episodes with Freddie in them (63) on tape, but nothing beats the quality of DVD as opposed to what I have gotten off of TVLand back in 2001. Tapes degrade over time where, if you take care of your DVD's, they have a hell of a longer shelf life. AND, these episodes will be UNCUT, where TVLand cut the hell out of them. I don't get Goodlife, so I didn't see the uncut versions. The list price is $9.95 for this DVD of the best of.

I would love to wait on the season sets, but who knows when that will be and I am NOT a patient person! LOL

A short-lived comedic TV show from the 1970s, CHICO AND THE MAN followed the ups and downs of two guys from wildly different backgrounds as they worked in a gas station together. Ed Brown (Jack Albertson) owns the garage, while Chico (Freddie Prinze) is his assistant who also lives with Ed. As they spend no time apart whatsoever, they find themselves at constant loggerheads, especially as there is a significant age and race gap between them. Three??? episodes from the show are contained on this release in the TV FAVORITES series.

yes, but it says three episodes, I know the other place told us six. I hope the DVD board is correct, they usually are. Maybe this was a typo. I am not taking any chances tho, it is worth the extra $4 to make sure. I hope they didn't cut three of the shows on this particular DVD. That would make people mad!

Thanks for the info Dani.

I got the dvd yesterday! Whee!!!! :) Oh boy & Mike & I we watched 2 eps already, the Pilot & If I Were A Rich Man. I had read somewhere online something about that the CATM dvd might be in the Best Buy stores first before it would be sold anywhere else. So I figured that might be the only place it was available at for right now. Plus Walmart didn't ever get in Season 3 of Starsky & Hutch & I had to go to Best Buy to get it. So I went to Best Buy to get the CATM dvd & got it. It was $6 something. They only had 3 copies of it. Later we went to Walmart to get our groceries & lo & behold they had the CATM dvd & for $5 something. So I got it at Walmart & am taking the one I bought at Best Buy back to Best Buy. I was shocked that Walmart would have it & plenty of copies to boot. I am now waiting for season 4 of Starsky and Hutch to come out.

Btw, if any of you have a zoom feature on your dvd players, try it out on this. The shower scene in the oil drum looks even better in zoom feature! & Chico & Mando look great! :) :)

I've already seen 2 chapters on the DVD and I must say. Freddie looked beautiful. ;)

The DVD is so clear (much better than the TVland chapters). Plus the episodes seem much longer too.

It was great seeing Mando (Isaac). He looked so young and beautiful himself.

I also noticed that at the end of the episode "If I were a rich man" Mando cracks up at Freddie's acting.

I also have to say how beautiful Freddie and Mando's hair looked. Their hair was styled by a professional and they both were "LOOKING GOOD". No wonder I fell in love with Freddie so many moons ago. He was incredible.........

I'm so happy, I got an email that my dvd has been shipped out, and can't wait until I get my copy. Originally I didn't want to go to Best Buy on the 27th to get the dvd, because I was concerned not every Best Buy would have a copy until they could see whether it would sell or not. Now I wish I didn't pre-order through Amazon.com! I want my copy NOW!!! :happyface

Did those of you who went to Best Buy have any troubles finding the dvd, or was it available in every Best Buy Store on September 27th as they said it would be?!?

Thanks,

Sandra

I love Maccas Freddie Icon & hoosierelvisfan's Starsky & Hutch icon. Eye candy! :) I saw the Beverly Hillbillies set in Walmart & thought it was a good deal too. My hubby wants to get it next month. The clarity on the CATM is indeed great. Much better than vhs. If Freddie had lived he would've no doubt loved vcr's & dvd's... :)
