Yes, whatever you do DO NOT for the love of God download Kazaa. It makes crapware look appeasing.

LimeWire is good, as mentioned above, and is spyware/adware free. It is magnet/gnutella-based & available here
Current Version: 4.8.1
www.limewire.com

Ares is also pretty good. Has no spyware but DOES have an adware component that you can opt-out of during setup. Just be sure to do so. Multiclient with pretty good speeds.
Current Version: 1.8.1
www.aresgalaxy.org/download.html

eXeem is pretty new and is based on the BitTorrent engine. It did contain the Cydoor spyware, but versions 0.22beta+ are spyware free. It has a search bar adware thing called SaveNow bundled with it, but again this you can opt-out of during setup very easily. Speeds are quite good with this one.
Current Version: beta0.23
www.exeem.com/download.htm

AND.....my personal favorite
SHAREAZA. Open source/completely free with no spyware or adware. Multiclient g1/g2 & edonkey. Also handles bittorrents but not that great (standalone BT client always helpful). Speeds very greatly with files, from >1KB to over 1mb/s.
Current Version: 2.1
www.shareaza.com

If you are looking for a good BT client, I recommend Azureus. Once again, completely free & adware/spyware free. Can handle multiple torrents at a time & speeds are excellent, many times over 100KB/s. Lots of plugins are available too, including ones for UPnP & an upload enhancer.
Current Version: 2.2.0.2
azureus.sourceforge.net

I was wanting to download music too. But then again there so many problems
with spyware and adware out there that you don't know who to trust.I mean
certainly those other sites that a few of you recommended maybe just as
prone to viruses as the other sites are. Don't you agree?

downloading music destroyed my last computer so I'll never download a music program again.

Okay maybe I'm crazy, but aren't you all afraid of being caught by RIAA? I used to love downloading, but stopped because of RIAA taking people to court.

Maybe I'm the only chicken in the world.

I've never known of anyone who has gotten in trouble for downloading music. But yeah, I know it can happen. Still the chances are probably very slim.

There's so many users, that they'd only target people that have an insanely huge shared files folder. The solution? Move all your files from the default 'shared' folder into somewhere else. :D

Good point.Thats why I download songs, burn them onto a cd,then I delete them off my computer.I've got about 300 songs off Winmx since I downloaded it last year, and none of those songs are still on my computer.I dont share music either.

not true - they watch certain files, and look for an easy to nab IP...

sometimes they're wrong, but they can easily get you with only a couple of files...
