Hi Board,

I saw recently where Glenn Close made a special appearance this month on an episode of "The Shield". I did not get the chance to watch it. How was this episode?

She's now a regular cast member and though I haven't seen the fourth season yet - I'm don't care for the concept of having Det. Vic Mackey being bossed around by a woman.

I like Glenn Close but she doesn't seem to fit in on the show.

I agree; she has done a decent job, but her appearance on the show was stunt casting - If it worked, it would be magnificent, but anything less would be a failure.

Any of a number of 'character' actors could have filled the role, and done just as well, at a salary low enough that the writers wouldn't feel the need to give her extra lines to justify the salary. She just doesn't have a lot of credibility in the role - when she is on screen, we see Glenn Close, not Captain Rawling.

Fortunately, while the stunt failed, they have done enough with the rest of the show so that this season has been great (the Vic/Shane showdown was among the most intensely suspenseful scenes that I have ever seen on TV.)

Why? Was she a ratings-boosting thing?

Actually I thought she was doing great as the one of the leads. She fit right end with the rest of the cast I wasn't distracted at all by anything else she's done as a actress. :) It looks like the strike team is getting back together though.

She chose not to accept a contract for another season.

I don't really know for sure, but I read somewhere that a lot of movie actors are turning to TV for work because there are fewer films made today, and this may have been her plan.

I'm sure the producers brought her in as a ratings booster (and because she is a highly skilled actor) and would have been happy for her to do another season, but as long as the writing holds up, the show should be fine without her.

Thought she did a great job, liked her better than I thought I would. She'll be missed

1 of Glenn Close’s Best Performances Was in This Critically Acclaimed Crime Show (& It’s Still Required Viewing 23 Years Later) (https://screenrant.com/glenn-close-best-performance-the-shield/)

Glenn Close may be known for her inimitable presence as a feature film heavyweight, but one of her best roles was on the small screen.
