This week the New York Daily News has been running a retrospective on the history of MTV, and today they had a little companion article asking the newer generation of MTV devotees camped outside the TRL studios how much they know about the ancient history of the music channel. Here are the questions they asked, how many do you know? I'll post the answers in a while.

Q: The first video to air on MTV was The Buggles' "Video Killed the ____ Star." (1981)

Q: This former "Material Girl" hit it big with her first videos "Burning Up" and "Holiday." (1982)

Q: Michael Jackson transformed into a [blank] in his blockbuster video for "Thriller"? (1983)

Q: Which former Van Halen front man released a video for the hit "Just a Gigolo?" (1985)

Q: In the Dire Straits' song "Money for Nothing," Mark Knopfler repeatedly sings "I want my _____?" (1986)

Q: U2 sang "Where the Streets Have No ___." (1987)

HAH! Here's a test. Can you name all of the five original MTV on-camera hosts -- no, better yet, can you name every single VJ that ever was?

I can't. But then, I don't care!

The five original "veejays" were Martha Quinn, Nina Blackwood, Alan Hunter, Mark Goodman, and the late JJ Jackson.

I really haven't been keeping track of the others.

The frontman who released a video for Just a Gigolo is now an EMT that would be DAVID LEE ROTH.

Mark Knopler said "I want my MTV." Actually it was Sting singing that line I think.

Dr. Dre said "It ain't nothing but a G Thang"
