NBC's 'Third Watch' Ends Shift
Thu Mar 24, 2005 02:31 AM ET
http://wwwi.reuters.com/comX/images/clear.gif LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - It's official -- NBC's "Third Watch" will not be returning for a seventh season.
The network has opted not to bring back the Warner Bros. TV/John Wells Prods. drama about cops, paramedics and firefighters serving the graveyard shift in New York.

Peabody-winning "Third Watch," on hiatus to make room for midseason entry "Law & Order: Trial by Jury," will return with the remainder of its sixth season, ending its run with a series finale.

I read about that today. NBC renews West Wing and ER both which are way past their prime and cancels Third Watch. Its pittiful.

Medical Investigation will go too, Third Watch actually did better than it did.

I just hope they have a good finale and don't end in a cliffhanger.

It's not really a shock- it's basically been just getting by for 3 seasons now. On top of that, it's quite expensive to produce. Medical Investigation, although likely to be cancelled, has the advantage because it's a first year series and the licensing fee is still cheap.

It also does worst in the ratings. After Numbers premiered its ratings really went south.

They actually weren't too bad.

Weekly ratings for Medical Investigation:

9.7 million viewers
9.3
7.2 (repeat)
6.8 (Num3ers premiere week)
8.8
7.8
11.4 (Third Watch crossover)
8.3

Of course, it's all a moot point since TBJ came along, although it's ratings are nothing to write home about. Still, if NBC is unable to find a suitable drama to air at 9pm, MI might just come back, especially considering that JAG is likely ending on CBS and the timeslot will be wide open. That's a big if, however.

Tonights show was great. It looks like the police station is going to get blown up. Next week is the finale and Doc, Kim, and Jimmy return. I can't wait. I bet its going to be good. I just get so mad because this show is still fresh and some other shows that have already been renewed haven't been fresh in years.
