View Full Version : Question for Funk/Disco fans
GARFIELDKOOL 03-23-2005, 10:21 PM If you had the choice to bump one of these bands in your car stereo all the way up to the max, who would you bump?
The Brothers Johnson
Chic
First let me point out that these two bands had some of the baddest bass players, Lewis Johnson for Brothers, and Bernard Edwards for Chic. That is why I selected these two. Hearing these two bass players thumping in your car is tight! But if I had to chose one, I'll go with The Brothers Johnson! That bass was in a zone! For those of you who are not familiar with either band, both were hot in the late 70s early 80s.
Chic was famous for songs like, "Dance, Dance, Dance", "Good Times", "Le Freak."
Brothers Johnson was famous for songs like, "Strawberry Letter", "Stomp", "Ain't We Funkin' Now" (That's the song with the thumping bass)
Bass players don't get any recognition nowadays, they are original and talented. A lot of rappers rap over old school bass lines, giving respect and credit to the original artist.

They're one of my favorites groups ever. The Brothers Johnson were okay, but I never loved them like I love Chic. I don't have any BJ cds, yet I have 3 old Chic albums on vinyl and 3 hits collections on cd, so that's an easy one for me to answer.

One of my favorite funk bands and definately one of the most underrated, where as everyone knows Chic. Being the funk historian I am lol, I love something about almost every old school/funk band and what I love about the Brothers Johnson is that they could make sounds that no other funk band could make. Listen to their songs & you can hear a little jazz, a little gospel and of course a whole lotta funk. Most of their jams are heavy bass-laden grooves. Lewis Johnson is one of the great bass players, as well as Bernard Edwards. I consider "Land of Ladies" & "Tokyo" to be the Brothers Johnson's masterpieces. These guys had some killer grooves whether it's a gospel-inspired torch song or a smooth instrumental and that's what makes them one of my favorite bands
I love me some Chic too. Everybody old & young know their songs. Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards are two bad brothers - the best friends a groove ever had

vashti1999 03-24-2005, 10:54 AM I would defintely recommend The Brothers Johnson.
I know the hits, like Stomp, Strawberry Letter 23 and others. I've just always been big on Chic and a fan of 'Nard and Nile. I liked whatever they did. That's partly why I became a big Sister Sledge fan. I loved the album they produced for Diana Ross, and even Debbie Harry, just because they did it. Huge Chic fan, but the Brothers Johnson were cool too.
LadyBee 03-24-2005, 06:39 PM The Brothers Johnson, hands down.... especially their first album. "Land of Ladies" is a triumph, not to mention one of my absolute favorite funk songs.
I like Chic. However, I don't own any of their albums.
isiahthomas 03-25-2005, 12:48 PM I like Chic better than The Brothers Johnson. I was listening to the Brothers Johnson's Strawberry Letter 23 song this morning. I like the guitar solo in the middle of the song. I wonder which brother did that. What's up with their yellow outfits on the album cover of Right On Time? Hahahahahahahahahaha. Right On Time is a nice album. I like the songs Runnin For Your Lovin, Q, Right On Time, Strawberry Letter 23, Never Leave You Lonely. Their Tomorrow song was sampled by O.C. for his Far From Yours song. Das EFX sampled Strawberry Letter 23 for their What Goes Around song.
