It always kind of mystified me that the saber-toothed tiger wasn't seen much during the show's six-year run. He was always in the closing credits--both versions--where he always won out over Fred by putting him out, and then in the latter opening credits.

I can only recall one scene the cat was in, and it was in the penultimate season. He's complaining about Fred's snoring--meaning the cat could talk.

Any thoughts on why the cat was slighted like this? Hoppy didn't come along until later and he was all over the place--even the subject of a contest ("How many hops can a hoparoo hop?").

The cat did have a name, too--Baby Puss. It was mentioned in various books and coloring books based on the series, but never on the show itself.

True. Baby-Puss was mentioned by name in the comic books but never was
referred to by name in the cartoons. Maybe Hanna-Barbera couldn't get much
mileage out of a cat character (a strange notion, considering what they did
with Tom (of Tom & Jerry), Mr. Jinks, Super Snooper, Snagglepuss, Top Cat,
Lippy Lion, Punkin Puss, Autocat, etc., etc.)
