View Full Version : Are Wings fans mostly female?
Meade 03-23-2005, 01:10 PM I was just wonderin' because it seems like more ladies on this board than men. But I'm a guy, and I love Wings. I was thinking maybe the show tried to appeal more to women towards the later Seasons.
Anyways, its a great show.
TripperFan 03-23-2005, 02:55 PM I'm female too and loved the show, but my husband liked it as well (whenever he got a chance to see it - usually business got in the way).
I think it should appeal to both sexes.
Another great show brought to us by the late David Angell!
barwars 03-23-2005, 04:49 PM I'm a guy, but it seemed to lean more towards women than men. The whole romantic angle is perfect proof of this. Although I really think it's a show that's pretty much 50/50.

Romantic angles are common though in a lot of Sitcoms. But I like this show because I think its a classic show with interesting characters.
Also, I think a man(a heterosexual man) can appreciate Romantic Comedy just as a woman can, although in lighter doses. I think for me, I prefer the earlier episodes because it wasnt so much about Helen and Joe, but the whole cast in general.
Thats why the later episodes seem to attract more female fans. I suppose the women watch the show because they are attracted to Brian or Joe. And the guys like Helen or Casey. I have a slight crush on Crystal Bernard myself.

Im sorry but I totally disagree with your Terry Shiavo sig.
Starving a woman to death is not dying in peace.
barwars 03-23-2005, 04:58 PM I didn't really find any of the woman on Wings to be breathtakingly beautiful, whereas other series of the time had knockout stars.

To each their own.
Starving her to death isn't the right thing to do, but keeping her alive isn't either.

Excuse me, what gives you the right to decide when she dies? Thats up to the Lord. Taking away her feeding tube, she will starve to death. Its almost like Nazi Germany, where we just get rid of or dispose of the disabled. I find it appaling, that you can even support this. I just pray the Lord will use this for the greater good and that something good can come out of this travesty.
And Crystal Bernard was gorgeous by the way, as was Amy Yasbeck.

Excuse me, what gives you the right to play God and keep her alive?? If it were 100 years ago, she would have been dead 15 years earlier. She's alive, but she's not living. Keeping her alive is just as much playing God as not giving a feeding tube.
It boggles me how someone can believe in God, but feel that living braindead on a feeding tube is better than being in heaven.
Ahh yes, God really wants it that way.

But guess what? Its not 100 years ago. Its today ! And God gave us this technology for a reason. She is not in a coma. Shes not even on a resperator. She just uses a tube for nourishment. To deny a functioning, living, human breathing nourishment is cruel beyond all reasoning.
What we are doing by removing the feeding tube is hastening her death.
And thats an enirely different situation than letting her die naturally.

God didn't "give us technology".... humans discovered it. Ever heard of free will??
There is a HUGE difference between being in a coma and being braindead. People can snap out of comas.... there is no reversing being braindead.
She uses the tube for nourishment.... for what?! To be alive for the next feeding? Let her die, let her be with God.
Janice 03-23-2005, 05:40 PM Get your facts straight. Terri is not brain dead. She's brain damaged. Some babies are born that way. Maybe we should kill them off at birth...or kill
Alzheimer patients. They don't know what's going on either.
barwars 03-23-2005, 05:47 PM If I had a child who was brain damaged, who would have to be fed through a feeding tube the rest of their life, just to sit there and literally watch the world go bye as they can do nothing. Can't talk, can't react. I would want them to die peacefully.
I know the two of you believe in God.... why can't she be with him??
Janice 03-23-2005, 06:00 PM If I had a child who was brain damaged, who would have to be fed through a feeding tube the rest of their life, just to sit there and literally watch the world go bye as they can do nothing. Can't talk, can't react. I would want them to die peacefully.

Employing your logic, anyone who is severely mentally disabled should be done away with. Where do you draw the line, the mentally ********, Alzheimer, cerebral palsy victims?
Feeding tubes aren't the end of the world. My father had one during his illnesses off and on for years. You're not "hooked up" to a feeding tube. It's in your stomach and actually has a cap on it that is opened when the food is poured in twice a day. It's not even a machine. It's similiar to an IV.
Some people walk around with a colostomy bag because they've had to have their colon removed. Your feces go into this bag which is clipped outside your pants, under your shirt. Otherwise perfectly healthy and working people have these bags.
If I had a brain damaged child who needed assistance with nourishment, I wouldn't want that child starved to death or put down like a dog. It's as if Terri is mentally ********. She could have been born that way. She's not terminally ill. All she needs is nourishment to live, the same as all of us.

Alzheimer patients can have lives though. They can talk, they can eat on their own, they can react. My grandfather has Alzheimer's.... there's no reason in the world why he would need to die. Whereas my cousin was born with brain damage in 2003 and passed away within two hours because my aunt and uncle made the decision that it would be better for her to be in heaven, than be on earth only waiting to die.
TripperFan 03-23-2005, 06:06 PM Im sorry but I totally disagree with your Terry Shiavo sig.

Exactly!! Especially when "today" is highlighted - if it were lethal injection or my morhpine overdoes even, o.k. - but to let anything die by starving and holding back water and other vitals is the cruelest form of punishment. Even death row inmates are put to death quickly.
But sorry - I know I'm off topic here and don't want to get any disputes started. That's for another forum.
I do agree that I prefer the earlier episodes of Wings. And yeah, Friends always had the "romantic" angle all the way through, and it definitely is a 50/50 male/female fan based show!
barwars 03-23-2005, 06:09 PM Employing your logic, anyone who is severely mentally disabled should be done away with. Where do you draw the line, the mentally ********, Alzheimer, cerebral palsy victims?

The mentally ******** can live practically normal lives, as can Alzheimer patients and cerebral palsy victims.
If I had a child who was brain damaged to the same degree as Terri, I most certainly would want the child to die in peace. Keeping the child alive does nothing for them, and quite frankly, is a little selfish.
Janice 03-23-2005, 06:09 PM Alzheimer patients can have lives though. They can talk, they can eat on their own, they can react. End stage Alzheimer patients are in another world. They don't know who they are or even their own name. As for your aunt and uncle, that's their decision. I could never do that. Many parents raise brain damaged children. I see it all the time.
The nursing homes are full of severely disabled people, both physically and mentally or both. Can't start putting people down like animals.
TripperFan 03-23-2005, 06:13 PM If I had a child who was brain damaged, who would have to be fed through a feeding tube the rest of their life, just to sit there and literally watch the world go bye as they can do nothing. Can't talk, can't react. I would want them to die peacefully.

Ahhh - but she does react. Even the doctors cannot agree on this. If they were all 100% in agreement then maybe we could conclude something here, but because they don't even know, then who's to make this call.
Besides, from what I'm hearing about this husband, he has a totally different agenda. He's had a long time girlfriend. Why doesn't he just divorce her? Because he would lose out on any estate and insurance money. I saw an interview yesterday on CNN with a former nurse of hers who told an incredible story about the stunts he pulled right from the beginning. He did not allow them to perform any therapy on her and this nurse even had some (circumstantial) evidence that he was injecting her beneath her breasts with insulin - and her sugar levels showed it.
There's a LOT more to this story than just what's on the surface here. He just wants her out of his life, grab the money so he can carry on with his.
Without a living will, nobody has the right to make any decisions for her.
That's why I do have a living will. My mother did too, and even though I myself, could not carry out her wishes, I did not dispute them when it came time. She died with dignity. This way, Teri is neither living or dying with any dignity. :(
But again, we're getting off topic here folks. Maybe we could start a new thread if we want to continue the discussion. Let's just hope it doesn't get too heated.
barwars 03-23-2005, 06:16 PM End stage Alzheimer patients are in another world. They don't know who they are or even their own name. As for your aunt and uncle, that's their decision. I could never do that. Many parents raise brain damaged children. I see it all the time.

Sure, they're in another world. But they still react to people talking to them, they still have the ability to live their lives.
I realize nursing homes are full of severely disabled people, but I for one know that I would never want to, nor see a loved one, live a life that Terri Schiavo has "lived" for the past 15 years. Sure, a few weeks on a feeding tube would be nice -- let your loved ones say goodbye. After that, let it be.
Keeping a feeding tube in Terri is like telling God "screw you, you're wrong, it's not her time to die."
barwars 03-23-2005, 06:18 PM Exactly!! Especially when "today" is highlighted - if it were lethal injection or my morhpine overdoes even, o.k. - but to let anything die by starving and holding back water and other vitals is the cruelest form of punishment. Even death row inmates are put to death quickly.
That's my point. She's suffering. Just put her to death quickly. 15 years is long enough time to suffer.
Janice 03-23-2005, 06:18 PM But the life Terri is living isn't life at all. Sure, she's breathing.... but is she really living??
Terri was never given a chance. In the beginning, she had rehabilitation and was walking and even starting to speak. This is in the court records. After her husband collected close to a million dollars, he stopped all rehabilitation. The money was supposed to be for her treatment, but not a dime was spent on her.
For the last dozen years, he won't allow therapy of any kind...no sensory stimulation...no tv, radio. He won't even allow her to look out the window. He now stands to profit the bulk of her estate of $400,000. She had no living will. The courts have based their decisions on what he claims Terri told him. I don't believe him.
Neurologists have testified that, given the chance, Terri could make progress. I'm of the opinion of giving her that chance which her husband has denied her.
TripperFan 03-23-2005, 06:18 PM Alzheimer patients can have lives though. They can talk, they can eat on their own, they can react. Actually they can feed and react only up to a point. They eventually go beyond that though and will no longer have the ability to feed themselves or react. (My grandmother and father-in-law have it).
Also, actually, Cerebral Palsy isn't a condition of the brain. They have normal minds with average and even about average mental abilities - its their bodies that are affected, but it gives the appearance of mental disability. We have a young lady living across the street from us who has it severely. She cannot talk clearly and only her case workers and family can understand what she says, but her mother translates and she has the funniest sense of humor I've ever heard. Just a wonderful person.
Don't count anything on appearances!! Where would Steven Hawking be today if we all did??

Ah - but she wasn't suffering when the feeding tube was in - I'm talking about suffering from starvation and lack of hydration.
What from I'm gathering, you would propose lethal injection or being assisted so that it is immediate.
This could take two weeks. Would you want one of your loved ones just being left to starve and rot to death? Of course not!
I do believe in the right to live OR die, but only under certain conditions. I have a living will, but there's NO WAY I would want to go out that way.
TripperFan 03-23-2005, 06:23 PM Sure, they're in another world. But they still react to people talking to them, they still have the ability to live their lives.

Terri DOES react - she reacts when her family visits and even cries sometimes when they leave. There is reaction there. That's why there's so much contraversy around the issue.
Actually I read last month in People Magazine of another coma victim who had been listed with the same condition Terri is - I think for 11 years - they recently woke up and are even speaking now.
We just don't know!

Yeah, he has a common law wife of 10 years and two kids. I saw that nurse on a few shows yesterday. She went to the police with her suspicion that the husband was injecting Terri. She went to her boss and was fired the next day.
He won't let Terri have dental treatement. She's had five teeth pulled in the last year. He won't let them treat her urinary tract infections. Yeah, he has her best interests at heart.
Let Terri be with her loving parents and siblings. They'll give her the love and allow her the treatment she deserves.

I would not want my loved ones left to starve and rot to death.... but I also wouldn't want to prolong their life beyond a reasonable length.
I guess it all comes down to who wants to play God more.
TripperFan 03-23-2005, 06:26 PM Yeah, he has a common law wife of 10 years and two kids. I saw that nurse on a few shows yesterday. She went to the police with her suspicion that her husband was injecting Terri. She went to her boss and was fired the next day.

You saw it too eh Janice! Yeah - I couldn't believe the things he's done (or HASN'T done) for her. He's a major creep. I've been following this for a couple of years now actually (I think the last time they tried to murder her).

Just a suggestion - but try researching more about this husband. It might make you change your mind on the reasons he has behind all this. If it truly were for whatever's best for his wife I'd have more sympathy, but this guy is one selfish creep!!
Janice 03-23-2005, 06:27 PM This is my point. She isn't living at all. Let her die, let her go to heaven. Get her out of this war.

barwars 03-23-2005, 06:28 PM Let Terri be with her loving parents and siblings. They'll give her the love and allow her the treatment she deserves.
But now she is beyond recovery, 12, 15 years ago that would have been nice. But now it's just waiting for her to die.
barwars 03-23-2005, 06:30 PM I didn't make your point with the post you quoted. I made MY point. Nice try though.
Actually, you did. She's been sitting in a room, not allowed to look out a window, at a TV, or listen to the radio. She can't interact with her family members. If she were in heaven, she'd be able to do all she can now and more.
Janice 03-23-2005, 06:33 PM But now she is beyond recovery, 12, 15 years ago that would have been nice. But now it's just waiting for her to die.
Again, many people are waiting to die. You want to kill them all? Now who's trying to play God?
I already told you that several neurologists have testified, that given rehabilitation, Terri can make significant progress NOW.
Now there's a novel idea...giving her rehab. Too bad her dirtbag husband sees it differently.
Janice 03-23-2005, 06:36 PM Actually, you did. She's been sitting in a room, not allowed to look out a window, at a TV, or listen to the radio. She can't interact with her family members. If she were in heaven, she'd be able to do all she can now and more.
No, no, I did not. You misread my post. Her husband won't allow her tv, radio, windows or even a wheelchair. He's never allowed her the help she needs to at least improve.
TripperFan 03-23-2005, 06:37 PM But now she is beyond recovery, 12, 15 years ago that would have been nice. But now it's just waiting for her to die.
Actually, I just went back and checked my facts about that People article and the other coma victim - I was wrong - it wasn't 11 years in the coma - it was 18!!! So there IS still a chance for recovery - however remote that might be.
Frankly, I think this all comes down to money and what its costing to keep her alive and the hubby doesn't want to cough it up anymore. Otherwise, why wouldn't he just want to divorce her, and "give her back" to her birth family? Its not because he cares about her? He wants his freedom.
Meanwhile, the vows do say - in sickness and in health, 'til death do us part. And in this case, death should come when Terri's ready to go.
TripperFan 03-23-2005, 06:39 PM Actually, you did. She's been sitting in a room, not allowed to look out a window, at a TV, or listen to the radio. She can't interact with her family members. If she were in heaven, she'd be able to do all she can now and more.
They play John Denver music for her all the time. He was her favorite. There's also a t.v. in her hospice room.
Please - read more about this - I'm not trying to be mean, but I don't think you have all the facts in this case.

Yeah really eh?! And where might she be if he had allowed more rehab sooner.
I cannot believe that nurse was fired for standing up. I think the hospice should have been investigated more. All comes down to money. Shut up the nurse because we're getting regular payments from the husband.

Actually, I stated that. On the rare occasions when Dirtbag allows her family to visit, Terri listens to music and tv. Otherwise, he allows nothing. That's what I've been reading.
Janice 03-23-2005, 06:45 PM let her go to heaven.
Lots of God and religion talk coming from you today. Unusual for you, I must say. Your sig has a slam on Jesus.
Oh, and Jesus is so special because he died on the cross for us.

Wow - I missed that about the husband. (Just heard that her family plays music and makes sure she gets t.v. and stimulation).
Oh now I'm REALLY mad at this guy.
Ya know, if he's successful in this endeavor, and she dies, I hope he has to watch his back every minute for the rest of his life!! What a total bastard!
I've also heard that there was trouble in the marriage just shortly before she went into the coma - she mentioned to a friend that she wished she had the means to start divorce proceedings. He also threatened to divorce her if she put on weight!!! I've heard reports that he tried to control her and would check the odometer on her car to track where she went. He was an abusive husband then and is more so now.
TripperFan 03-23-2005, 06:58 PM Hey Meade - aren'tchya glad you started a thread about Wings??!!
Janice 03-23-2005, 07:08 PM He was an abusive husband then and is more so now.
Interesting to note that the husband "suddenly recalled" Terri's desire to not want to live that way seven years after she was stricken.

Really. Not to be offensive about the subject matter, but I really have no desire to read about this on the Wings board.

Sorry to the moderators for going waaaaay off topic. Happens every now and then. :)

Its a joke, get over it. This past weekend I was Jesus in our church's Passion play. Don't point at me acting like I'm some poser. I work in a Catholic church.
The religion talk is only coming today because it is relevant to the topic at hand. And really, it's not the topic at all, so I'm done with it.

Don't tell me to get over anything. Working in a church, you should know better. Make a bumper sticker asking why Jesus is so special. Wonder how long you'll keep your job.

First of all.... I don't have a car.
Second of all.... I wouldn't put a bumber sticker on my car, no matter what it said.
Third of all.... they wouldn't fire me. It's sarcasm. It's a joke. I know priests and nuns (some of which are family) and laypersons who work for the church (in general, not my specific church) who are able to have a comedic outlook. Is there respect?? Of course. Can a joke be made?? Certainly.
But lets say I wore a shirt that said it.... and I happened to wear it to church one weekend when I wasn't working (because I have to dress up for work), they can't kick me out. They can't deny me communion.

Third of all.... they wouldn't fire me. It's sarcasm. It's a joke. I know priests and nuns (some of which are family) and laypersons who work for the church who are able to have a comedic outlook. Is there respect?? Yes. Can a joke be made?? Certainly.
But lets say I wore a shirt that said it.... and I happened to where it to church one weekend when I wasn't working (because I have to dress up for work), they can't kick me out. They can't deny me communion.
You really should know better. Joking about Jesus is sacrilegious.
Forget the bumper sticker, have a pin made up and wear it to work. I'm sure they'll just die laughing.

You really should get over it.
Ohh no, I made a joke. Send me to hell.
I'm done arguing with you.
Meade 03-23-2005, 07:53 PM Wow, I see we have a heated debate.
Well, I'm going to step away from this. This is a Wings board afterall, and I dont want to make enemies here.
Lets just agree to disagree. I just wish they could come to some better alternative then letting her end this way. It just doesnt seem right to me.
Brian Damage 03-23-2005, 08:55 PM I for one am shocked about all this info about her husband. I had no idea. If this all is true, why aren't the police getting involved? I have been torn on this issue for awhile, but after reading all the stuff written on here, I really feel that the parents should be making the decisions.
Brian Hackett 03-23-2005, 09:55 PM I'm a guy and I loved the show. I don't buy that it was geared mostly towards women. It was a show about true friends in a smaller community. Real people that did real things and weren't glamourous. I think that is why the show is so popular, because it was more real than those other shows you saw and still see today with beautiful people living in condos and million dollar homes. How many people can relate to that? The actors and actresses on Wings were good looking people too. Both Amy Yasbeck and Crystal Bernard are gorgeous. Just my input.
Regarding the women who is dying, I really don't have an opinion on it. I just wish the government would stay as far away from this case as possible. This is a personal matter, not a government matter.

Apparently when they interviewed the nurse, all they asked was if she ever saw him actually inject the insulin into her. When she said no, she couldn't say that, but that there was an obviously wrapped empty insulin container that nobody on staff could account for in the trash, and the injection marks in the skin under her breasts (and I forget where, but somewhere else - maybe Janice remembers) that she never put there, they couldn't do anything. I guess the law states that she has to actually witness it. I just wish they had a chance to put a hidden camera in her room to watch him. But of course, the nurse was fired the following day.
Its very disturbing when you read some of the background to this whole thing!
This is a Wings message board, thank you.
