View Full Version : My fiance must be out of his mind
Mijada 03-20-2005, 08:44 PM I believe I've mentioned on another thread that I'm getting married in October. Tom, my future husband, and I watched and really enjoyed that animated film The Incredibles for the first time the other night. I'm not pregnant yet but we are both in our 30's so we plan on starting a family within a year of our wedding. Anyways ever since seeing that movie we've been arguing over baby names, a subject we've never really discussed before. Tom is insisting that if we have a boy we name him Dashiell with the nickname Dash. I told him no way in heck am I going to name my kid that. Sounds silly to me. He claims that he has had this name picked out for years but I'm not so sure as I've never even heard of it till I saw that movie. He also likes the names Alistair, Lachlan and Ronan. I must be living in a cave because those are 3 other names I've never even heard of and let alone would want to name my child. My brother and his wife had a boy last year and named him Jameson, a name that I thought was a little out there but has since grown on me. I must be old fashioned because I prefer more traditional names but all the names I like Tom thinks are boring and too common. Sorry for my complaining about this but what do you all think of the name Dashiell? Would you ever use it for your child. I personally think it sounds kind of sissified and too similar to Danielle.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 03-20-2005, 08:50 PM I've never heard of any of those names before! I'm like you though. I like traditional names like Adam, Michael, Andrew, Nicholas for boys or Emily, Rachel, Megan or Hayden (OK, that one isn't that traditional) for girls!
Some of these new "hip" names are just too weird for me!
Cactus Jack 03-20-2005, 08:54 PM Id name one of my kids Napoleon for sure
His middle name would be Dynamite LOL or ROn Burgundy
The Modfather 03-20-2005, 08:56 PM He's going to beat up A LOT if you name him that.
AllIWantIsYourClutch 03-20-2005, 08:59 PM *shrugs* Ever since my english teacher had a kid named Finnegan Roelof, anything's possible.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 03-20-2005, 09:01 PM Id name one of my kids Napoleon for sure
His middle name would be Dynamite LOL or ROn Burgundy
 I'd never do that to my future child! BUT I have thought about naming my future dog or cat Napoleon!
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 03-20-2005, 09:04 PM Id name one of my kids Napoleon for sure
His middle name would be Dynamite LOL or ROn Burgundy
Will Ferrell named his kid Magnus. I think that's so ****ing cool.
Penny Lane 03-20-2005, 09:09 PM I have a novel idea! How about John, Billy, Joey or David?
Penny Lane 03-20-2005, 09:11 PM *shrugs* Ever since my english teacher had a kid named Finnegan Roelof, anything's possible.
OMG! What some kids have to live with! Shheesh!
Mijada 03-20-2005, 09:18 PM I have a novel idea! How about John, Billy, Joey or David?
I'd much rather use those names than Dashiell. My 2 favorite boys names are Patrick and William. I will even go so far as to use the name Stephan, a name my mom suggested that is a little different. Tom hates all of them and asks why can't I be more original. I have a feeling though that he is going to win this battle. He says I can name the child if it's a girl and any other children we have after the first son. He just has an obsession with the name Dashiell. I can only hope that he will change his mind or that the name will grow on me within the next couple years.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 03-20-2005, 09:28 PM I like the name Patrick, too! I just recently started to like that name a lot though since I've met some guys with that name.
Pitooey 03-20-2005, 09:35 PM Mijada........ Next time your fiance brings up his favorite name "Dashiell" or "Dash" tell him that the kids in school will call your little boy "Mrs. Dash" after the salt substitute.

I've already brought that up. That was the first thing that came to my mind too but he still won't listen.
This whole thing is really beginning to bug me and I'm not even pregnant yet. It's as bad as my coworker naming her son Atticus. Although I love "To Kill A Mockingbird" I just don't want to name my child after a fictional character.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 03-20-2005, 09:45 PM I also find it weird that a MALE is that obsessed with picking a name out! I didn't think they really cared! I think when my mom decided on my brother's and my names my dad was probaly just like "yeah, that ones fine. whatever!".
MariposaLKB 03-20-2005, 09:56 PM The name--as far as I know--originates with the author Dashiell Hammett, who wrote the book on which the movie "The Maltese Falcon" was based, among many others in the detective genre. Whether his parents made it up or it has a history and meaning beyond that, I don't know. He was called Dash for short--especially by his lover, the writer Lillian Hellman.
And as for a man being interested in what his kids are named, I think that is great! I consulted my husband--even though both of our children were girls and I had my own ideas LOL! We used variants of names that were relevant to his family as their middle names.
Hopefully you'll have a girl!!
Dash is not cool. Maybe for a cartoon.
Suggest spongebob, maybe he'll get the idea.

Well like I said we really never discussed names until this movie came out so I was naive and didn't think it would be an issue with us. As far as guys being obsessed with names my mom was telling me that when she was pregnant with my older brother she and my dad had the same dilemma. He insisted on the name Daniel which my mom hated because she had a bad association with it. He also liked the name Kurt, another name my mom disliked. My dad won in the end though and by brother was named Kurt Daniel. Daniel grew on my mom though because she ended up giving me the middle name Danielle, another reason why I dislike this Dashiell name. Sounds too similar to my own name and sounds too girly. My mom is telling me to just give up and let Tom have his way, because he is the man. My moms so old fashioned.
Luckymama58 03-20-2005, 10:05 PM Just so long as you don't have the problem my sister almost found herself in, our last name was Busch and my mother, as a joke wanted to name her Rose.... we all objected and she didn't do it.
BTW being a person who has been a part of our church's program preparing couples for marriage, stuff like naming children can cause potential problems later on, especially if he has issues with it. I wish you all the best of luck with it.
My hubby wanted to name our son after family names like Nelson and Charles... which I hated, so I decided no family names... that settled things. And we have three well adjusted children two who are adults and one who is almost there. Names can have an impact on a person, just ask anyone who has gone and changed their name legally cause they hated the one they grew up with!
If you have a boy, why not make Dashell his middle name?
That way your hubby can still call him Dash.
Jrnygrl 03-20-2005, 10:28 PM I guess I'm in the minority here, but I really like the names your future husband wants to name your child if it is a boy. JMO!
theshark8777 03-20-2005, 10:34 PM I vote for Cayden.

Dash - YIKES!!! Tell him to watch an episode of the Beverly Hillbillies where they introduce the character "Dash Riprock"!! (a conceited, stereotypical "hollywood" hunk). It may help change his mind! Especially when he finds out that they followed that up with another guy for Elly named "Bolt Upright"!! ;)
Good luck on your future nuptuals and children (whatever they end up being named - as long as they're loved!)
dawsongirl 03-21-2005, 01:47 AM . He also likes the names Alistair, Lachlan and Ronan. but what do you all think of the name Dashiell? Would you ever use it for your child.
I think they're all horrible. But maybe that's just me. I see nothing wrong with normal, common names.
Faith 03-21-2005, 02:46 AM I think Lachlan is a cute name.. Hell what do i know I named my daughter Larita, lol.
Brian Damage 03-21-2005, 11:45 AM I think what your fiance needs to realize, is when the nurses come into your room asking for a name, they NEVER ask the father, they always ask the mother. You have all the power. No offense, but I think Dashielle is a silly name. (Just my opinion) What your fiance needs to realize, is a name isn't about him. It's the kid who is going to be stuck with that name the rest of his life. If you don't like the name, stand up for yourself. If he loves you, then he'll respect your feelings and back down from his request.
Cactus Jack 03-21-2005, 08:18 PM  I'd never do that to my future child! BUT I have thought about naming my future dog or cat Napoleon!
:D Ahhh come on!
You : Make sure you get a freind named Pedro!
Napoelon : Ok, gosh!
Cactus Jack 03-21-2005, 08:20 PM Will Ferrell named his kid Magnus. I think that's so ****ing cool.
Ditto!
Janice 03-21-2005, 08:54 PM I don't care for those names. Your fiance has to understand that your children's names have to be names that you both can live with. Dash, now that one takes the cake. ;)

Remember Dash Riprock on The Beverly Hillbillies? Ellie Mae's movie star Beau?
Pitooey 03-21-2005, 10:27 PM Mijada how do you pronounce the name? Is it...

dawsongirl 03-21-2005, 10:31 PM Mijada how do you pronounce the name? Is it...
Dash e ell ??
Dash elle?
There's another problem. Half of the people you'd meet wouldn't pronounce the name right. I find that to be annoying.
Belair 03-22-2005, 03:05 AM Will Ferrell named his kid Magnus. I think that's so ****ing cool.

Mijada 03-22-2005, 06:54 AM Mijada how do you pronounce the name? Is it...

DASH - ill
Pitooey 03-22-2005, 10:01 AM Sounds like Dash Ewe.
Seriously Mijada if ever the day come to fruition you will have to compromise with him.
Like for instance you could maybe change the name to
Dash Michael Smith (Just an example) that way he's happy and you're happy (maybe)
MariposaLKB 03-22-2005, 10:14 AM I was very big on the meaning of names when we named our girls. I looked up the meaning of the name Dashiell online just now. It is French and means "page"--as in the boys who were servants in a royal court.
Janice 03-22-2005, 10:26 AM Remember Dash Riprock on The Beverly Hillbillies? Ellie Mae's movie star Beau?
 I do remember. Dash Riprock also sounds like a name we'd hear on The Flintstones.
Brian Damage 03-22-2005, 11:18 AM Around Christmas time the kids at school could have a field day with that name....
Do you remember Dashelle and Prancer and Comet and Vixen...
TripperFan 03-22-2005, 03:59 PM Around Christmas time the kids at school could have a field day with that name....
Do you remember Dashelle and Prancer and Comet and Vixen...
How 'bout calling the kid "Exit"?
That way, if he grows up to be an actor, his name will be up in lights in every theatre in the country!!!
*MIBabe03* 03-23-2005, 09:51 AM Sorry but it sounds like a pimp's name.
