Nice title, huh? I just wanted to discuss the original Nick at Nite programming. Forgetting about how the network sucks now (not counting that it's their "highest ratings ever") let's remember the way it was.

Back in 1985, I was three years old. So I don't remember watching it then. I probably began tuning in around 1987. The shows I remember watching were:

My Three Sons - This was my favorite show on Nick at Nite.
The Donna Reed Show - Another one of my favorites. I had a crush on Mary.
Make Room for Daddy
Car 54, Where Are You?
The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis
The Patty Duke Show
Mister Ed
The Monkees
Dennis the Menace - Although I remember it more when it aired on Nickelodeon
Laugh-In
Best of Saturday Night Live

I wonder how hard it would be for N@N to get themselves another channel to show these old programs. Because TV Land just ain't cuttin' it. I want shows strictly from the 50's 60's and early 70's.

My cable company didn't have N@N then. They had Nickolodeon and then at 8pm they switched over to A&E, so I missed most of the good shows. I didn't get N@N until around 1990.

One difference from then to now is that back then, I didn't know in advance what the schedule was gonna be. I didn't have Pavanbadal to turn to for upcoming N@N events. I remember one night tuning into "The Patty Duke Show" and it was "Alfred Hitchcock Presents". I was upset, thinking Patty Duke was gone. I guess it was moved to a later timeslot.

However, I now remember that N@N would air their nightly schedule before each show. The announcer would say:

Next up on Nick at Nite, It's The Munsters. Followed by I Love Lucy. And then Bewitched.

Plus N@N had the coolest and funniest commercials. It's always been a proud channel. Only then, I felt it had the right to be proud.

What is Murphy Brown doing on Nick @ Nite? Or Fresh Prince?

Thats not classic tv ! I make an exception for Wings, because that was a modern classic, but much of the shows they are airing now were mediocore at best. I remember watching Nick@ Nite when I first got cable in the early 90s. I remember enjoying Mister Ed and all the black and white shows. Then they started showing 70s shows like Mary Tyler Moore, etc. But that was ok, because those were classic shows.

But now its gone to hell in a handbasket. They're programming stinks.
I wish they would go back to Classic TV. I can see adding a few modern classics, but Fresh Prince and Murphy Brown are not classic tv!

I liked NaN when there main shows was Lucy, Bewitched, Jennie, All in Family, Jeffersons, Happy Days... now those were definately the days

I was 5 when the network debuted, so I wasn't watching, but *cries*, I've seen footage from then. I want Route 66 back. :crying:

Then they gradually let in some very ho-hum shows. The only modern classic show I'll allow for is perhaps Wings. But that is the only decent show they have aired in recent years, and its not even on there anymore.

Three's Company is also classic. But now, a majority of their programming are ho-hum diddies- some had high ratings some didn't, but they arent classic tv.

I was mostly just saying with my experience. I couldn't stand those shows back then (with the exception of "Dick Van Dyke"). Now I like those shows N@N showed in the early 90's. However, I remember thinking to myself how bad N@N had gotten back then.

Just so you don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing the shows themselves, rather than the schedule N@N had. To go from "Car 54" and "Make Room for Daddy" and "My Three Sons" to "F Troop", "The Partridge Family" and "Dragnet" just upset me back in those days. Of course I had no idea what would eventually take over N@N's schedule.

I also agree with you on "Wings". That's the only show I got excited about in the past few years. So naturally it got low ratings and treated like crap.

Yeah, the schedule was funny.
Although I was only 12 when I started watching, so I didnt know much about Nick@Nite let alone cable.

I started in 1991, and I loved Mister Ed and Patty Duke show and Dick Van Dyke. I was also excited when Mary Tyler Moore came on.

But around the mid 90s I just got fed up with it. I didnt see the old shows I liked, and MTM stopped around 98 or so. Mister Ed went off the air in 97, and there was no TVLAND then.

I do watch TVLAND more, because its kind of like the older Nicke@Nite used to be, although not quite as good.

I enjoyed Nick@Nite because it was unique programming. I like older shows and older movies. So it was neat to watch.

I hope that maybe this is just a phase they're going through. One show I would like to see on Nick@Nite is Mama's Family. That is the most underrated sit com ever.

I remember the exact turning point when N@N began its journey away from the Classic Oldies. It was when they first launched "Facts of Life" in the late '90s. This opened the '80s-and-beyond floodgates, and it's been down hill ever since. At the rate they're going, they'll be playing only shows that are a few years old. Of course TV Land is right behind them with all their hand-me-downs. And don't even get me started on TV Land's "reality" shows they're trying to promote. :( :( :(

I believe it was July 1, 1985. All the original N@N shows were listed as starting on that date, so I'm assuming that was the beginning of the channel. Nickelodeon, however came earlier. I'm just not sure when.
