gypsygem81 03-20-2005, 03:45 PM hi everyone
I have a friend coming down to stay with me over the weekend and I'm determined to make her watch Moonlighting cause I know she'll love it. So what I want to know is - what episode(s) do you think I should show her to start her off and make her beg for more?! I was thinking of the pilot, but maybe that's too long for a newbie?

Dutchie 03-21-2005, 08:33 AM What about My Fair David? I, for one, loved that episode! It's funny :D
CindyK 03-21-2005, 01:46 PM To understand the Moonlighting story overall, you really need to see the Pilot...and I think a couple of the first season episodes to establish the "we need clients" vibe of their business at the start. Both The Next Murder You Hear and The Murder's in the Mail are good choices for this. To show what is so totally magical about D&M's chemistry and developing relationship...."Money Talks...Maddie Walks" and "The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice" are good choices too. Don't even try the third season Sam episodes or Big Man or Atomic Shakespeare until you have indoctrinated someone into just what the premise of the whole thing is.
That would be my recommendation.
And if you only can show 1, one hour episode well, go with The Next Murder You Hear first. I think from it a person can learn the basis of the series.
gypsygem81 03-21-2005, 02:00 PM Thanks both. Great suggestions. I think I will try and get her to watch the pilot first. I'll tell her she can't have any cheese and potato pie until she's seen it. The Next Murder You Hear, Murders in the Mail and My Fair David are really good choices. I think they all have a really good mixture of all the things that makes it a great show. If that doesn't hook her nothing will. Or I'll do the cheese pie thing til she says she loves it.
Thanks guys!

I have a friend who watched the Pilot, but she thought it was a bit boring (What the? ). That's why I suggested My Fair David, but "The Next Murder You Hear" and "Murders in the Mail" are great episodes as well. Like you said, it's a good mixture of all the things that makes ML a great show. :)
Oh and what about Portrait of Maddie? That epi got me hooked on ML :D

Yeah, well I showed the Pilot to another friend and I don't think she was that impressed either. Portrait of Maddie is good too, but not one of my faves. And I think I only have that one on my computer, not on my video. I think I shall watch My Fair David again now to remind me. Cheers Steph!

Tazmania 03-21-2005, 04:39 PM You can also try In God we Strongly Suspect, you can see very well the difference there between Maddie and David and also (espacially at the end) the attraction!
Plus it has a good mystery plot...
Maybe not so boring??
(allthough in my opinion ML is never boring!) ;-)

gypsygem81 03-21-2005, 04:47 PM oh yeah, that's the one where they babysit the corpse yeah? I had forgotten about that one. What happends at the end? I can't remember now, I think I've only seen that one once. Another one I'll have to rewatch. Do I have the right one? It's Maddie's birthday and she doesn't like it, right?

Tazmania 03-22-2005, 02:14 PM Right!
It's a great episode. The bodywatch is very funny and at the end he's telling her that he prayed for her. It's sooooo sweet!
It's romantic and at the same time they get to know eachother on a whole other level.
Watch it! It's a good one!

gypsygem81 03-22-2005, 03:27 PM oh yeah, I remember that bit now. Cute! I think I will watch it after Eastenders. Thanks Taz!

I'm also a big proponent of seeing it from the very beginning to appreciate how the relationship developed. I love the pilot but even Bruce Willis admitted in the DVD commentary that he didn't really find the character until "The Next Murder You Hear". I think it's true of most shows. Still, I think you need to watch the progression of this relationship from the beginning to fully appreciate its deterioration towards the end.
CindyK 03-23-2005, 02:36 PM So gypsygem....what did you decide to show her? And please let us know her reactions. We love hearing this stuff.
gypsygem81 03-23-2005, 03:13 PM She's coming round tomorrow. I've already warned her though, and she seems happy to give it a go. She's a really big X-Files fan too, so I think ML should be up her street. She's only ever seen once episode and that was a Burt and Agnes one! So not a great start. I'm thinking I might start with the pilot after all, and see what she things of that.
I shall keep you updated!

CindyK 03-23-2005, 05:54 PM Sounds like a plan. However, do express to her that The Pilot is important to see to establish the premise of the series...but it is not necessarily the best episode. In fact, compared to all the other episodes it is only slightly above average I would think.
kismet 03-23-2005, 05:55 PM I think The Next Murder You Hear is a good one (but I still think the Pilot with maybe David and Maddie scenes ONLY is where to start if you think it is boring. I don't think it's boring at all by the way).
In The Next Murder You Hear, you see David's feelings towards Maddie, and you hear many great lines, like "I said bite, not eat".
I agree with Cindy's choices.
My Fair David is a great choice but i don't think so to try to hook a newbie with it.
i'd say the pilot movie, The Next Murder You Hear, Money Talks, Madde Walks. those shoud have done the trick.
gypsygem81 03-28-2005, 10:42 AM Hi all - hope everyone had a great Easter.
I know you will all be on the edge of your seats and waiting in anticipation to find out the outcome of my friends' visit!! We didn't have that much time for a big ML marathon - I thought we would have time before we went away, but didn't. So when we got back yesterday we watched two - First we watched The Next Murder You Hear and then My Fair David (thanks again everyone for your advice) I decided to stick to earlier episodes as she didn't know anything about the series.
Well, we got off to a shaky start when she fell asleep during The Next Murder You Hear. But I didn't let that throw me and put it down to the fact that she had just had three hours in the car with my erratic driving. My Fair David faired a little better. She managed to stay awake for the whole thing, perhaps because I used the old cheese and potato pie threat if she nodded off again. She liked that one and laughed at a lot of the banter and talking at the same time stuff.
Final verdict was - she certainly didn't hate it, but I think I will have a big job on my hands if I want to convert her. I'm certain she'd thank me for it in the end. She's coming down at the end of the week and we're going to see a Blondie tribute band (!!!) so I might give it another go then. My father has promised to come round this afternoon and fit my dvd writer, so if I can figure out how to use that, I shall burn some of the episodes I have on my computer onto dvd to watch. However, that's a rather large if.
And I'm rambling now, which probably means I've said more than enough!

Dutchie 03-28-2005, 10:50 AM Great to hear that she liked it, even when she was tired!
So can we expect her to come to the ML board in a not too distand future? :p
gypsygem81 03-28-2005, 10:56 AM hahaha, well I wouldn't put money on that at the moment. But I shall keep you all informed of her progress. :)
