Okay, in regards to todays show about Claudia (last name?) who killed a young girl while drinking and driving: I cant believe she has not been caught after all these years?? Her photos were pretty clear and she has red hair and green eyes. (pretty specific details). How can she hide out for so long? I wonder if they just havent done an update on this? I am also wondering if it is the familys repsonsibility to report updates to UM or if there is someone working for UM who does checks on a regular basis (and if so, i sure wish I had their search software)!!

Yes, I agree thats one of the cases that should have been easily solved. I did find an article about her and as of the date of this two years ago, she still hadn't been caught.

Cystaldawn, you beat me to the punch on that article.

By the way, Crushed Velvet, the drunk driver's name is Gloria Schulze.

This woman killed a young college student named Angela Maher. Gloria never spent a day in jail. I think she had a prominent lawyer representing her, so she got off easy. She needs to pay the price for what she did.

Every once in a while, there is some case that HAS in fact been solved, but never updated on the show.

I may be mistaken, but I remember hearing from a few people here that some man was charged with burning down Mable Wood's dog kettle (and killing 59 dogs) in 1986 - but there was never any update about featured. If that did happen, it would have been nice to know.

She didn't get off (easy or otherwise). In fact, she was convicted of the crime, but she fled before she could be incarcerated. That's what happens when a defendant is released on bail, and allowed to roam freely.

If she were charged with a capital murder, she would never have been released on bail, because suspects facing a possible death sentence are typically considered flight risks.

I remember when Edward Harold Bell shot and killed Larry Dickens, and would have killed a police officer had his rifle not jammed. That man was actually RELEASED on bail, then her promptly fled to Panama and became a rich business man for 15 years before he was caught.

I can't understand our legal system sometimes. How can an obvious murderer, and an obvious drunk driver, like Gloria Schultz, be allowed out of jail? Even more shocking, how can they be released AFTER their conviction, while awaiting sentencing? The same thing happened with Adam and Elena Emery--convicted of murder, then allowed to go free and "jump to their deaths" or, fake his death and get away--either way, no punishment is served. Or what about Ira Einhorn? Holly Maddux's body was found in HIS CLOSET, and yet he was allowed to go free, pending trial, of course. And did he show up? Of course not.

I think that if you are accused of a horrific crime--or convicted of one--you should not be allowed anywhere BUT prison. What did they think Gloria Schultz would do? She was a convicted felon facing years in prison, and she was allowed out of jail? Why? For what? Did anyone actually think she would show back up for sentencing?

This isn't directly UM related, but how many times have we seen a story with similar circumstances? It makes me sick sometimes.

Don't forget the case of Frederick Russell (who was profiled on UM in 2002). He was the Oregon college student whose drunk driving killed three people and injured some others. He was let out on bail, and allowed to attend classes while awaiting trial. Then, one day, claiming that he feared for his life, he fled. And he's been on the run for nearly four years.

i guess it could also be a space preblem. there just doesnt seem to be enough space to keep convicted criminals and criminals that are about to be convicted. i guess. im not too sure how the justice system works.

Don't always be too sure that jail space is a factor. However, if you ask radio talk show host Michael Savage, it is probable that he will give you one word to explain why such deadly drunk drivers are released on bail: liberalism!

Thanks for the correction, Kane. I can recall the most mundane details about stuff yet names wont stick!! **Drunk drivers are murderers and should be treated as such!!**

I would love to know if there was some resolution in this case as well. As for the drunk driver, I just watched her case on Mystery TV here in Canada and can't believe that she hasn't been caught yet.

Well, I love how people here are arguing about bail now. Hmm, if I remember right bail is something that was guarenteed in a little thing called THE CONSTITUTION! Actually, while bail is not guarenteed in all cases by the constitution, the 8th amendment deals almost entirely with making sure bail is "not excessive". The reason is of course because certain judges have a tendency to abuse their power. However the 8th amendment did not specify which offenses should be bail eligible and which should not. Just that if bail were set that it should not be excessive.

Now, the reason why we have bail is a little thing called innocent until proven guilty. I know how much some people here just foam at the mouth at the thought of bail of any kind being granted to any criminal defendant. But it is innocent until proven guilty in this country. Sorry folks that was the name of the game and I like to believe it still is even though I have my doubts.

Now, this drunk driver was not convicted. Her bail was set unusually low for a dui manslaughter case. The drunk driver had a prominent attorney that handled these kinds of cases and handled them well. This lawyer was able to convince the judge that his client wasnt a risk of flight and the bail was reduced substantially. Now in this case the person fled. A majority of the time criminal defendants out on bond do not flee. However some here twist facts to fit their theories and mislead people. I am setting the record straight.

I myself was arrested for dui. I was released the same night on no bail. Period. Some can rip on me if they want. However I spent a few hours in jail and I was then released on my own recognizence. I went to court, I pled guilty, I paid my fine and served my punishment. It was a mistake I learned a lot from. I'm mainly glad no one else or myself was hurt in the process.

In most states, bail is guarenteed for most crimes except usually first degree murder. Now bail can be set for that crime but a judge can deny it and it wouldnt be illegal. But like I said, in most states bail must be set for a criminal offense as long as the offense isnt first degree murder. In the case of Edward Harold Bell, he wasnt charged with Capital murder. He was charged with "murder" which under Texas law would be the equivelant of 2nd degree murder in most states.

Texas has an odd system, the first degree murder is split into Capital murder or aggravated murder where there arent enough aggravating factors to warrant the death penalty so even if convicted the most a defendant can get is life in prison. Under "murder", a defendant can get anywhere from 10 to 99 years. Since Edward Harold Bell was charge with "murder" but not "capital murder" he was under Texas law guarenteed bail would be set. After two months in jail the bail level was either reduced or he had acquired enough funds to make bond and he was released.

On the Adam Emory case, yes he was out on bond for 2nd degree murder, yes he was convicted. At that time in several states it wasnt uncommon for there to be appeal bond. As a matter of fact, this case wasnt even an appeal bond, this case was a rare example of a judge letting a defendant stay out on bond pending sentencing after being convicted of murder. Almost never does a judge allow bond to continue after a murder conviction until sentencing. So if you want to blame someone, blame the judge. The judge had the power to revoke the bond once Emory was convicted.

The appeal bond, up until the late 1980's, early 1990's many states allowed appeal bond for murder convictions. However most states have now banned appeal bond for first degree murder convictions since defendants have a tendency to flee when their appeals run out and they have to report to prison. Again, just setting the record straight folks.

By the way, on this drunk driving thing, Gloria Schulze was never convicted, at least not with Schulze in attendance. Schulze fled shortly before her trial was due to get underway. Now she most likely would have been convicted and was under Arizona law looking at 10 years in prison.

So yes Schulze had plenty of opportunity to flee. However granting her bail was the right thing to do. No one knew she would flee. She was supposed to wear a monitoring device and she was supposed to check in with the court. Now she shouldnt have been granted lower bail than normal for this type of offense but it wasnt like she was convicted and the judge allowed her to stay out either.

Also, if you want to blame someone, blame the prosecutors in this case! They bungled the case from the start! Specificially Deputy Maricopa County Attorney Michelle O'Hair-Schattenberg and her supervisor Assistant Maricopa County Attorney Terry Jennings. O'Hair-Schattenberg had a history of bungling cases and in fact in 1988 had another DUI manslaughter case thrown out of court because she had bungled it.

Angela Maher's mother later found out about O'Hair-Schattenberg and her incompetence and actually asked that she be removed from the case and another prosecutor was assigned. O'Hair-Schattenberg later became a Tempe City Judge.

Gloria Schulze wasnt even arrested the night of the accident. Why? Well the cops wanted to arrest her but they didnt. You know why? Because it was up to the on call prosecutor that night who happened to be Michelle O'Hair-Schattenberg and the prosecutor opted not to have Schulze arrested. It was 10 days before Schulze was even charged.

Schulze was represented by prominent Phoenix DUI attorney Larry Kazan. Kazan has a long record of getting DUI defendants "off the hook" or getting them plea deals and reduced sentences. Also, the person that allowed Schulze to travel out of state was the prosecutor who granted Schulze permission on at least two seperate occassions to travel to California to visit her relatives.

Also, look at the judge! Maricopa County, Arizona Superior Court Judge Michael Ryan was the one that opted to release Schulze without bond. This was done mainly because when the grand jury indicted Schulze they issued a summons for her to appear in court rather than having a warrant issued for her arrest.

The case also changed hands from Judge Ryan to Judge Barbara Jarrett and later Judge Linda Scott. Schulze's attorney sought post ponments in the trial 6 times and each time it was granted without objection from the prosecutors. In fact the prosecutors agreed it should be post poned.

When a new prosecutor was put on the case, his name was Mitch Rand. Rand did his job. Rand objected to Schulze's trips but he was overruled. However Rand and the trial judge both were unaware that Schulze actually had missed 5 scheduled drug tests in a row. This means that Schulze actually could have been missing as long as two weeks before the authorities discovered she was missing.

So, if you want to blame someone for S chulze going on the run, blame the prosecutors and judges. The bail system wasnt the problem here. Might want to get our facts straight in the future before we go spouting off. Hopefully Schulze is caught and gets punished for what she did. She was tried in abstentia and convicted and she needs to do her time. I am pretty sure her family is helping her hide but that is just my opinion. The Schulze family has claimed Rose Maher had Gloria Schulze killed.

You can thank Senator Arlen Specter for that. He was looking to make a name for himself and got Einhorn free two days before his trial. Then Einhorn fled the country and it took twenty years to get him back. And later that year, Specter went on to be elected to the U.S. Senate. What a scumbag.

I found all the articles in the world about this lady, but not one picture and she's a wanted murderer! Does anyone have a picture or know where I can see one? I'm wanting to refresh my memory of this case and this woman.

Thanks in advance!

Her photo and the case is in the the "wanted" section of unsolved.com. You can browse under the Wanted tab or search for Gloria Schluze (or Schulze, UM spells it both ways).

They say that she's still hasn't been caught since going on the run way back in 1995. It's such a sickening situation... She killed a beautiful young woman while driving under the influence of marijuana and had a blood alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit, at 0.15. So not only was she drunk driving, but also under the influence of illegal drugs!

IMO, there shouldn't have been bail in this case, but I don't know what the laws are/were. It just seems to me that common sense should prevail in this situation: drunk and drugged driving led to the death of a completely innocent person.

If this killer is still alive, she's now 48 years old.

She was the one that was out on bail and then when she pled guilty, went on the run before sentencing right? I want to say this is the one out of Maricopa County, Arizona although I don't remember all the exact details but I think that is the same case? There was some controversy over the bail, not that bail was set but I think that it was low and that she had violated the conditions of her bond and stuff and the level of bail was not raised and then after she pled guilty she was allowed to remain until sentencing, which in a case like this is not unusual, but it depends on the state and on the judge and plus these days we have GPS tracking.

Also, the first judge assigned to this case, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Michael Ryan, went on to be appointed to the Arizona Supreme Court in 2002. He retired from the bench earlier this month.

Judge Barbara Jarrett who was the second judge assigned to this case retired from the bench in 2005. The judge that was assigned to this case at the time Gloria went on the run, Judge Linda Scott is still on the bench in Maricopa County, Arizona Superior Court although she is no longer handling adult criminal cases but is in the juvenile court division. The original prosecutor Michelle O'Hair-Schattenberg is a Tempe Municipal Court Judge. Her boss, Terry Jennings still works for the Maricopa County Attorney's Office where he has worked for 34 years. The prosecutor at the time of the case, Mitch Rand, also is still with the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. Larry Kazan who represented Gloria, still is a prominent DUI defense attorney in the Phoenix area and is still making the big bucks to do it.

Just saw this segment today. How has this woman not been caught by now? It's not like she is some slick criminal. She's a drunk driver for gods sake. Shouldn't be hard to track her down after all this time. We've seen other cases where much more savy criminals are tracked down. I'm wondering if she's been caught and it just hasn't been updated.

Kadrmas, where did you hear the rumor that the Maher family had Gloria Schulze killed??

Kadrmas is no longer a member of the board.

The latest info I could find about her was in 2007 and she still hadn't been caught.

This also was updated on Americas Most Wanted last night. They think she could be in Arizona or any mountain region :/ loves wolf dogs and is a vegan, lol. She looks sooo much like this lady who comes to the store I work in. Even the hippie rough look they describe. But why would she be in the south? LOL. My husband tells me to quit trying to solve a mystery!

Why in the world is this woman bothering with veganism?

With her excessive alcohol intake, she's obviously not doing it for health reasons, and with her penchant for killing innocents, she's not doing it to keep animals from being slaughtered.
