View Full Version : The Ford Picture Thread
Steve M. 03-12-2005, 04:18 PM In the spirit of the Volkswagen thread I started, I'd like to start a thread of pictures of Fords.
And to make it interesting, why don't we post pictures of both North American and European Fords, alternating between the two? :)
Here's a picture of a 1966 Ford Mustang to start!

Steve M. 03-12-2005, 04:22 PM Ford of Europe's equvialent to the Mustang was the Ford Capri!
http://www.brooklands280.com/images/Capri8new.jpg
It was sold here in the seventies by Lincoln-Mercury dealers!
Janice 03-12-2005, 04:22 PM President Gerald Ford
Janice 03-12-2005, 04:22 PM Wait....oh I see. Never mind.
Steve M. 03-12-2005, 04:23 PM He's a Ford, not a Lincoln!
Anyway, here's a 1965 Ford Falcon!
http://classiccars.kfunk.net/ford/65ford_falcon.jpg
Steve M. 03-12-2005, 04:34 PM Now back to Europe for. . .the Ford Cortina!
http://www.e-renova.net/coches-usados/coches/Ford/Ford_Cortina_1_g.jpg
The Cortina went through several restylings and was offered in a variety of models. It was even briefly sold in America. This one is a convertible. :)
Fleet 03-12-2005, 05:47 PM This is a 1966 Ford Fairlane at a car show.
390-4 bbl engine rated at 335 horsepower. Even with mild rear end gearing, these cars could run 7-second 0-60 mph times and a 1/4 mile of 15 seconds at 92 mph.
One of my car friends had one of these. He would burn rubber in it often. :D I even have some pics of him doing that.
Fleet 03-12-2005, 06:07 PM Here is my friend's '66 Fairlane I mentioned. :D
Belair 03-12-2005, 07:50 PM Well I've been told that Fords aren't good cars.

I would agree that the G.M. and Chrysler products were more reliable. (I'm talking about the '60s and '70s.)
There were some Fords that had a pretty good repair record like the Maverick and the Falcon.
Steve M. 03-16-2005, 08:53 PM Here's a Ford Pinto!
http://www.riekmann.prohosting.com/magazin/die_schlechtesten_autos/ford_pinto.jpg
Despite its bad reputation for being dangerous due to having its gas tank right behind the rear bumper, the Pinto ended up being the only commercially successful small car to come of out Detroit during the seventies. Go figure. :o
Steve M. 03-16-2005, 09:03 PM From Ford of Europe, there was the Fiesta.
http://www.forddesktops.com/desktops/fiesta/Ford_Fiesta_Mk1_3.jpg
Introduced in Europe in the late seventies, the Fiesta was briefly sold in North America for three seasons (1978 through 1980). As you can tell, this is a 1980 model.
The Fiesta remains a popular car in the Old Country after several redesigns, but it's no longer sold here in the U.S. and Canada. Pity. :(
Steve M. 03-16-2005, 09:18 PM Here's a 1989 Ford Taurus.
http://a332.g.akamai.net/f/332/936/12h/www.edmunds.com/media/generations/taurus.sable/89.ford.taurus.f3-4.350.jpg
Its European looks actually became popular with Middle America, and it was the benchmark of midsize sedans for many years.
Steve M. 03-16-2005, 09:24 PM While Americans and Canadians got the Taurus, Europeans got the Ford Sierra. It came as a hatchback coupe, a hatchback sedan (pictured) and a wagon.
http://ford.hut.ru/Sierra/Intro/1/sierra_p.jpg
Unlike the front-drive Taurus in North America, the Sierra was a rear-wheel-drive car. It too was a popular midsize vehicle.
D-Dey 03-16-2005, 09:56 PM Here's a 1962 Ford Capri from England.
Fleet 03-16-2005, 10:17 PM Here's a Ford Pinto!
Despite its bad reputation for being dangerous due to having its gas tank right behind the rear bumper, the Pinto ended up being the only commercially successful small car to come of out Detroit during the seventies. Go figure. :o
I'd rather forget about those, thank you.
Really sad what happened in the mid-'70s. Went from muscle car engines to wimp engines. I bet the street racers were in shock. One of my high school friends was a street racer- had a '67 Mustang with a built 351-Cleveland engine and 4.11 gears. Car ran about 13.0 seconds in the 1/4 mile. I can imagine him trying to race with a Pinto! :D
D-Dey 03-17-2005, 02:24 PM Believe it or not, this is a Ford too. A Ford Pygmy.

Steve M. 03-17-2005, 02:54 PM Okay, I think we can count those jeeps as North American Fords! So back to the Eurofords! :D
The hottest Ford Sierra was the XR4i coupe.
http://members.aol.com/XR4i160902/xr4.jpg
With its distinctive gullwing, the XR4i certainly looked different. A turbocharged version was briefly sold here in North America by Lincoln-Mercury dealers. Here it was called the Merkur XR4Ti (Merkur being German for Mercury, as it was built at Ford's Cologne, Germany, plant). Despite - or maybe because of - its distincitve looks and performance, it didn't quite catch on here.
Steve M. 03-17-2005, 03:03 PM Two North American Fords means two Eurofords! Here's a Sierra notchback sedan! It's an RS model. :)
http://www.fantasycars.com/sedans/misc/ford_sierrars.jpg
Fleet 03-17-2005, 05:06 PM Here are two views of a 1968 Ford XL
Wow. Now that is a real car! Look at the styling and the muscular look.
Thanks for posting that. Note all of the chrome on that '68- something which is pathetically lacking on today's cars. And an actual trunk- not just a "bump" at the rear of the car. That '68 Ford I would love to have; those other two you posted (Sierra)... no thanks! Big engines and tons of horspower are my requirements.
Steve M. 03-17-2005, 09:01 PM You want a big engine with lotsa horsepower? You're gonna get it, because now we return to Dearborn for a North American Ford!
Here's a 1963 Galaxie 500 convertible! :)
http://www.1motormart.com/gallery/63ford01.jpg
Steve M. 03-17-2005, 09:18 PM And now, back to the Old Country. :)
In the seventies, Ford of Europe's biggest car was the Granada. It had nothing to do with the American Ford of the same name; this Granada had more rounded contours. This Granada 3000 GXL is a 1972 model.
http://granada.lostinlove.dk/img/1972_ford_granada_3000_gxl.jpg
Steve M. 03-17-2005, 10:21 PM And back to Europe - for a Granada limo! :D

liar
Steve M. 03-17-2005, 10:42 PM liar
Well, that was what I'd been led to understand.
Anyway. . . how about that Granada limosuine, huh? :D
Fleet 03-17-2005, 11:30 PM You want a big engine with lotsa horsepower? You're gonna get it, because now we return to Dearborn for a North American Ford!
Here's a 1963 Galaxie 500 convertible! :)
Yeah, that's a nice one. Look at the huge trunk!
Yes, give me big engines and lots of horsepower- leave the 80-horsepower econocars for 80-year-old grandmothers! Any cars I own must have the ability to burn rubber (one of my requirements). ;-)
And have at least around 300 horsepower.
Fleet 03-17-2005, 11:36 PM And back to Europe - for a Granada limo! :D
That's an unusual limo. In a way, it looks like the FWD Chrysler limos built from 1984-'86.
Steve M. 03-18-2005, 11:49 AM Yeah, that's a nice one. Look at the huge trunk!

Oh, there'll be plenty of pictures of Fords with big engines - you can count on that - but European Fords are a different kettle of fish. Ford's European lineup is geared more towards economy and compactness, given the Old Country's high gas prices and narrow city streets. And because they are Ford products, and because they too have their fans - I happen to love the old Ford Capri sold here in the seventies, and I can't be bothered with the fake Capris Lincoln-Mercury sold after 1978 - I can't ignore them. :)

But could Starsky and Hutch have handled this? :D

This hot little number is the Ford Fiesta XR2, a potent little pocket rocket that has scared many a GTI driver in Europe. This particular XR2 has an aftermarket makeover from Quad Conversions in England. Cool, huh?
Steve M. 03-18-2005, 04:18 PM Oh wait, I see what you did, Zebra, you moved it to the current page. Sorry about that.
Steve M. 03-18-2005, 04:33 PM I owe you a North American Ford. . . .

Well, since a '74 Gran Torino could be had with a huge 460 engine, and could run high-15 sec 1/4 miles, and could leave 80-foot stips of rubber on the road, I think that little 4-cyl. Fiesta wouldn't be much of a problem.
I wonder what the horsepower and 1/4 mile of that Fiesta is?
Steve M. 03-18-2005, 08:39 PM Well, since a '74 Gran Torino could be had with a huge 460 engine, and could run high-15 sec 1/4 miles, and could leave 80-foot stips of rubber on the road, I think that little 4-cyl. Fiesta wouldn't be much of a problem.

I'm not sure, but suffice it to say, I'll bet British and German Fiesta XR2 drivers are glad the Torino was never sold in thier countries!
Steve M. 03-18-2005, 09:14 PM For the 1981 model year, Ford introduced a "world car. . ." the Escort.
http://www.austinev.org/evalbum/383a.jpg
Designed to meet North American, European, and Asian specifications, the Escort was made and sold all over the world, qualifying it as both a North American and European Ford. The Escort above is a 1981 U.S. model (converted to electric power?!). :)
In America, Escorts came as three-door and five-door hatchback sedans and five door wagons, as well as a hot GT model. European Escorts had all these models plus a convertible, and its sport model was dubbed the XR3i.
Steve M. 03-18-2005, 09:23 PM The Escort replaced the Pinto in Ford's North American lineup. (Lincoln-Mercury dealers got a Mercury version, called the Lynx.) In Europe, the Escort replaced a different subcomapct, also called the Escort. The original Euopean Escort from the seventies is shown below.
http://www.forddesktops.com/desktops/escort/Ford_Escort_5.jpg
Is it just me, or is there a slight family resemblance in styling to its distant American cousin, the Pinto?
The original European Escort has its fans, but it couldn't really compete with VW's Golf (then called the Rabbit here).
Steve M. 03-18-2005, 09:30 PM I happen to like these little Fords, American and European, and I'm ticked off that we didn't get some of these cars in North America, but to be fair, several larger, more powerful American Fords have their pluses. Like, say, a 1970 Ford Mustang with a Boss 302 engine!
http://www.musclecar-logbook.net/FORD/1970_Boss_302__0110.jpg
Can you dig it?
Fleet 03-19-2005, 01:30 AM I'm not sure, but suffice it to say, I'll bet British and German Fiesta XR2 drivers are glad the Torino was never sold in thier countries!
Why? Unless you mean they wouldn't want a 4,000-lb full-sized car smashing into their 2,300-lb subcompact. By accident, of course; not on purpose. :D

Yeah, give me the larger, (much) more powerful American Fords anyday! I thrive on horsepower. Those classic cars muscle cars sure had style! That Mustang looks nice. Mint examples are selling for big bucks- I've seen $30,000+ listed in ads. And they only cost about $4,000 or less when new.

Here's a big Euroford - the flagship Scorpio model! :)

Replacing the Granada, the Scorpio debuted in the Old Country in the mid-eighties. This is a 1995 model.
Only one Scorpio made it here - the ugly first-generation hatchback sedan! :barf:
Steve M. 03-19-2005, 03:25 PM Alright, two North American Fords to one European Ford - we need another Euroford to even things up! :D
Here's another Fiesta XR2 - this is what it looks like without an AMG-style treatment!

No comparison between that 390 Mustang and the funny-looking, shoebox-type Fiesta posted two pics below the Mustang.
Reminds me of a funny slogan someone posted on a car-type message board... "Now let me get this straight- your Honda has 1.6 liters whereas my bottle of Mountain Dew has 2 liters?"

Steve M. 03-19-2005, 09:43 PM Now here's a real blast from the past!
Here's the car that started it all - the Model T!
http://www.musclecarclub.com/other-cars/classic/ford-model-t/images/ford-model-t-1a.jpg
Produced from 1908 to 1927, the Model T became the archetype of mass-production automobiles. Henry Ford cranked out 15,007,033 of these babies before retiring it due to intense competition from his chief rival, GM's Chevrolet division. The Model T remained the the most produced automobile in history until Volkswagen's Beetle surpassed its record in 1972.
The Model T could, of course, be ordered in any color you wanted - so long as it was black!
Steve M. 03-19-2005, 10:00 PM Ford of Europe first took root in Britain, where English versions of the American cars were produced in the twenties and thirties. Eventually, the Brits got their own model - the Ford Popular!
http://www.ford-vrohidis-hatzis.gr/graphics/old.gif
Monty Python fans may remember this car from the "Mr. and Mrs. Brian Norris's Ford Popular" sketch!
Zebra 3 03-19-2005, 10:56 PM Henry Ford cranked out 15,007,033 of these babies...To celebrate their 100 anniversary the Ford Motor Company hand-built six 2003 Model T-100s, which are exact replicas of the 1914 Model T. So for those keeping score, that makes a new Ford Motor Company Model T grand total of 15,007,039.

Yes, but the VW Beetle, which only ceased production in 2003, is still way ahead!
Fleet 03-19-2005, 11:27 PM Now here's a real blast from the past!
Here's the car that started it all - the Model T!
My parents owned a 1929 Model A Ford. And, get this, they drove it from California to New York (in 1947)!
I don't know if it was black (probably was).
Steve M. 03-20-2005, 04:21 PM The A was an indisputable classic. :)
Steve M. 03-20-2005, 04:25 PM Here it is, ladies and gents - the first car Henry Ford built, in his garage with his own two hands, in 1896 - the Ford quadricycle! :)

And there was no Mercury version!
D-Dey 03-21-2005, 11:55 AM If trucks can be included, here's a Ford that was made between 1957 & 1990. The C-Series Meduim Duty cabover. This one had to be made between 1974 and sometime in the mid-1980's.

Fleet 03-21-2005, 08:03 PM Back for a moment to the Ford Escort!
Why? :D
Steve M. 03-21-2005, 10:48 PM Why? Because it leads to my next car here. . . the Ford Orion! :D
http://www.fastsaloons.com/ourcars/marks/thumbs/ford_orion_1.6_ghia.jpg
The Ford Orion was an Escort with a trunk. Ford of Europe followed Vokswagen's lead by simply adding a trunk to an existing hatchback model. This Orion is a 1992 Ghia model.
Steve M. 03-21-2005, 10:56 PM We in the U.S. of A. didn't get an Orion, but we got something close - the Ford Tempo! This is a 1986 model.
http://www.tempotopaz.com/prod/modules/My_eGallery/gallery/gen1/86tristarrims.jpg
Based on a stretched Escort wheelbase, the Tempo was Ford's answer to American competition such as the Chevrolet Citation and the Dodge Aries. Unlike GM and Chrylser models, which were rather boxy, Ford's Tempo adopted the aerodynamic "jellybean" profile now common today, along with aircraft-inspired doors that fit into the roof. Pretty auspicious for a common family car!
The Tempo (and its more angular, conservative Mercury twin, the Topaz) debuted as a 1984 model and lasted for nearly a decade.
Steve M. 03-22-2005, 11:50 PM The Ford Falcon was FoMoCo's first compact in North America. Here's a 1964 model. :)
http://www.americandreamcars.com/64fordfalcon.jpg
It was a strong success in the sixties, its only serious competition coming from Chrysler's Dodge Dart.
Steve M. 03-22-2005, 11:57 PM Back to Europe - Britain, to be precise - for a 1962 Ford Classic!
http://y2u.co.uk/&002_Images/Ford_Classic/Ford_Classic_02.jpg
As noted, Paul McCartney had one before the Beatles made it big - it was his first new car, though I don't know the year. (Macca later got into Aston Martins and Minis.)
D-Dey 03-23-2005, 10:50 AM For EuroFords, I wanted to find the Tippex(as seen in "The Young Ones" episode "Boring"), but couldn't. So I'll have to settle for the Ford Transcontinental.

Fleet 03-25-2005, 12:49 AM And while we Americans were driving those chrome tanks, our British cousins had the Ford Anglia!

Fleet 03-25-2005, 12:51 AM And here's a 1957 Ford Fairlane Skyliner - with a retractable hardtop! (Note the proud owner next to the car.)
Very nice! If I owned it, I would be proudly standing by it, too.
Has a lot going for it- real metal, chrome, durable and a real engine (which the owner can actually service himself if he chooses to).
Steve M. 03-26-2005, 04:42 PM The Ford Model A (no Mercury version - sorry! ) was introduced in 1928, replacing the Model T.
http://www.classicsandmore.com/cars/30%20Ford%20Model%20A.JPG
It was as radical as the Model T had been two decades earlier, and much more mechanically sophisticated. A strong seller at first, it fell victim to the Great Depression and intense competition from GM's Chevrolet division (which was fast becoming the all-American car!).
Pictured above is a 1930 Model A two-door sedan. :)

These were actual production cars with a 427 high-riser rated at 425 horsepower but the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) factored the engines at 500 hp.
These cars could run low-12 second and even high-11 second 1/4 miles at around 125 mph!

Steve M. 06-19-2006, 11:16 AM And now for a Ford that the Vatican can sanctify.
As archbishop of Cracow, Cardinal Karol Wojtyla got around the area in a humble 1975 Ford Escort, which has nothing to do with the Escort sold here in the eighties. (American archbishops who needed cheap wheels then had to settle for a Pinto if they went to their Ford dealers. ) In 1978, Wojtyla became Pope John Paul II. Recently, his '75 Escort went for five million U.S. dollars at auction!
By contrast, the 1999 Volkswagen Golf that Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger owned before he became Pope Benedict XVI sold at auction for a mere $244,000, and it was in better condition. But then John Paul was "the people's Pope," while Benedict is "God's Rottweiler" and the "German shepherd."
So here's the late John Paul's '75 Escort.

Yup. Somewhere I have an unfinished drawing of what I think the Mercury Mountaineer would've looked like if it had been made since the 1960's. As you can probably guess, it would've been Bronco-based.

D-Dey 08-08-2007, 09:19 AM Not exactly revolutionary, IS it?
Other than adding Super-Duty pickup grilles, I suppose not. But at least they didn't uglify it the way they did with the Ford Taurus in 1996.
Mikado 08-08-2007, 02:18 PM Well, the 96 Taurus would certainly not be ugly to a catfish
Have you seen the 2008 Taurus? Pretty nice, if a bit chunky.....strangely, the front grille resembles the old Tempo, a lower priced car!
Fleet 08-08-2007, 06:25 PM Well, id rather have my car than an oversized
Oversized? They were only 197" long. My compact '66 Dodge Dart was 196.3" long.
gas-guzzling
That doesn't stop people from buying good examples for $15,000 or $20,000. Also, most are driven only once every one or two weeks, usually to car shows, so gas mileage doesn't matter. As the saying goes, "Gas mileage should not prevent you from driving what you really want to drive."
ugly
Ugly? Take another look at today's blob- or egg-shaped "cars," with those ridiculous bug-eyed headlights and the plastic bumpers and fenders and the lack of real chrome and whitewall tires.
piece of lousy-handling
Actually, they did quite well for normal handling and even non-ordinary handling. (One of my friends owned a '66 390 Fairlane.)
enviroment-destroying Detroit crap,
Lol. I'll be sure to repeat that comment to the cars guys I see every Friday night at the car gathering. :D A lot of them own 12- and 11- second cars (1/4 mile) which can blow away a lot of the European and Japanese crap.
And with the average '66 classic car being driven 2,000 miles or less per year, their contribution to "destroying the enviornment" is very, very little.
but, we all have our own tastes, right?
Right. I like cars when they looked like cars. Not the blobmobiles of today.
Fleet 08-08-2007, 06:31 PM A '66 Fairlane... a normal-looking car (and the 390 engine, with 427 lbs-ft torque doesn't hurt, either). :)
