I will of course just to see how he signs off. But nothing can compare to the class that Tom Brokaw signed off with.

This thread won't last long, but I would like to check it out. Despite his problems the last 6 months, he has been a journalist for a long time, and has seen alot in his time. It will be nice to see things that he has covered in the past, even if you don't like the man.

I can see it won't be many watchers on this board-lol But I read that viewers will see Clips of Dan never seen before

I remember when Dan took over for Walter Croncike in 81. I was only 7 but I still somewhat remember. My parents were watching it and I was in the room with them. At 7 years old who cares about the news? It seemed big because Walter Croncike stepped down. Also, it was good that Peter Jennings and Brian Williams had just gave Dan Rather a farewell shotout. Rival news rarely acknowledge one another but they do in this situation.

I can say I barely remember Cronkite, I was only like 5 or 6 when he stepped down. So Rather and Brokaw were really the only news anchors I remember. Now they are both gone. It's like part of my childhood died.

TJ was the real reason I got this GEM. If it wasn't for TJ provided me with a RARE tv show, i would have never had anything to offer to get Dan Rather's first CBS News Broadcast in 81. My Thanks to TJ!!!!!

Correct. March 6, 1981 was Walter Cronkite's last CBS NEWS show which I also have on Tape

You folks want it, you got it. Keep politics out of it.

I am not a fan or anything, but I don't understand why one thing destroys a 40+ career in some eyes. Rather was with CBS since before JFK's assassination, when the person who people hate him for was only about 15. Come on, Rather is a legend in his field, he's been doing his thing for over 40 years and people discredit and negate all 40 years because of one thing last year (not naming names to keep politics out of it). Rather's been at it for about 9 presidents, he deserves respect for longevity even if you dislike him because you support the president, because Rather was doing his thing since the president was a teenager, which means it's been a really long time.

Everyone makes mistakes, if Rather was a rookie, then by all means I understand, but he's been on CBS for so long that to hate him for that one reason alone doesn't make sense, because for one bad year, he's had so many good ones.

I agree completely. Even professionals make mistakes. No one is infallable, despite what they might think.

I hope Dan is still around for the 08 election. A presidential race is boring without Ratherisms. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I was surprised to read today that Dan Rather's last CBS broadcast finished number one in the news ratings. CBS is usually third. I guess everyone wanted to say goodbye.

More people watched the final newscast than the special.

Nightly News race on Wednesday:

CBS 7.2/13
NBC 6.5/12
ABC 6.3/11

A rerun of "Lost" won the 8 p.m. hour for ABC with a 7.9/12. FOX got a 6.3/10 from two episodes of "That '70s Show," finishing just ahead of Dan Rather's CBS send-off, "A Reporter Remembers." The first Wednesday airing of "American Dreams" posted a 4.6/7 for NBC, on par with the show's season average. "America's Next Top Model" earned a 3.4/5 for UPN. The WB went with a repeat of "Smallville."

Last night it was back to reality...

NBC 7.2/13
ABC 6.5/12
CBS 5.4/10

I'm surprised they did that well for his last broacast. I see they are back in a distant 3rd again. Maybe it wasn't all him for the poor ratings. Just weird cause CBS is the first place primetime network right?
