View Full Version : Here is why Jay Leno is the Late Night Leader
TVFactFan 03-08-2005, 12:47 AM Jay was told he could not talk about the Michael Jackson Trial since he is a witness so the last two shows he has brought two different guys to tell Michael Jackson Jokes.
Friday Night it was a supporting character from Everybody Loves Raymond telling the Jackson Jokes and Tonight it was Dennis Miller
JAY IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
barwars 03-09-2005, 10:24 PM David Letterman could kick Leno's ass any day of the week.
In front of and behind the desk.

If he can then why didn't he get the Tonight show gig?
Jay Leno is the MAN.........

It was all politics! I for one can't wait till Conan takes over the show.

Read/watch The Late Shift. Johnny wanted Dave. Johnny REALLY wanted Dave. He got screwed over thanks to backstage stuff, hence the move from the Midnight-thirty slot to opposite Jay the next year [making room for Conan, incidentally].
I think I've watched one full episode of Leno in the last ten years (the Carson tribute). Hadn't watched a full show before that, haven't since. Don't plan to watch another full episode of The Tonight Show until Conan takes over in '09.
I just hope Dave has the good sense to hang it up before Conan takes over. I love The Late Show, I do - but Dave and Conan share a LOT of the same audience: And forced into a choice between the two, I just don't see as many of that audience staying with Dave as opposed to Conan. Plus, when you factor in the built in Tonight Show fanbase....ugh.
HuntingtonM15 03-10-2005, 12:24 AM I prefer Jay
Mysty Eyes 03-25-2005, 02:40 AM I much prefer Jay Leno.
Letterman rarely makes me laugh. It's not the jokes; it's the delivery. Letterman simply is not funny to me.
Jay makes me laugh quite easily. There is something very friendly and jovial about his demeanor, and I find that I want to laugh with him.
It's all a matter of preference... of delivery style and of personality.

Plus Jay always tell jokes without SMILING which is always the best kind of Comedy
Brian 03-25-2005, 01:44 PM Jay has the best monologue but I think Letterman is the much better interviewer.

Why is David the better interviewer?

I think that is the important point, and it is why Jay was better suited to take over The Tonight Show than Dave was. Don't get me wrong, I like Letterman, but he was and pretty much still is, too abrasive and more "garage-band" style when the Tonight Show needed a more polished and sophisticated style wit and delivery to carry on Carson's type of Tonight Show.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 03-27-2005, 03:27 AM Jay Leno isn't funny at all, IMO. I only watch him to see Headlines or if some guest I like is on. I don't watch Letterman AT ALL.
As for Conan, he's the funniest man that ever existed IMO!

Why is Conan so funny? Because he jumps arounds like a idiot
snl75 03-27-2005, 05:58 PM im not going to start an aurgment about whos better at what they all have gher good points except carson daly but thas another story. but i just dont jay is as good as he used to be and hasant been for about 2 or 3 years now i cant put my finger on it but it seemes that whatever edge he used to have is gone its like he and his writers have dumbed themselves and the show down .but i will say this as much as i like conan hes really going to hhave to tone down some of his raicer stuff when he takes over for jay in 09. or he will lose quite a bit of his audience the religous stuff has got to go. i mean even i dont like that type of humour and i like almost all types of comedy but i dont like that humour at all and im pretty sure the tonight show,s core audience wont like it ether and ther are a few other things that while i and most of conan's audience arent offended the tonight show viewers might find hard to take. sorry if i got a little off topic on your therad solomon but i was just thinking about all these things at once and they just came out.

He has seemed to have "lost something" lately. He regularly does standup here in Los Angeles in order to keep up on his timing, etc. But... I dunno... Remember when he was so uncomfortable telling jokes right after September 11? People had to convince him to go ahead with his show; that the public needed some diversion. Maybe that's when he began to lose that "edge."

I can't get past Conan's hyperness. He is much too frenetic for me. Once Jay is gone, I am gone.
:yippee:

Zebra 3 06-18-2005, 03:50 PM It was all politics! I for one can't wait till Conan takes over the show.Indeed, the sooner lame-o Leno leaves the better.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 06-19-2005, 12:13 AM Why is Conan so funny? Because he jumps arounds like a idiot
he just does really funny stuff on the show. I LOVE sarcasm and blunt humor like he does (self depricating). Jay Leno's humor is more goofy and I don't like that.
CliffClavin 06-20-2005, 01:13 PM I watch all of the shows so...
dlemond 06-20-2005, 01:42 PM For the uneducated here is the deal.
Conan is sharp- nails the improv joke like Letterman used to, but in his own way. Self-depricating and smart. Real smart.
Letterman is a bit crotchety but still is on the ball. I can see Letterman being a little tired at times, but still he does sarcasm better than anyone.
Leno- very amiable. very likable. But a kissass and generally not very funny. WHY>WHY>WHY does he belabor his jokes at the end, "... you know cause the road is slippery, it's very wet out there". On and on after the joke, annoying.
We can figure out the punchline Jay.
Carson Daly- there is a guy at your bus stop more suited for TV than this clown.

I like how Jay immediately goes to the next joke when no one laughs at his current joke-lol
David Letterman is better. I find him much more clever and less juvenile than Leno. Dave was HILARIOUS during the Nicole Kidman interview! I laughed my ass off when (out of the blue) he mentioned Tom and Katie! You should have seen the look on her face! Then when he kept bringing up Russell Crowe getting arrested! HAHA!
I couldn’t see Leno doing that stuff.
DAVE RULES!

Sorry, had a minor...no, major spasm there. I'm all good now. :)
McFly121 07-03-2005, 02:00 AM Yeah, I don't get into the heated crap that's on google where people flame each other on the Jay vs. Dave garbage.
Easily put, I live for Jay's monologue. My 15 minutes of appointment tv a day. Sure its hit and miss, but I love looking forward to 11:35 knowing I'm gonna laugh for a while at the monologue and his comedy bit. I don't watch the interviews because, whether he's good at it or not, it's just boring to listen to some star talk about their hobbies or how they broke a nail. Yawn. A big star maybe.
I'll watch Letterman when Jay's on reruns. I don't like how Dave tells 3 jokes and sits down. Then turns on that inane street camera to watch a bunch of tourists eyes dart around and giggle through a bunch of "where are you from" stuff. And God lately he hasn't left Rupert Jee alone. But Dave's video riffs on Bush or Larry King are funny, and they fortunately air when Jay goes to commercial.
Mikado 07-11-2005, 01:52 AM Jay sucks...he was better when Dave fed him straight lines...and, his BIG schtick "Headlines", is just a ripoff of Dave's Small town news
SBTB Geek 07-11-2005, 03:13 AM Conan is a Red headed Ugly Goofball
...and that's why I like him.
