It is about a family who must deal with each of their problems, among the fact that they all have different personalities and methods of dealing with things. The family consists of a set of parents, needy four kids, a wayward nephew, and an infant granddaughter. The eight of them live in one two-store (plus basement) home in Trenton, New Jersey. Woody Harrelson and Heather Locklear star as Scott and Karen Sheridan, both 41 years old. Scott works as a car dealer, as Karen works as a department store manager. Scott and Karen's four children are Larissa, 19 (Olivia Wilde), Erica, 17 (Hayden Panettiere), Kevin, 16 (Griffen Frazen), and Jake, 14 (Jacob Smith). Erica is a high school junior, Kevin is a high school sophomore, and Jake is a high school freshman. Larissa is a high school graduate who dropped out of college after her first semester, who now works at the same department store as her mom does. Larissa works at the cosmetics department in the store. Larissa also has an infant daughter, Hailey from a previous relationship that went down the drain. Hailey's father wants nothing to do with her or Larissa, which is fine with Larissa. To add to the amount of people living under the same roof, Scott's nephew, James (Rider Strong) has recently moved in after a blowout with his parents (who kicked him out). Karen's best friend, Vanessa Shillcox (Holly Robinson-Peete) who just so happens to be her co-manager at the department store. Like her mom, Larissa also works side-by-side with her best friend, Julie McPherson (Sara Gilbert).

Ep1: Pilot Episode:
Scott and Karen celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary kid-free. Larissa battles having to work overtime unexpectantly and canceling her first date since Hailey's birth.
Ep2: Brotherly Love?:
Kevin and Jake both get a crush on Erica's friend's little sister, Amanda. Amanda toys with both brothers' hearts. Erica learns Amanda is just toying around with Kevin and Jake, and doesn't like neither of them. Erica stands up for her brothers, resulting in Amanda's sister ending their friendship with her due to Erica's harsh words to Amanda. Karen fears Larissa will neglect Hailey if she begins to start dating again.
Ep3: Uncle and Nephew's Bonding Time:
Scott and James bond by going to the bars together to talk man-to-man about the "real" reason why James' dad/Scott's brother (Ted McGinley) kicked him out. James confesses the true reason to Scott, which is his dad kicked him out, due to the fact that James's former girlfriend (Rachel Blanchard) told him that she was carrying his baby, his dad flipped and kicked him out. James learns his girlfriend wasn't carrying his actual baby, but wasn't sure who was the father. James tried and tried to explain the truth to his dad who believed James was lying.
(Scott and James were the only main characters shown in this episode. It was mostly a flashback.)
Ep4: What's In-Store For You:
The department store gets held up by two masked gunmen. Karen, Vanessa, Larissa, and Julie are held hostage until the police arrive. The four women are all worked up, and resulting in Karen and Larissa imagining how their family would be if they were killed by the robbers. Meanwhile, Erica gets stood up by her date. Scott attempts to cheer up a heart-broken Erica.
Ep5: Enough Is Enough:
Scott and Karen, among the rest of the family, are sick and tired of Kevin and Jake's constant fighting. Scott thinks the boys need some "tough love" advice, as Karen thinks the opposite and thinks the boys just need a little less harsh talking to. Meanwhile, James receives a call from his dad, wanting to reconcile. James decides to erase the message before anyone else can hear it, and goes back to living his life with his uncle and his family. Yet, Erica has overheard James listening to his dad's message on the answering machine.
Ep6: Bad Parenting: Part One
Scott, James, Kevin, and Jake go out on a camping trip for the weekend, and Erica is spending the weekend at a friend's house. Leaving Karen, Larissa, and Hailey having the whole house to themselves. Karen makes a comment about how Larissa is putting herself and her needs before putting Hailey and her needs. Larissa thinks Karen is impling that she is a bad mom. Larissa takes it personal and comments on how she getting pregnant so young was due to Karen's bad parenting. Karen is hurt and insulted. Out of anger, Karen makes a remark on how she wished she had kicked Larissa out of her house.
Ep7: You Got Your Wish: Part Two
In the middle of the night, Larissa is still hung up on Karen's comment, and decides to take herself and Hailey, and move out. Larissa and Hailey knock on Julie's door at 3 AM, wanting a place to stay. A half-asleep Julie lets them in. The next morning, Julie learns about Karen and Larissa's big fight. Karen awakes to a completely empty house, and freaks out like crazy. Karen calls Vanessa and Erica over, to help her find Larissa and Hailey. They find them at Julie's apartment. Karen and Larissa talk out their problems, as Julie, Vanessa, and Erica (w/ Hailey) give them some alone time (Larissa and Hailey move back in with Karen and the family).
Ep8: The Tutor:
Erica's new Geometry tutor, Jenny (Lindsay Lohan) becomes the object of Kevin's and Jake's eyes. Yet Jenny has her eyes on another Sheridan man-James. Julie and Larissa hangout with Hailey at Julie's apartment, as Karen goes with Vanessa to attend a scrapbooking weekend seminiar in Connecticut.

Erica gives Kevin a hard time for not calling back a girl after promising he would. Erica learns his friends made fun of him for going out with the girl. Erica is disappointed that he would ditch the girl to be accepted by his loser friends. Meanwhile, Julie and James meet for the first time at Larissa's 19th Birthday party.
Ep10: Bad Influences:
Larissa pays a friend of a friend to get her a fake ID saying she was 21 years old. Larissa, with her fake ID, goes out to the bars with Julie and James. Julie finds James attractive, and confides in Larissa. James also finds Julie attractive, and confides in Larissa. Yet, Larissa becomes too drunk to remember anything, except coming home to the wrath of Scott and Karen.
Ep11: Driver's Licenses:
Kevin gets his driver's license. Kevin wants to borrow a vehicle to use for the weekend. After everyone else makes up excuses for not letting him use their vehicles, Scott lets Kevin borrow his truck, yet soon regrets it. Kevin rear-ends a parked car with his dad's prized truck. Kevin lies and says he was hit. No one believes him and Scott (and Karen) are furious with Kevin for hitting a car and lying about it.
Ep12: Platonic Friendship?:
Erica and her boy friend (not boyfriend) Tyler (Martin Spanjers) are getting too close for comfort for Scott. Yet Erica, Karen, Larissa, Julie, and Vanessa feel there is nothing wrong with Erica's friendship with Tyler. Tyler asks Erica to homecoming dance, Erica says yes. Everyone is happy, except Scott (who does not want his little girl getting hurt) and Kevin (who doesn't want Erica dating one of his friends). Hailey comes down with the flu, a hair-raised Larissa turns to Karen and Vanessa for motherly and helpful advice.
Ep13: Double Dating Dilemma:
Scott and Karen go on a double date to dinner with Vanessa and her new boyfriend, Curt (Martin Lawrence). Curt turns out to be self-indulged, self-obsessed, and selfish. Vanessa still feels Curt does no wrong and sincerely likes him. Scott and Karen convince her to dump him, after he comments about another woman in front of the three of them. Vanessa does just that and dumps him.
