Wow...I never thought my junior year would go by this fast! Anyway, my Junior Prom for my high school is coming up next month and I'm really excited, but now I don't know why because I might not go. I've always wanted to go to my prom. The idea of dressing up and dancing and dinner with a guy and a bunch of my closest pals has always appealed to me. I've been looking forward to this for a really really long time.

But unfortunately, my family is in this financial sitch right now and prom is so expensive. I've been trying for part-time jobs for a while now, but no one seems to want to hire me. I mean, the dress I want to wear costs almost $200 alone! But it's not the money that's holding me back, it's not having a date. My friend wanted to hook me up with her cousin, but she hasn't followed up. There's also this one guy I've liked for a while and I've been wanting to ask him out to prom for a long time now, but I think he's going with someone else, so I obviously can't talk him out of it. I'm not down to go with friends and have no date because everyone else will have a date.

Should I still go to my prom? There's always Senior Ball next year and I could even go to senior prom this year if I can bug one of the upperclass guys to take me, but I still really want to go. Like I said, I've been looking forward to this for quite a while now and since my junior year so far is all crap, maybe this will bring me up a bit.

Anyone have any advice for me or stories they want to share about high school prom?

It's really sick that prom is so expensive. It's just a dance; a social event. A $300 dress you wear once isn't going to make the night better.

If you decide you want to go, be sure and shop around for good deals in dresses. Even a cheap dress can be nice. Maybe a used clothing place. Sometimes those places have real designer stuff. No one has to know the dress is "used."

I went to my senior prom with a group of friends and the whole thing sucked so much! The music was bad, the people were jerks, they ran out of refreshments...awful experience.

In Australia,we call it a "Year 12 Formal" and i didn't enjoy mine either.I hated alot of the people i went to school with and it was sickening to spend a night with them, and pretend to 'like them'.I didn't even wanna go,but i had just as much right to be there as anyone else did.

Even if you dont have a date,go along.Dont let that stop you.Not Having a date isn't exactly the end of the world,so dont worry.

I only went my senior year. My dress costed 130 dollars, I got it from Riches. And my shoes costed like 30 dollars, and how long did I wear them? As soon as we sat down at our table in the dance hall, they were gone! I didn't have much accesories, only a pair of earrings and a necklace, both from Claires so they didn't cost much. I had a lot of fun... it is ridiculous though that I paid 130 dollars for a dress I only wore once!

If you go to D.E.B, they have some really cute dresses that are totally affordable :D I'm pretty sure that's a national chain.

For the Military Ball last year, I got my dress at Jessica McClintock... it was $225! I had to pay half of it. I usually don't like expensive things, but that was like, my dream dress.

Anyway, I'm a sophmore, but my boyfriend's a junior, and we're still deciding about Prom. We might skip it and go to his senior next year. Junior in my school is overrated.

Good luck dress shopping!

I agree with you about the price. That's why I didn't go, and my friends and I only went to the after prom party. It sucked, and I also heard that the Prom itself, sucked.

My school must have been weird...the juniors and seniors had prom together instead of separate.

No, your school's not weird. In fact, I think more schools have a traditional combined junior/senior prom. But I personally prefer having separate proms for different classes.

That's where I got my dress :) It was only $40.

I don't have a date (pssh, didn't expect to get one anyway), but my friends and some of their friends are going, and we're taking a limo and stuff, so it should be fun. The whole thing (dress, limo, and ticket) costs $150. I think my parents are paying for it all though  I hope.

I agree with what Karly said...I see dresses in DEB all of the time and I'm pretty sure they're not rediculously expensive. Try there, they have nice ones :) As for a date? Bah, **** it. I honestly don't know...I've never even been to a prom. I honestly would if this one kid...eh, **** that too. **** proms, don't go.

I don't do dances. Our prom is going to be so cool this year though. It's at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, which has fishies and stuff and it's going to be GORGEOUS. But I have no one to go with, no money, and I hate dances.
