Beyonce actually did a good job, I thought too! But her eye shadow.... eww.

I'm really happy that Morgan Freeman finally won. He's such a great actor and he deserved it.

And, what's up with Scarlett Johansson's hair?! She always wears such pretty dresses (which she is tonight, too) and has gorgeous hair, but tonight it looks like her hair has horrible split ends!

Good show. I was rooting for Martin Scorsese and The Aviator, but I loved Million Dollar Baby too. I was happy that Hilary Swank and Jamie Foxx won.

Chris Rock was okay. I could have done without the political bashing in his opening monolog. I also think it was in poor taste to knock other actors. Sean Penn called him out on it about Jude Law.

Overall I liked the Oscar presentation this year. I felt Beyonce sang too many songs though. They should've come up with 2 other singers (JMHO). Charlize theron looked dazzling. Hillary Swank looked pretty with her beautiful gown too.

Sorry you feel that way Janice. I loved Chris Rock and I'm glad they selected him as host this year
I've always been a fan of Chris Rock, and I was happy when he was chosen as host and posted so on the movie board. I just didn't like his remarks over the last few weeks. "The Oscars are F'in idiotic. Only men gay watch the show. I've never watched the show before." There's more, but that's all that comes to mind.

I didn't care for his rant on some actors. I think it was mean spirited.
"Clint Eastwood's a star, OK? Tobey Maguire's just a boy in tights". "You want Tom Cruise and all you can get is Jude Law? Wait. You want Russell Crowe and all you can get is Colin Farrell? Wait. 'Alexander' is not 'Gladiator.'"

Why pick on those actors? They weren't even nominated. Just pull their names out of thin air and bash their acting abilities, at the Oscars, no less.

I also think there's a time and a place for politics. We have to listen to politics constantly, and on Oscar night, I want to be entertained and forget about politics. It's supposed to be a neutral night. I don't want to hear a rant against the President, whether it's a Democrat or a Republican. I think his joke about John Kerry being a gigolo was equally offensive. Why pick on him?

In effect, Chris Rock insulted the audience and the show beforehand and actors and politicians during the show. His humor is always at someone else's expense, much like Don Rickle's. It came off as more of a roast to me.

My take on Rock's humor is this: If people take themselves so seriously that they can't even laugh at themselves from time to time, then there's something wrong. You should be able to laugh at yourself every now and then - it's not like he singled one person out, he joked about all kinds of people. I'll be surprised if he's asked back to host again because Letterman cracked on people in the audience and he wasn't asked back. I think I'm the only person who thought Letterman did a good job hosting. It was like having a 4 hour edition of the Late Show  And I agree with the poster who said that the Academy knew full well what kind of comic Chris Rock is and how he jokes about other celebrities - if they didn't like his brand of humor then they shouldn't have asked him to host

it's not like he singled one person out, he joked about all kinds of people.
No, he singled out several people. He's an equal opportunity offender. He ragged on Cuba Gooding Jr, saying that he's making lousy movies and he wants to send him 80 bucks, implying that his career has hit the skids.
He joked how the losers put on happy faces, and when on to make fun of Nicole Kidman's expression when she lost last year.
He singled out Jude Law, Toby Maguire and Colin Farrell, basically calling them acting lightweights.
He hit people below the belt and insulted their acting skills, by name. Actors take a lot of pride in their craft. That's the issue I have with him.
They showed a clip of Johnny Carson hosting...when he quipped, "There's a lot of new faces on older faces tonight." Now that's funny. He didn't single anyone out. It was sarcasm directed in a general way. Carson had class.

No, you're not the only one. I liked both Letterman and Chris Rock as hosts. With Chris last night, he also made fun of himself, with the Pootie Tang bit and "if you want Denzel but can only get me, wait!!" Anyone who may have been offended should have taken the cue from Chris that it's okay to laugh at yourself. Anyone who's looking toward Chris Rock to be a serious critic of acting only have themselves to blame if they're that sensitive that it bothers them that much. He wasn't bashing anyone's acting abilities, he was making jokes, that's what he's there to do.

I personally did not find the comments Rock made about other actors offensive. Rock does that all the time when he hosts the Video Music Awards when calling out singers. If you noticed, Rock did make fun of himself as well, saying "if you want Eddie Murphy for a movie, wait for Eddie Murphy, don't settle for me" (or was it Denzel Washington?)

I highly doubt knowing Jude Law's sense of humor that even he wasn't as offended by Rock's comments as Sean Penn was. Sean was a little too self-righteous over it and I'm sure if Jude was in the audience, he would've been laughing. About the only reason to watch the VMA's the years he hosts is just for his opening monologue where he bashes the hot artists of the moment (i.e. American Idol "Paula Abdul judging a singing contest? that's like a blind person judging art"), he's always funny, and I don't think he is that offended, everything he said is to be taken with a grain of salt.

Chris Rock was a pathetic host. The Oscar's are supposed to be about class and distinction as the top awards in the entertainment field. Billy Crystal, Bob Hope and Johnny Carson illustrated this class in their abilities as hosts. When I watched the Oscars last night and saw Miss Piggy and Johnny Carson talking, it was quality humor... not rude, not offensive, nothing but fun.

However, Chris Rock's comments about other actors showed his lack of respect for their work. I don't like Sean Penn's attitude in a lot of ways, but I compliment him for standing up to Chris Rock. I hope he beat the crap out of CR in the parking lot.

how familiar are you with Chris Rock's hosting skills? I love movies, but I hate Hollywood. (If that makes any sense) I hate when actors go up to the podium and preach to the world their beliefs. I remember a year or so ago when the movie Frida won an award and the writer or director came up and said if Frida were alive, she would oppose the war and Salma Hayek and a bunch of actors stood and applauded. How the **** would you know?!? I kind of like it when these higher than thou actors are put in their place. They are actors, not doctors curing cancer. There was alot of Rock's performance that I didn't like, but the Acedemy got what they paid for. They got Chris Rock. I really wish Rock chose Ben Affleck more than Jude Law, but so be it. Sean Penn in my opinion is one of those people who takes himself a little too seriously. There is no doubt in my mind that Johnny Carson was the cream of the crop. He was the epitomy of class. However, that is not what the Academy was shooting for this year. They wanted to be hip and young and quite frankly got what they deserved. I agree with you Janice, the Bush bashing was out of line. These are movies not politics. I don't like it when the actors do it and the same applies to the hosts.

Congrats to Jamie Foxx, Hilary Swank and Clint Eastwood. :woohoo: I also thought that Cate Blanchett did a good job in the Aviatar and I'm glad she got Best Supporting Actress. And Chris Rock was better than I expected, not as good as Whoopi or Billy though.

am I the only person surprised by how fast the Academy has "forgiven" Jamie Foxx for movies like Booty Call? These are the same people who still won't recognize Jim Carrey (even tho I felt that Truman Show, Man On The Moon and Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind were all Oscar-worthy performances yet he never got nominated, despite winning the Golden Globe for the first two) because they hold Ace Ventura and Dumb And Dumber against him.
