In the earliest episodes, a swinging door in the front entry opens into what appears to be another hallway that connects to the kitchen. In the 2nd season's Linda Dennison episode I noticed that the swinging door opened directly into the kitchen. Did I miss an episode? Was there an episode in which Ward and the boys did some home improvement and take out a wall in the kitchen?

i think it always connected directly to the kitchen. i don't remember a hallway. maybe you're thinking of the second house. there was a door in the front hall leading to a hallway which lead to the kitchen.

Well, technically, yes - the swinging door always connected to the kitchen but in the earliest episodes the swinging door in the front entry of the Maple Drive house opened into a hallway - or more accurately, a blank wall. One apparently turned to the left to enter the kitchen.
In some of the earliest episodes a swinging door connected the dining room to the kitchen and there was a similar set up: the swinging door in the dining room opened onto a blank wall and one turned to the left to enter the kitchen.
