In the episode "You've Been Disconnected," Gilligan uses the telephone and gets an operator in San Diego (played by Sandra Gould, the second Mrs. Kravitz on Bewitched). :)

She answers her switchboard by saying "This is the operater. Please deposit 10 cents, sir." Since Gilligan hasn't said anything yet, how does she know it's a man calling???

Maybe she should have had her own show....."Psychic Operator"

Also, I don't think it was fair for all the others to be mad at Gilligan for covering the exposed wires with rubber when the storm hit. Sure, he's done a lot of stupid, bone-headed things in the past, but none of them knew the cable would be dragged back out to sea---and, if it hadn't, the exposed wiring would have NEEDED protection. Gilligan didn't make a stupid decision; he made a logical one that turned out wrong through chance. ;)

Well, most likely the operator just said it from force of habit. If it was a woman all she would have to say is, "Oh, I'm sorry, madam, please deposit 10 cents."

And the Professer told Gilligan that if the exposed wires were out in the sea, they would have eventually corroded and broke. Because if they broke, they would have sent out a telephone repair boat to fix the break. And they would have been rescued. So he did do a stupid thing by covering them up.

The Professor said that whole bit about the wires corroding AFTER the cable was gone and , as I plainly said in my original post, none of them thought that the cable would be swept back out to sea. If it hadn't been they would have complimented Gilligan on protecting the wires they were tapping into.

As for the operator saying "sir" out of force of habit-- that would only be a good explanation if men made phone calls much more often than women. The obvious explanation is that they did many takes and the way it was edited together led to the blooper. Anyway, it's fun to catch little inconsistencies like that

If I saw this giant storm heading for the island, I would immediatley notice that the cord was on the shore and that their is a very strong chance that it would get washed out into the sea. It would be a win-win situation. If the wire stayed on land, they could have made more phone calls. If it got swepped into the water, the open wires would have corroded and broke. And everybody who took 5th grade sciene would know that when you expose copper to the saltwater the copper will deteriorate and break. And if there is a break, the phone company would have to send out a repair boat, they wouldn't just let it rot their in the ocean.

And the thing with the phone operator. Like I said, "force of habit."

If there was no Gilligan they would have been rescued by the fourth episode.
